I don't care what anyone says...I love Dessay! The voice has changed...after 15yrs as a coloratura what do you expect? I think she's singing Damn well to have gone through two vocal surgeries. I only pray that she lasts a long time.
Of course, everybody has his/her favourite male/female singer, but I think all of them deserve a credit for singing such wonderful and demanding pieces of music. I believe most people have absolutely no idea how hard it is and how long it takes to get to sing like this and, after reaching one's entire vocal range, to convey an artful touch to one's performance like Dessay nicely does. I'm a big Callas fan, but, please, let's just shut up and listen.
I keep coming back, and back to Natalie Dessay. I have never been so attracted to a performer of anything as I have been to her. As I look again at a lot of her performances, interviews, rehearsals and informal films of parts of her life I feel "YES, She is just as wonderful as I thought." I just hope that new things involving her keep being put on you tube.
I cannot say that this was her best performance, but i think everyone knows (or everyone should know) who Natalie Dessay and what a remarkable and world unique soprano / actress she is!!!
I was in the Met 20/5/06 at the Volpe Gala and one way or the other she was very impressive and kept the attention and emotion of the audience. More than a few had tears in their eyes. It shows you how different a live performance can be from the tape. The New Yorker Magazine declared her the best of the night!
I could not agree more. When all is said and done, I am all for the enjoyment of the composers music. I love Bellini and despite the singing and the staging, he delivers each time!
Listen to that perfect legato, how she hits notes dead in the center of the pitch, and how she really caresses the vocal line. I just wish she would carry that into the aria. All of a sudden, all her dramatics darken her tone and her chest sinks. If she would just stand tall and take good breaths, those high notes wouldn't sound so strained. If she would just focus on singing beautifully, all the acting that she's so famous for would still effortlessly shine through.
I like this voce better than the old one, now she has more depth and there's no need to just expect trills, unless that´s just my opinion, she´s great!
it's true that the presence of setting is always better than an absence of setting. For La Somnambula, I think it's the same French stage director (Laurent Pelly) who did La Fille du Régiment. Besides, walking in one's sleep is a sort of madness, cut from reality. Dessay is excellent in these surreal states. I'm looking forward to this!
Many thanks for this nice video. I love this aria and Natalie Dessay's voice. This aria is not easy to sing. But the first part (Ah, non credea) is nicely lyrical and in the second part of the aria (Ah, non giunge) she is in her element. The coloraturas and top tones (some es3) which stand not everybody in the notes are sung excellently. Class! She lives her roles.
Ah! non giunge uman pensiero Al contento ond'io son piena: A' miei sensi io credo appena; Tu m'affida, o mio tesor.
Buenas noches.
It is so strange seeing her sing in this expensive looking background. In, I think, 2009 the met did a wonderful modern version that captured the working class environment in which the opera is set. Dessay was tremendous as Amina, and WAS Amina. That production is on you tube and very well filmed.
Maybe it‘s because about 80% of the notes start half a tone low and this fact annoys people with a good musical ear. I suppose the reason why there are so few is that good ear is not so common.
@Drelnis She moves me you know and that means there is emotion in her interpretation. Few do move me. Each has different perceptions now and feelings. She had 2 surgeries on her vocal chords, I Am amazed that she can still sing:O
I love Callas she was just divine, of course, but but she died when I was in kindergarten (and had stopped singing before I was born). I want to experience some live opera, so I am looking forward to hearing Natalie at the Met next month. I hope she is in good shape (nasty viruses, stay away from her!!).
I am newer to Dessay's voice, but find it charming. When I first turned this on I thought, "Ah, Anna Moffo sings it far better," but after finishing it I must say that she does sound lovely, though I've heard it better.
Dessay's high e-flat is not even close to being retired. You should hear her Sempre libera. Maybe I'm blinded by my being a crazy fan, but if anyone in the summer program that I'm doing sang e-flats like that, they'd be singing with NYC opera at the very least.
I like Bel Canto opera in concert style and I listen on recordings a lot, though I enjoyed HD cast of Met Puritani by Netrebko. Dessay is a one of the best Bel Canto interperter and she studied to be an actress also a good dancer. There are many talented opera singers to make Bel Canto fans more than happy.
