Debi Singh, the notorious, fearsome tax collector in British Raj in India came from Panipat to Murshidabad for trading. He could not do anything major under the rule of British and French traders. But he was clever. He joined the powerful Reza Khan as a tax collector and finally became the chief tax collector under Warren Hastings of East India Company.
He was inhuman, unmerciful and tyrant in course of pertaining his duties of tax collection from the poor farmers. The extent of such atrocity had gone such a high that the farmers were compelled to run and hide in jungles. The greatest famine was occurred in 1176 of Bengali calendar which was the outcome of the acts of Debi Sing.
Stealing the share of taxes he gathered forcefully, he made a huge amount of wealth by which he almost ruled the area and established a dynasty named Nashipur Raj. He also built a huge mansion named Nashipur Rajbari.
