NASA Announced New Starship Flight 5 Launch Date! FAA Big Problem...
Feeling confused? You’re not alone! NASA has just released new estimates for the Starship Flight 5 launch date, but there's a lot to break down. On top of that, the eagerly awaited Polaris Dawn mission is facing yet another delay, this time due to weather conditions and new FAA requirements. And in a surprising twist, NASA has awarded a fresh contract for the lunar mission to Intuitive Machines.
These developments are shaking up the space industry, and we're here to unpack it all on today’s episode of Great SpaceX.
NASA Announced New Starship Flight 5 Launch Date! FAA Big Problem...
We’re inching closer to Elon Musk’s anticipated launch estimates, but where’s the progress? SpaceX seems to be stalled, and the FAA isn't exactly speeding things up. Although there’s no mishap investigation underway, the FAA recently announced that they’re only now beginning to evaluate SpaceX’s proposed license modifications. This leaves the launch schedule hanging in the balance.
NASA Announced New Starship Flight 5 Launch Date! FAA Big Problem...
Interestingly, NASA officials provided an update on the Starship launch date during a meeting of the NASA Advisory Council. Cathy Koerner, a NASA official, shared that the Starship test flight 5 is expected "later this fall." With fall starting around September 22, it looks like we won’t see a launch until at least then, if not later. So, we’re in for at least another three weeks of waiting, possibly more.
This new timeline, although disappointing, aligns with the current pace of both SpaceX and the FAA. Since the last tests, like the Spin Prime of S30 on August 7 and the static fire of B12 on July 15, there hasn’t been much movement. It’s possible that SpaceX is focusing on upgrading systems at Chopstick for the capture mission, but the real bottleneck seems to be the FAA. Their delay in evaluating SpaceX’s proposal is puzzling, especially since no mishap investigation is required. This makes it difficult to predict when the FAA will complete their evaluation.

And yes the USA does treat "it's secrets" with deadly force and/or incarceration. Having said this, Elons plan for landing flight 5 on the tower appears to be a fundamentally flawed one with almost no upside and all risk. If it isn’t successful, he sets his plan back soooo much. If he takes one more launch to land in the ocean and making it go perfectly, he could likely success the launch after, decrease risk, and not let the FAA stand in its way. It makes no sense that a genius would want to land this way in flight 5 with flight 4 having landing of the heavy booster not going perfectly from the rumors online. If those rumors are wrong any everything went right, then I get it and I take everything back.

Honestly I believe a conversation has taken place. SpaceX is working on these upgrades, per that conversation. And when both spaceX and the FAA are smoozed, we will fly, and land.

The CNBC allegations of SpaceX violating the clean water act is probably hold up. Where the mercury and other chemicals came from is the question. Is it from the Helium and oxygen combining with the water. If this is true the water from the deluge system would need to be placed in a holding pond till it could be purified. All the new rockets with a water deluhge system would have a similar problem.

Didnt SpaceX have to do testing in their area before they starting luanching rockets? That would show existing contaminant.

If I had to guess a lot of the feet dragging going on is because of the primaries coming up ( they can deny it all they want but it becomes obvious every election year when suddenly government agencies all across the board seem to develope delays ). While I understand that serious allegations need to be investigated I have to wonder about CNBC's report...I mean SpaceX is always under a lot of scrutiny and they know it. Also any environmental violations are guaranteed to bring things to a halt, which they definitely don't want. So I highly doubt there's anything of the sort going on, if only to avoid the risk of further delays.
