I grew up in Mississippi in the 40’S listening to this very song. Somethings get better as age envelopes our lives and matures us to the everlasting pleasures of life.
I remember my Dad singing this song in the late 50's. Would listen to it on Springbok radio, the only early morning (04:00) radio station playing into Northern Rhodesia (Zambia) in my youth. Still love it and it's definitely a "sing along".
This was one of the earliest songs I remember learning from my Parents ( Darcy& Olive Roycroft) many years ago, it's nice to listen to it again, just beautiful many thanks
Last Saturday night I got married Me and my wife settled down Now me and my wife are parted Gonna take a little stroll downtown Irene goodnight, Irene goodnight Goodnight Irene, Goodnight Irene I'll see you in my dreams
As a teenager I grew up with this beloved song "Goodnight Irene." Am now 78 years old and remember vividly this crazy song !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you so much Nashville Jam !!!!!!!!!!!! Gratefully, Robert S.J. Hu October 22, 2020.
Hi Robert, i'm 77 and always loved this song ever since i heard it performed by the Weavers more than 70 years ago when my father would play it on his gramophome
Evergreen song atthe age of 8yrs I used to see and old gentleman look for his Irene who broke his heart during christmas parties he would look under all the tables chairs a son to remember in praise of him and his love
Even after all of these years, I can visualize my mom, I can hear her voice. She was a wonderful cook and made the best pies. Sometimes I get all melancholy thinking about her, other times I deal with it ok. What else can you do but deal with it.
Joseph... Daddy used to sing this song, too. He died over 10 years ago at the age of 94... Mom, too, at 94. Miss 'em both. This song brings back good memories.
My name is Irene. Never knew until my Mom pasted away that it was one of the songs my Mom always played. My Aunt told me this and that’s how l got my name Irene. Never knew this song existed.
Grazie, che mi avete dedicato questo brano., che non conoscevo . Il mio nome proprio IRÉN ( ungherese ) ma viene la parola pace in greco . Tuttavia un bellissimo nome , che lo chiamano tutto il mondo.
Great music. I love this kind of music. I have a very close cousin who got a stroke in 2004 and has been sick. I haven't seen for a long time I think I will take her this song. Her name is Irene.
Thank You Nashville Jam. I'm sorry I poured my heart and how I feel about my country, South Sudan. We the Lost Boys of Sudan are dwindling down and most of us came to America through Church Sponsorship. Thank you America for that help and God already noticed. -Thank you, Chol Akuany
I'm one of those who like looooong songs. If there are many alternative verses, I like hearing as many of them as possible - maybe even all. But very rarely do musicians do my favour. These guys did! And they did it in a way that might convince more people that it's nice this way too! Beautiful arrangement. Not an easy thing to do to a song that's been arranged so many times before. And not only they did it, but they even kept it simple. Not seeking to surprise, just playing ang singing good. (Some of the voices, e.g. the last one, are outsanding.)
My beautiful older sister was called Irene and we had this on a 78. Always remember her, every time I hear it. Played by so many genres. Written by Leadbelly.
Leadbelly!! This is such a great song! An artists that has transcended decades of music. So proud that he hails from Shreveport, LA. Not much good comes from this area, but he is definitely the cream of the crop!
Well, Leadbelly makes up for everything ... the cream of the crop, for sure. Though this version is very sanitized, as you know, he wrote, "...I GET you in my dreams" which means something very different. The Weavers sanitized and sweetened it, but this version sounds excellent! Just different from leadbelly. I agree. Great song. So much of what he wrote and performed ws outstanding.
