I’m going through this now. I’ve been addicted to decongestant spray for over 2 yeas back when I had a sinus infection and it was the only thing that could help me breathe. Well 2+ years down the line and I’m still addicted. I decided to wean myself off it, I can’t do cold turkey cuz it’s too hard so I’m doing one nostril at a time and it’s working already. It’s only been 24 hrs and I already see a difference. I’m praying that this addiction does away for good!!

I get this almost throughout the whole winter. In the summer and autumn it's fine. I think that warm (not dry) air and getting seawater in your nose helps. You can also do this at home using neti-pots but you NEED to boil the water first, wait for it to cool off, add some salt or baking soda and flush away. Sometimes it helps a little and sometimes it doesn't. It's best doing this when it's warm outside since having damp nasal canals and cold weather don't go well together.
@ArsalanAspires

I used it for about three months on and off. I didn't know it was harmful. The warning only says to use it for three days, but they don't specify the reason why. So, now I am using Xlear Natural Saline and Sinus Orega Nasal Mist. I have a steam sauna I try to use every night, and I boil water while in the kitchen. Additionally, I have a humidifier with an air purifier. I started about seven days ago. When I am out and about, it doesn't bother me too much. I can breathe at night just fine. It was tough when I started last Saturday, but as the days go by, it is slowly getting better-some days are much better than others. One more thing: with Xclear, I started spraying every hour because it wasn't working for me to just do it twice a day, and now with the Sinus Orega, I do one every half hour. I am also following an anti-candida diet. When this problem started, I had no idea why I had sinus problems, and it took months until I found out about the drugstore nasal spray (from which I am detoxing). I am taking a lot of vitamin C, quercetin, anti-candida supplements, vitamin D, Pau D'arco, and hibiscus tea. I also drink a combination of ginger tea and lots of water.

If you can't get Rhinostat where you live (I can't) you can make your own. Simply buy a 30ml Empty refillable nasal spray bottle, 2 or 3 bottles of the spray you are "addicted" to (enough to fill the 30ml bottle), and a bottle of saline solution. Decant your sprays into the refillable bottle and mark a line on the bottle of how much is in it, then use the spay as normal BUT once a day at a set time top up the spray to the line with the saline solution and continue to use it. I also found that using a Vapour Rub at the same time eased the process. This has worked for me twice now. Another option that I have never tried but heard others recommend is to only spray up one nostril until the other clears naturally then stop and let the other clear.

I’ve been using the store brand oxymetazoline for 3 months on and off. I started noticing I was smelling smoke every night. No one was smoking and no one outside our house. So I researched and found that nasal sprays can completely ruin your sense of smell and make you smell these “phantom odors” The smoke smell was the result of the spray. I would spray 2times each nostril twice a day. I stopped using the spray last night ,,it’s been about 24 hrs since I stopped. Today has been hell I have used Flonase twice today, it maybe helps you with like 5% opening. I took 3 ibuprofen to see if it helps with inflammation. I can breathe maybe 1/3 from right nostril and maybe 5% with left. I hope I can breathe better tomorrow!

As the video says, the primary symptom of rebound congestion is swollen blood vessels in the nose. To reduce that swelling, you need to do things with your body that cause it to constrict those blood vessels naturally. And that often comes with vigorous exercise. Break a sweat. Get the adrenaline going. Your body has figured out over thousands of years of evolution that when you're vigorously on the move, you need air ... lots of it. When I was younger, I used to play ice hockey. If I started the game with a stuffy nose, by the end of the first couple of shifts there was no more stuffy nose.

Try gradually stopping baby spray and salt spray. Spray salt spray in both nostrils and baby spray in both nostrils, and set a sleep alarm that wakes you up every two hours to ensure breathing. Intermittent sleep is preferred, dividing sleep periods, and take probiotics important
@JamesMorford
@JamesMorford 9 месяцев назад
The tip about exercise is a good one. Besides using ice/heat masks to sooth the symptoms of rebound, exercise is the most effective natural rebound treatment. Using stairs is the most effective exercise for me. My theory is that the exercise activity redirects blood to your muscles and away from your swollen nasal passages, there's only so much blood in your body, it's gotta come from somewhere, right? I tried lifting weights and it helped a little, but it was not as effective as simply climbing the stairs. In the end, if you can avoid ever using decongestant srpays, I would - I plan to never go back once I finally get past this rebound nightmare. The risks the use of decongestant sprays present is far too great, I think they should ban the products.

