Nasality vs Nasal Airflow (SINGING LESSON)

A lot of people are confused about what nasal airflow is and why it's important. Despite what a lot of people think, nasal airflow can actually help you stop sounding so nasal when you sing! Vocal coach Tristan Paredes breaks it down!

Growing up as I was singing, I was told that nasality was such a bad thing. I would try so hard not to do it. Later on I found that, of course, that isn’t true. I’m so glad that you posted this video since there might be others out there who feel the same way. Love love love your channel!

This is actually very helpful!! Thank you so much for explaining nasal airflow because I've been confused on it for several years and I've been stuck with a misconception that if you have air flowing out of your nose you sound nasally! Thank you for explaining how that's not always the case and that nasal airflow can actually help!

It took me way too long to learn the difference by myself 😂 I was often told in secondary school choir by my instructor that I was ' too nasally ' or ' too airy ' and I was singing with my throat, not my head voice; it took me so much experimenting back then (even till now) to understand how to place my voice properly

Same. I spent so long (years) singing with all of the sound in my mouth and sounded like spongebob. Had no idea how that could be happening since I was doing what all my teachers said- sing with the soft palate lifted so no sound escapes the nose. It's frustrating because the science is there- teachers are just behind on the information because scientists aren't in the business of bringing their knowledge to wider audiences

Makes sense as to why James Charles sounds flat and has that mouth-airflow only sound. Even when he speaks, he always sounds like he has a plugged nose to me. I don't think he naturally lets air out of his nose. I bet he could be a great singer when he learns this technique! Also I hope you make a vid with him!!

This is so good to know! I knew a woman when I was a child that had the most nasal voice ever, she sounded whiny and pretty terrible, so I taught myself to sing with my nose plugged so I wouldn't sound like her. 😂 I'm a soprano and sometimes come across as breathy, which isn't my intention. Thank you for explaining that if I allow air through my nose that I won't sound like I'm borderline crying. I know some gets through now but I'm going to allow more and see what kind of a difference that makes. I'm actually singing the National Anthem tonight for a minor league baseball team so you gave the perfect example!

@tristanparedes
@tristanparedes 6 лет назад
It's such a weird thing for classical singers to teach because it isn't even true, at least according the to research that has been done on the subject. Different vowels require different amounts of it- some have more some have less and some might not have any. But to say that it shouldn't be there are all is just not what the new studies show!

This is helpful. I grew up singing in choir and was self-taught. I naturally tended to sing in a very classical style, but in my upper register I could feel that my nasal passages were closed and it's always bothered me. My definition of "sounding nasal" was the sound when you pinch your nose and dont allow air through your nasal passageways, so it's bothered me how I can't seem to open it up in my upper register. Inhaling through my nose helps, but I didn't know of any other tricks. Thanks!

Hey Tristan! I just want to say thank you for your educational videos and most importantly, your authentic personality. Over this year I've been working on coming out of my shell in the online sense and I've really appreciated your candid personality on camera. I recently started this channel to share my experiences singing over the last several years and give amateur singers some feedback on their vocals. Your videos helped give me the push I needed to share the lessons I've learned along the way. My original idea for the channel was to make song parodies but I decided to change it up and focus on vocal improvement among other things as I feel that's what would best represent my experience. My first video (along this new direction) will be up soon and I'd just like to invite other members of the tristfam to subscribe and be a part of this journey. Thank you all!

not to be dramatic but I have PTSD from drama-infested musical theatre in high school and it literally turned me off from one of my favorite hobbies ever. Everyone in the department was a snake who judged others for their singing while never being open to criticism while also believing they were the hottest shit in the world if they got a solo in our small town theatre. They bullied me endlessly and I have literally been TRIGGERED by watching other people perform or sing because it just reminded me of these horrible people. I was actually scared to watch your videos when they started being recommended to me, but after I started watching them I realized how down to earth and sweet you are. This video really helped me and makes me believe that I can sing without having to be perfect or meet expectations. Thank you so much for that ❤️❤️

Classical singers develop what they call 'squillo' which is a bright pingy sound (also called Singers Formant) so that their voices carry. It's basically twang/nasal airflow/whatever you want to call it but in italian... because they're classical singers... gotta be fancy.

THIS WAS SO HELPFUL! I KEPT MANIPULATING MY VOICE IN SO MANY WAYS AND WAS TRYING TO HARD AND KINDA FORGOT MY REAL VOICE. BUT THIS REALLY HELPED ME TO JUST SIMPLY SING INA RELAXED MANNER WITHOUT REALLY STRAINING MY VOICE AND I CAN SING HIGH NOTES WITHOUT TRYING TOO HARD OR DREADING IT.
