Racers don't just stay on the inside. Race cars try hit an apex. They start wide, go to the inside and go back out. This maximises the radius of the turn. The centrifugal force required for a (circular) turn is inversely proportional to the radius and proportional to the square of velocity. Your centrifugal force comes from the tires, and has a limit given downforce and tire condition, so you have to optimise speed and radius. Make your radius bigger, go faster.

@@lyntonfleming they meant the corner of the side railing. The track's railing isn't just 1 solid piece, it's several connected pieces. If one of those pieces is slightly misaligned and a corner juts out, your car could catch that and, at best, cause you to spin out. At worst, your car turns and tumbles, sending you flying straight into the next wall at high speed.

Don’t forget the super speed ways! You have to pass in a pack - or you’ll lose speed, drop backwards, and get passed by the cars behind you (instead of moving forward and passing the cars in front of you). So, there’s more to it than just your speed and location on the track.
@Amin.Ashraf
@Amin.Ashraf Год назад
Don't forget the race strategies. You to adapt your strategy with changing race condition and event on track. Do you want to do a pit stop or not if safety car/pace car come out. Losing position now and try get it back later with a fresher tyres. Or try increasing the gap just enough for a pit window before the tyres are out. So, there is more to it than getting a tow from a car infront.

@benjamink2398
@benjamink2398 Год назад
To be fair, Hank keeps things extremely conceptual and at times somewhat vague. The study of physics is mathematical in nature, and must be if you're going to do it at a higher than middle-school-ish level. That's the part that's hard. That's also the part Hank doesn't go into here. He could. He just doesn't. Good physics teachers don't make physics easy. Physics is never and will never be easy. Good physics teachers make the challenge fun.
@aadityachavan6836
@aadityachavan6836 Год назад
@@benjamink2398 I don't believe everything you're saying. every type of physics taught an any type of school is easy, you just need the right teacher. is what I believe. physics overall, yes very difficult. but my point was more in terms of his explanation skills rather than the actual physics of the situation. he explained it really well is what I wanted to say. some people can really twist it up for their listeners
@benjamink2398
@benjamink2398 Год назад
@@aadityachavan6836 Sure. And yet physics is very complicated by its nature. Hank is correct that "You can just use the wall, and then you don't have to worry about your tires, you can just gun it". But any physics class worth its salt is going to ask you as a student to elaborate on and understand exactly *why* a wall, even with it destroying the surface of the car, can allow a car to maintain a higher speed around a turn than our best tires can. Maybe that does make intuitive sense, but physics is often counterintuitive too. So we do the math to make sure it's understood.
@benjamink2398
@benjamink2398 Год назад
@@aadityachavan6836 I'm not disagreeing with you, btw. Hank is a great guy that explains things simply and well. But there's more to being a teacher than that. If you want a thorough understanding of a subject, watching RU-vid shorts on it will literally never give that to you. Ever. Even if you watched them for years on end. At some point you have to do the work, have that work checked, get feedback, do more work, and develop the understanding and skills in tandem necessary to thoroughly LEARN. It sucks, maybe, but it's true. A good physics teacher will explain things well. Yes. A good physics teacher won't be unnecessarily confusing. Yes. But a good physics teacher will make you work. Will make you uncomfortable. Will give you new, unique problems you don't know how to do at first glance and make you come to the right solution on your own. This is difficult. But it's how real learning takes place.

The thing about this is there’s a balance. Racing lines are about flowing into and out of corners as smooth as possible while keeping the best balance of speed and distance as possible. Hugging the inside helps but only if you enter from the outside first, maximizing your speed and finding a way to make the best possible exit as well. It’s about maximizing your average speed.

The pov that best shows just how fast he was going is from the stands… and essentially, he put the car on the wall, and LET GO of the wheel, just floored it and rode the wall. Scary shit, especially at those speeds. He’ll go down as the first and only person to ever do it in nascar

Not just that you're already "crashing into it" by already being on the outside wall, but because the radius is greater, you can take a curve faster when you're on the outside because of reduced centrifugal force. This is one reason why good trucker drivers will take the outside of a curve when taking a cloverleaf ramp onto or off of a highway, it reduces our risk of rolling over for any given speed versus taking the inside. This also applies to slick conditions, when its icy its tempting to take the inside of a curve with the thought that you have a bigger safety margin because you're farther from the outside of a curve, but in actuality you're more likely to slide out because of the tightness of the curve.

Whats typically done is hugging the outside wall during the straight segments, so the cars can make as shallow of a turn as possible- they take a gentle turn so that they graze the inside wall as they go through the turn, and then return to the outside wall just as they're straightening out. The less you have to turn, the faster you can go before you spin out or destroy your tires. Watch for this the next time you watch a race, watch as the cars essentially cut the corner as much as they possibly can.

Watching Trackmania records has taught me the best way to do it is to take the BOTH LANES as fast as possible. Taking the outside during straights and inside during turns gives you the widest turning radius possible, allowing for more speed during the turn with less risk of losing traction.

From what I've heard the best way to take a turn is to start on the outside, hit the apex on the inside, and end on the outside again. That way you're steering the least and can take it at the fastest possible speed without losing control of the car.