I’ve been using it for 3 years this time. it starts out with a bad cold when your nose is blocked and you can't breath, you suffocate especially during the night, the more I used it the worse things got, the effect lasted only a few minutes then it was worse then before. I sprayed 3 or 4 times each nostril to be able to breath maybe 15 minutes, this went on for years, the lining of my nose would burn, and it was bleeding. I got off of it using steroid spray, not addictive, and doesn't ruin your nose, it doesn't work like a bomb right away but it works, I also used those breath right strips, especially during the night, if I didn't have to go out I wore them during the day too. I finally got rid of those sprays that were killing me. It took me about a week, I don't think cold turkey is the way to go, too much suffering, you just suffocate and get panic attacks

I had the same problems. I went about 20 years day and night spraying Sinex or Logicin (Oxymetazoline Hydrochloride) up my nose. I'd wake up at night feeling like I'm suffocating. I'd stop breathing and my girlfriend would have to give me a poke to wake up and breathe. Constant nose bleeds and piles of bloodied tissues next to the bed. I couldn't go anywhere without a box of tissues close by. Most of the time it felt like a burning sensation but sometimes I had that horrible crawling sensation where it felt like I had bugs or worms in my sinus. I reckon one of the worst things about this condition apart from the panic attacks is that to other people it's invisible. They have no idea what you're going through, it was so frustrating. It got to the point where I started to have suicidal thoughts. I'm breathing a lot clearer these days. I ended up getting a solution a couple years ago thanks to a very good ENT who helped me. All of my sinus, airway and hypersensitive allergy issues were corrected with septoplasty and turbinate reduction surgery. So I'm not suffering anymore and I'm glad you're not either. I wouldn't wish this condition on anyone, it's hell.

I have to use this methot after every flue. When the flue is gone, just spray your left side until the right side fully cured. Then stop completely. For me it takes about a day or so. As soon as you leave it be it gradually heals pretty fast.

@@ArsalanAspires Hi Dr... I have stopped taking Octrivine after 7 days use as I started experiencing the rebound congestion symptoms. Since 2005 to current I have had 3 surgical procedures to remove nasal polyps. To prevent any potential return of the polyps, my dr has prescribed me with Nasonex (mometasone furoate) which I take daily. Is this ok to to use whilst I’m experiencing rebound congestion? I had a cold about 4 or 5 months ago and I used nose spray and ended up using it about multiple times a day for 4 or 5 months. Usually when I have to ween myself off nose spray, I have to go maybe a couple weeks without it and it clears up on its own. That’s usually about all I do. But it’s so torturous. Nose spray works but it makes my nose so stuffy when not using it. And during those couple weeks my nose is so stuffy I have to breath with my mouth open and it is hard to eat or drink or talk because it requires me to close my mouth. Lol

I have the same problem right now. I wasn’t fully aware that afrin caused rebound congestion until about a week ago. I tried to ween off and that was just not for me. I work a lot and wear a mask all day which made It worse. I tried to get the original afrin instead of extra strength to help ween me off but I’m still dependent on that one too. Today is the first day i haven’t used It and i feel like I’m in hell. I looked up online and It stated in some cases you feel relief within a week and others within months. Idk how long I’ll be able to last. I had Flonase, a Vicks humidifier, even tried turning on my shower and letting the steam fill my bathroom. I hope this gets better soon.. because this is by far the most uncomfortable thing I’ve had to deal with. Since i haven’t used It all day today. I’ve had a runny nose and been stuffed completely to the point where it’s hard to sleep, eat, and i sound horrible when i speak. I’m praying this goes away soon and i can last without afrin. But now I’m completely off afrin and never used It again. The first couple of days i had really bad congestion, and i realized now that It took a long time for my nasal passages to heal meaning i would get dry nose, bleed often and constantly feel uncomfortable. But anyone who is struggling with It i recommend letting go as soon as you can. Use Vicks, a humidifier and even just a hot shower. Let It pass and believe me once It is over you’re going to feel the best relief.

I've been using Nasal spray for close 2 weeks, the box said I could use it for up to 7 days but I felt such bad rebound congestion. I don't how to stop because I can't breathe without it, I can't concentrate on my exams and I can't sleep without it. I'm so worried. Edit: I decided to try ween myself off by using it only one nostril. My left nostril hurts so bad but I hope that it will clear up soon enough so I can stop using it on my other nostril Another Edit: I quit in June. Its October now and I'm doing great. Here's what I did, I'd been using nasal spray from early April until early June. So, that's roughly two months. Which may be why I Don't have extensive damage jn my case, I got off it once the school summer holidays started so hopefully you can get some time off work or school. At first, in may I started to only use it on one nostril. I hoped that I would be able to go off it slowly but every time I stopped using the nasal spray in my other nostril, both of them became blocked. This is still a vital step though, because whilst both nostrils were block, the one I quit earlier did not have swollen sinuses. It feels like your head is about to explode from the pressure due to both being completely blocked on the inside by swollen sinuses. When I quit, I used saline solution like steminar (salt solution basically) and fluctanose (I think that's the spelling. It's mostly for hayfever) to help me through the worst. Honestly, it took me months to get to breathing properly but the worst does pass. Now it's October, my nose runs more than it should I sneeze a lot but I can breathe quite well. Hopefully it will continue getting better as time goes on. The hardest part if sticking to it, but I promise you it is worth getting off Nasal spray. After 2 months for me, that stuff actually hurt to use. It's embarrassing, to be addicted to something like this. But it will get better and you'll be grateful you stopped now. Finally, I am not a doctor nor a medical professional. Please get genuine medical assistance, my doctors were horrible and my mum plain old didn't think you could get addicted to smth like this. But especially if you have been using for a while, it's so worth at least talking to a doctor to see what they can advise

