Lookin' at this interview you would never expect the lazily postured man on the couch to be capable of crafting thought provoking, intellectually stimulating, philosophical lyrics delivered through polysyllabic rhyme patterns.
Thinking about it when it really comes down to deciding who really is my favourite rapper of all time i often get to the conclusion that it actually is nas.
I don't have one favorite anything. Someone asked me my favorite color and I couldn't choose just one. They asked me my favorite cereal and I gave 4 or 5 answers. They asked me my favorite tv show and it was Married with Children, The Simpson's, Good Times and the Jeffersons. They asked me my favorite R and B singer and I named like 30 people. The person said "damn. You never have just one favorite". Then they asked me my favorite rapper. Nas. I didn't even have to think hard about it.
It's nice to see Nas out there doing interviews n stuff. It's also nice to see some old footage release. I was born in 83. I've Ben listening to him since 91-92, right before Illmatic dropped. My favorite artist of all time....
He's right any MC who gives a shit about being on rapgenius or something like it, that MC gives a shit about the lyrics, and that's improvement to hip hop.
I know its a matter of opinion but I believe that rap is the original form of music. If Shakespeare was alive he most likely would be a rap artist .Rap can be very articulate and enlightening as any genre maybe even more because you can express yourself in so many ways. Its an art form that encompasses all other art forms that came before it. Rap is poetry, it's social commentary, it has tragedy, comedy etc. Anyways that's my two cents peace.
"Sleep is the cousin of death" is Greek. From Hesoids Theogony... for anyone that's curious to know the furthest origins known. About 3k years ago if I'm not mistaken. Edit: may have been from Work and Days. Been a minute since I've read them.
The Greeks learned everything from Kemet, which they called Egypt, which is in Africa and was not traditionally an Islamic country,. It was a culture of Africans, so Nas is right. That saying is African. Go study some more. Educate yourself.
Thanks my dude....For Real! Man I've been wanting to know the story behind the very lyrics you asked him about! Great Interview...wish it was longer though...
I wish Rap Genius could ask Ghostface Killah about what his songs mean. "One" is a great example. So is "Bells Of War." His raps are cool but make no sense.
+bob bobby Ok Then If His Rhymes Make No Sense Then You Should Check His Discography And Listen He's Blast Was Past Any Member Of Wu-Tang 13 Records Over A 20 Year Span
Ghostface does make sense but he admitted on some songs especially on Supreme Clientele, he was more focused on flow than substance so a lot of the time he just rapped whatever sounded good rather than whatever makes sense or stays on subject. So yes a lot of his verses are nonsense but that's the minority and he's one of the best lyricists out there when he wants to be
One Has To Ask Nas The Right Questions, The Right Way, To Receive A Real Answer. I Heard Nas Tell Someone Who Asked The Question Correctly And Respectfully, By Referencing One Of Nas' Lines-- "My Next Two Albums Instead Of Projects,/ There'll Be A Deeper Difficult Test For The Minds Optics/"- Nas Nas Response Was To The Effect That When Noah Emerged From The Arc, He Sent A Dove 🕊 To Retrieve A Fig So He Would Know Dry Land Was Near. Nas Continued Saying That In The Projects, We Don't Have Doves, We Have Pigeons... Doves Are Just Albino Pigeons... So I (Nas) Sent Out A Pigeon From The Arc, And What It Brought Back Was Stillmatic...
what did he say this on, do you know? thats dope as hell i believe you are being real tho cuz his answer to never sleep cuz sleep is the cause of the death was dry, discreet, and cryptic even. Almost like he didnt trust or like the interviewer and question enough to speak his mind and his peace
Matthew 12:36-37 "I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned."
I'll tell you who needs this lyrical breakdown the MOST!!!!: CAMP LO and LUPE FIASCO (Most notably for TETSUO AND YOUTH) THIS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!! I've broken down 6% of their lyrics after listening to them 20k times!
