It was as if he had penned the script himself! With calls for his departure getting louder and louder, Nasser Hussain demonstrated why he was one of the toughest cricketers ever to wear an England shirt. Despite running out debutant Andrew Strauss for 83, Hussain carried on to a magnificent hundred and won the match for his country. It would turn out to be his final ever appearance, as he bowed out from international cricket on his own terms.

Marcus Trescothick was out injured in that match. Straus came in his place and played brilliantly. But, Trescothick recovered before the following match and was set to come back into the side. That meant Straus being dropped to maintain balance in the line up. Hussain didn't want the young lad to sit in the sidelines after performing so well on his debut. So, he declared his retirement. Mad respect to Hussain for seeing the big picture and being a class act. Not a lot of people would have done that. A true gentleman through and through. Hats off.

It wasn't Trescothick but it was Vaughan(who was then the captain of the team) who was injured for the first test. Strauss came in to take his place - Trescothick not only played but also captained the team in the 1st test of the series. Because the return of the captain would mean Strauss would miss out, Nasser Hussain volunteered to drop out of the side and announced his retirement, which allowed Strauss to stay in the team with Vaughan slotting in at 4 when the team went to Headingley for the next test match.

I had a school tag rugby tournament when I was about 10 that he was at watching his son, who was the same age as me, and myself and a few of the other cricketers in my class walked over to him during a break and asked him a couple of questions about playing for England, as any young fans would, and he immediately told us to go away even though he was on his own standing there, with nothing to do. That wasn't the only time he has done such a thing. When he is not surrounded by cameras and other pros, he can be a very, very arrogant man.

Essex Legend with Gooch before him and Cook after. 3 great England batsmen and I’ve had the pleasure of watching all three. We don’t have many players picked for England these days but when we do they’re usually great and become captain 😜

I don't remember calls for him to go growing louder, if I remember rightly this and the previous summer (and winter tour in between) had seen a fantastic resurgence in English cricket after the doldrums of the 90s and anticipation was actually starting to build for the ashes. Hussein was at the heart of it, and when people talk about 2005 we don't hear any more of all the hard work in the years that led up to it that made it possible

It was Nasir who helped England believe that they could beat Aussies in Ashes. Till Nasir came in, England were really a side struggling for victories. They were as someone was once called ‘good in bits and pieces’. Then came in Michael Vaughan who carried Nasir’s legacy as captain.

These players deserve respect. They left the game at high points of their career. They didnot stretch their career just for record like Tendulkar