For me the only real way to kick rebound congestion is slowly use less and less Oxymetazoline Hydrochloride over several days or even weeks. I had rebound congestion by using afrin longer than suggested, I couldn't breathe at all and even felt like a was panicking on certain nights when I couldn't sleep for days. I used afrin the first night as much as I needed, and each day filled the empty portion of the bottle with distilled water. Each day I used the bottle of afrin, continued to add more distilled water until about 7 days later I was just squirting distilled water up my nose. On the 10th day I simply stopped, used a saline sinus rinse and added a couple drops of iodine and pinch of xylitol to the saline rinse. After about 15 days my rebound congestion was completely gone. This may not work for everyone, but I found by gradually using less sinus spray each day I was able to get rid of the rebound congestion. If you can cut cold turkey, great, but I tried that and at first I felt that just made my situation worse. Doing it gradually really worked. My Dr suggested to use the saline rinse a few times a week, and if still congested use essential oils like eucalyptus and/or peppermint oil. Also, I'd be weary of steroid sprays like Flonase. It helps a little at first, but then prolonged my rebound symptoms.

Do one nasal cavity at a time. So spray one cavity, leave the other. The untreated side will be stuffy for a few days but you’ll be able to breathe through the one you’re spraying. Do that for as long as it takes, once that side clears up, leave the other side and you’ll be fine. Within a few days the one will clear up, then go on to the next. I had this problem for at least 15 years. Saturating my sinus with oxymetazoline sprays everyday just so I could keep going for work etc. It was exhausting. I would sometimes go through a 15ml bottle in less than a week. I don't like to call it an addiction though. Because it's not like you're getting a high from making it easier to breathe. Otherwise everyone's an oxygen junkie lol. Rather than calling it an addiction I regarded it as a severe dependency to allow for some improvement in breathing whilst doing arduous work. Otherwise how long could a person last with incredible sinus pressure and pain with no sleep and impaired respiration everyday? That's a heart attack just waiting to happen! If my sinus was jammed up with inflammation and blood (which was most of the time) I would have great difficulty trying to sleep because I hate mouth breathing and I was lucky to get maybe an hour or two of actual sleep. Having to mouth breathe most of the time was horrible. Every time I'd go into a chemist to get a nasal spray refill, staff would say "Now just be careful not to use it anymore than a few days" I'd reply with "Well I'm going on 15 years now, so the damage's been done." Anyway, I had surgery and that fixed up everything. But I get that while surgery worked for me, it may not be for everyone. People who are suffering from this horrible condition need to figure out the best option for them. My solution started with getting a referral to see a good ENT (ear nose and throat specialist).

Can steam be used?
@ArsalanAspires
@ArsalanAspires 4 года назад
Yes it can be used. The main benefit you get from breathing in moist, warm steam is that may help with the irritation and swollen blood vessels in the nasal passages. The moisture may also help thin the mucus in your sinuses, which allows them to empty more easily. Just make sure to avoid steam that is too hot to prevent burning. I hope this helps.

Hi Mi Sol. I have found a solution to your problem that takes only one night. Get a vaporiser that makes steam, not a cool mist. Steep a strong batch of Camamile tea. I put ten teabags in mine. Fill the vaporiser with the tea and place it beside your bed. It also helps to take pseudephedrine tablets. Get the real pseudephedrine that you can only get from a pharmacy, not the over the counter stuff. Go to sleep. When you wake up you will find you no longer need the spray.I put my vaporiser in a small tent and slept in it. I dont know why it works, but I have broken my addiction twice now with thus method. I truly hope you will try it as this is the only method I have found that works every time.

Thank you for your question and expressing your concern. I have struggled with rebound congestion myself so I can empathize with you. Have you tried Oral decongestants like pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine tablets? They can help decongest without the threat of rebound congestion. For me, my problems have been with allergies. If your problem is allergies, topical nasal steroids (Flonase and Nasacort) reduce allergic inflammation over a couple days, which provide relief. The prescription singulair has helped improve nasal congestion as well. I hope this provides you some alternative solutions as I know it can be very frustrating when you don’t know what to do next. Aspiring your best life.

What about one nostril at a time method??? I'm suprised more doctors are not recommending this. All you do is continue to use the nasal spray in one nostril and stop using the spray in the other nostril. You will be able the breath just fine and sleep while keeping one nostril open with the spray. During the few days of not spraying in the "cold turkey nostril" , it will gradually open back up. Once its finally weened off, just stop the nasal spray all together so the nostril you kept open for breathing and sleeping can cold turkey and heal. After another week or so, you'll be completely free! You can also use Flonase in the nostril thats bothering you until it clears up. So in the future, if you catch another cold, just treat ONE nostril since you will breath just fine till you get over the cold that stopped up your nose. The key is one nostril!
