I've been deployed to the Levant, and my consensus is the overbearing necessity to be ruled by religion inhibits the growth of a nation to function properly in the modern world. Its akin to stepping back centuries in time. The amount of progress that has been lost is virtually impossible to recoup. It can be a beautiful thing as many Muslims I've met have been the most polite and caring people I've ever met, but also saddening that their religious beliefs are shrouding the potential of their society.

I will not watch this absurdity, but the title of the video attracted me: Nasser led from the dream to a catastrophe. Well, the great powers were afraid and their skin shivered at the name Nasser. Because of Nasser, more than 3/4 of the Arab countries gained their independence, and because of Nasser, the Arabs became well educated, trained and qualified, and because of Nasser, the Soviet Union became a supportive force. For the Arabs, and because of Nasser, non-neutrality was established. Because of Nasser, Egypt entered into wars that did not concern it after it was one of the richest countries in the world, and major countries owed it. Because of Nasser, we created the Suez Canal, in which more than a million Egyptians were martyred because of the occupation and because of Nasser. We fought the tripartite aggression that tried to occupy us again, France and Britain, and the stupid little Israel, which, despite our knowledge, has no knowledge of war and needs someone to fight for it. Egypt was fighting everything American in 67 and 73. Arab nationalism existed in the conscience of the Arabs because of Nasser Revolution against the occupation and supporting revolutions against it because of Nasser The largest funeral the world has ever witnessed will be for Nasser, a person who wanted freedom for all Arab countries. Countries such as Britain, all of Europe, and America feared him. May God have mercy on Gamal Abdel Nasser ✌🏻🇪🇬🕊

The mistake that Gamal Abdel Nasser committed was that he entered Egypt into many unnecessary wars, such as the war in Yemen My father served 7 years in the army, including five years in the era of Gamal Abdel Nasser and two years in the era of Sadat, and he participated in the war of 67 and 73, and he was going to participate in the Yemen war, then his destination changed to Sinai at the last moments for the war of 67 May God have mercy on my father, he passed away in December 2019 💔

Many in the comments fail to note the most important point of the documentary. Nasser allowed Jordan, Syria and Palestine to force him into a war with Israel, though he did not want this war. The result was Egypt’s humiliation, military defeat, the end of the pan-Arab movement, and growth of Islamism. Nasser chose a one party state rather than democracy, which required a secret police, imprisonment and torture of dissidents. He was so popular, he did not need to be a dictator, and could have achieved more as a democratic president.

At the Bandung Afro-Asian conference in 1955, Nehru counselled everybody to adopt Parliamentary democracy. Nasser who was the youngest attendee at Bandung responded with the argument that having elected parliaments in the Arab world would only lead to oil companies buying up the elected legislators. This was very much possible but military dictators can also be bought. At least, in an electoral system, there is a chance to elect a new govt. Nasser was a great leader and the LBJ administartion that succeeded Kennedy in 1963 totally embraced European colonialism . The open sore still in the 60s was the unresolved Palestinian refugee problem. Arab unity was essential. Resistance has to be patient. Better to build up strength and tackle Palestinian refugee issues and grievances in the meanwhile with rehabilitation assistance .

As an Indonesian we basically learn that Gamal Abdel Nasser was a friend of our 1st president Sukarno. Just like what they tell about Sukarno, they barely tell anything about the negatives of Nasser during his reign. For me what happened to Egypt not something too far from what happened to Indonesia with periods full of power struggle between leftist politicians, corrupt military officers, radical Muslims and the masses that actually want an honest democratic government but at least unlike Egypt, we actually get our democracy. Sure nothing totally perfect, our politics still haunted by our past but we have to move on. Wish the best for both countries.

One social aspect told to me by Middle and Upper Class Egyptians of Nasser’s economic management was the gradual decline of housing standards - the imposition he made on rental increase by Landlords resulted in little or no expenditure on repairs. His heart was in the right place, like many of his policies, but he faced impossible tasks - however, he demonstrated great ability as a ‘politician’. He probably was a great influence on Gaddafi, who wanted to achieve across Africa what Nasser attempted in the Arab World. Their deaths indicate the difference in esteem their countrymen held for them.

@CarlosGarcia I do not fully agree with your comment generalising Muslim countries when there are economically wealthy, infrastructural and technologically advanced countries such as: U.A.E, Qatar, kuweit, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia etc Some of them like Qatar and Saudi Arabia are one of the biggest investors in the west specially in the UK where I live. Bare in mind that one of the main reason of the collapse of Credit Suisse the second largest bank in Switzerland was it's top backer the Saudi National Bank refusing to give it more money. Qatar Investment holds 12.7% stake in Barclay bank, 17% In the Volkswagen group and Porsche and 20% of Heathrow airport in London.

It is true that we should not generalize, but it is a fact that in Islamic countries the institutions are not democratic or independent enough to confront political power. Islamic societies always go behind a leader. Regarding the wealth of the Gulf monarchies, no one can deny it, another thing is the distribution of that wealth, the freedoms that these peoples enjoy. According to my particular opinion, the Gulf monarchies are very artificial and their people do not intervene in the management of their wealth.
@ismaelsani2941
@ismaelsani2941 8 месяцев назад
@carlos the issue in my opinion is the failure to understand the differences in culture and governance globally. We westerners fail to understand that our democracy may not adhere nor appeal to everyone and people have their own customs. Like most westerners alot of the opinions are based on biased media coverage not experience of living there. As for distribution of wealth alot of the so called sovereign islamic nations have free education including university locally and internationally free healthcare and are tax free, debts and mortgages are interest free. We do not manage the distribution of wealth in the west as well, they are managed by appointed individuals who make economical decisions based on their opinions and expertise same as in the islamic monarchies, hence the money awarded to projects and contracts, increase an decrease of interest rates that citizens of western countries have no part in the decision making process. As for rallying behind a leader/individual we do that as well e.g president, prime minister etc. By voting for them in expectations that they will change our lives and change direction of the countries for the best, based on their campaigns, slogans, policies. Eg: Donald Trump, Boris Johnson, Barack Obama etc. I believe in giving credit when some credit is due.

If Nasser hadn't made so many mistakes, the entire middle east would look very different right now. Likely one or two unified Arab states, greater prosperity, peace and trade with Israel and a much more secular, and socially functioning Arab culture. Turkey and Iran would be a buffer states. But he chose war with Israel, dictatorship, authoritarian politics, and ultimately empowered Islamism - fulfilling the West's biggest fears and criticisms of islamic civilization.

He was the hero, the man who never allow the religion division in his nation. I was lucky to live in Egypt at Nasser's time.

It seems that the documentary ignored the Brotherhood's confessions of the truth (the Mansheya incident), and that was after the Egyptian revolution in 2011, when the Brotherhood thought that things were heading in their favor, so they began to open the pages of their history away from fears, and therefore Youssef Al-Qaradawi (the Grand Mufti of the Brotherhood) admitted that the incident was real, as well The Grand Guide of the Muslim Brotherhood, Mahdi Akef, admitted that the incident was not a representation, and others admitted that, and all of this is documented and published on RU-vid. Part of the Brotherhood's strategy of violence is to practice violence against others, then claim that what happened was government forgery, and issue statements and books renouncing violence.