When I was 14 years ol, and we all went to a local skating rink, this was the last song at night, to let us know the night was over. So many memories.❤️
Keep up the good work because the World needs a good music. What makes a good music by the way? It's the ears and maybe hearts that should answer that question. For me, music has been my rock and soul. I listen to geed music when I'm down like when someone stormed into my village's Church in Makol Cuei, Bor, South Sudan and killed over 20 people. Actions like that are not acceptable in 2020. How have we fail as a society,eh? We humans have come a long way and we do have bad days but the hope and the will and the love for our fellow human beings and animals and even trees and rocks keeps us motivated and alive. Covid-19 may take lives but shall never take good hearts. Stay safe and remember to be kind to yourself so that you may extend that kindness to others around you. If kindness was a disease, our World would be more better and happier. I remember when someone I didn't know knit me a "sifinja", it is kind of a shoe you wear indoors. That woman was Dr. Adina Mcbain's mother. Good humans like Adina always aim to help others and when I came to Mount Allison university, she did her best to tutor me Chemistry but my heart and mind was somewhere else. I love good people like that, people who just rub their kindness onto others. We must learn from the bees and united as a World in order to see the future.....because I have travelled there in my mind and it's magnificent. May God help us reach that far.
Please listen to Dinka Bor Songs, especially Alok. If you love Anthropology and great vibrating traditional beats performed by modern boys and girls of South Sudan, the you're in for a treat. Thank you my people(South Sudanese) for being mainly peaceful for the last 2 years. Was it Covid or has Almighty God finally reached deep into our hearts? Either way, I'm glade. Be kind, be you and never forget to teach our children well because they are the future after you and I are dead.
I just love this channel. I keep revisiting all the videos. Always great singers and musicians. Like one of the comments I also would enjoy reading a listing of the entertainers. Either way I will keep watching and listening. Ms. Lou from Louisiana
outstanding expressive & melodic upright bass solo with descending run. 6:42. worth the listen multiple times to capture his feel after a restrained performance beforehand! also, hats off to hip blue twist to the melody & phrasing by vocalist with the good-looking mandolin at @: 2:02.That said, go back to Leadbelly's recording for the real listening deal.
😀😀😀 LIKE YOUR KIND COMMENT SO REFRESHING AND ENJOYABLE TO LISTEN AND WATCH. BIG TKS TO JIM LAUDERDALE FOR GETTING ALL THESE BEAUTIFUL SINGERS AND MUSICIANS ALL ON ONE STAGE SHOW. WOW WOW. 😀♥️😀♥️😀♥️😀♥️😀♥️😀♥️😀♥️ THE COUNTRY TIGERS CANADA
Jim Lauderdale isn't mentioned in the title or accompanying information for this video. However, it looks like he's one of the people who brought this group together and is one of the soloists. To me, he's one of the greatest country singers of all time, and his contribution to promoting country music is immeasurable.
GREAT JOB JIM FOR THIS VIDEO AND THE WHOLE GROUP OF PEOPLE THAT HELPED MAKE THIS MINI CONCERT. SUPER JOB BY ALL AND SO,SO,SO, ENJOYABLE. BEST WISHES TO YOU ALL KEEP COUNTRY MUSIC COUNTRY ♥️😀♥️😀♥️😀♥️😀♥️😀♥️😀♥️😀 THE COUNTRY TIGERS CANADA
This song has been stuck in my head for days now! The dark verses about drugs and suicide are another example of how a seemingly benign old folk tune can be deep. Depth is what we all need, and with the number of talented folks on stage this song could have gone on for 45 minutes! I'da sang along the whole time. #clickonthechicken #1tribemusic
Huddie 'Lead Belly' Ledbetter gets the credit here for this awesome song. He's resting in musical heaven, jamming with all of the greats from Bach to John Prine.
Leadbelly is rotting in hell 😂 I love his songs but he’s a convicted murderer who was terribly abusive to anyone around him when he had liquor in him. Literally do 1 google search and read. We should stop putting artists/celebrities on an alter. Most of them are terrible people.
Merci mes amis c est quoi cette guitare 8 cordes j ai appris avec 6 cordes j ai tout a refaire bon je vous adore bonheur à vous continuez cette belle musique 😮merci😢😅
