In this video I go over the key concepts you’ll need to know about the OPT model! There are very slight differences between the 6th and 7th edition that I noted, but if you can have this info memorized you’ll be looking good when it comes to taking the test! If this was hard to understand try and rewatch it until you get it down, or join me on my weekly zoom calls where we go over this and much more! Would you rather read a huge textbook or save time & stress by using our guide and zoom sessions to talk it over? If you are interested in taking the NASM CPT and want help studying for it, comment below or message me so we can make sure you pass it! We have helped around 1,500 people pass so far, will you be the next one?!

Thank you for this video! 💖 Your video is actually the 1st video I watched to get introduced to the OPT model. Now I’m trying to read the tables on each of the phases of the OPT model (starting on p. 699, 7th edition), but I’m getting very confused about how to interpret some of the ‘Acute Variables’. As I was trying to read the tables on each of the OPT model phases, these are the questions that came up: *1)* When is the rest period allowed? Is it after performing each set of a single exercise? Is it after performing all sets for a single exercise? Or is it after completing a single circuit of exercises? *2)* If an exercise only has 1 set, which is the case with the cardio & stretching exercises, when is the rest period applicable then? *3)* Most exercises need to be done for multiple sets (e.g., 2-4 sets). How are the sets performed? Are they performed one after the other, or should the person move through all of the different exercises before they can do another set of a specific exercise? *4)* On Phase 1 (Stabilization Endurance), under the Resistance Training section, it says to perform “1-3 exercises per body part or movement pattern”. How many exercises is that in total then? Does this mean the resistance training should only focus on training specific muscle groups (e.g., legs)? Or does it mean that it should focus on multiple body parts, and just pick 1-3 exercises per body part? *5)* RM stands for repetition maximum, but what does 12-20 RM and 8-12 RM indicate? I realize that these numbers are the same as the number of reps, so I’m not sure what the difference is. *6)* What exactly is meant by the section on the table labeled “Client’s Choice”? Should the client pick some additional exercises that they want to do, on top of everything else that has already been chosen? How many additional exercises is it okay for the client to pick, and how many reps/sets should there be? *7)* On Phase 5 (Power Training), it says that rest should be “1-2 minutes between pairs; 3-5 minutes between circuits”. Since Phase 5 has supersets, what exactly is meant by “pairs” and “circuits”? These are the ‘Acute Variables’ from the tables that I find confusing. I would appreciate any videos that further explain these topics, so that it will be easier to interpret these tables, and have a better understanding of the phases. Thank you 🙏🏻

Glad you liked the video! I’m uploading one by tomorrow for quick tips on how to memorize the OPT model acute variables, just for the resistance exercises (strength training) main one tested. (1) The rest periods I’ll go over are taken after the circuit/superset is done, so all exercises are completed for the first set then rest. (2) Stretching just focus on how long performing the stretches and what type you would perform with certain clients (static/active/dynamic). (3) They should perform one set of all the exercises before moving on to the next set, as the phases incorporate circuits or supersets. If it says straight set then you would complete all sets of one exercise before moving onto the next exercise. (4) Don’t worry about the total, it’s saying you can do 1-3 exercises per exercise/pattern not a specific number. Phase 1 likes a lot of total body movements like stability ball squat curl to press, lunge curl to press, etc. You would select exercises that make sure you hit each pattern/body part at least once during the workout. (5) RM = rep max, which like you said just means the maximum amount of reps that could be performed for that set. (6) Clients choice is completely up to them on what they’d like to do and it would be combined with the workout you provided them. Don’t worry about that for test. (7) 1-2 minutes between each exercise and 3-5 minutes after both are completed.
