Go to polarmonkeys.com/ and use the code ‘Koa and Nate' for a special $100 off your order. Nate and Koa breakdown the Vans Pipemasters contest. go over new types of surfers and tell wild stories of foiling on the northshore.
You two Buds Rule. INSANE story out in the deep off Turtle Bay and life decisions Nathan! Radical..It is so fun to watch your channel and the cool bravery that you always both exhibit.
That was a buttery smooth ad read. Made me almost think about probably not getting whatever it was the ad was about. Truly terrifying story. Great storytelling.
I actually loved how your heats for P.M turned out. I didn't have to watch all the b.s in between. Had all my favorites surfers in two heats worked out great for me 😂 I loved watching you guys this year!! I hope it was the beginning of a winning year for John and all of you fellas. AND get Makua on!!!
Guests...Jamie of course (his podcast with Nathan talking grom days was the best), Alex & Koa's Dad, The Florence bros all together, Kelly & Jon together recounting their epic heats...as far as team names, Orca Enthusiasts, Tiger Bait, Foiled Again, Sponsor Needy...dj
Losing the board story was great to hear - that's a massive feat in itself, with that level of fear and the potential for adrenalin kicking in too early you'd have been exhausted and potentially lost in the currents. Been in similar situations myself - less the sharks/smaller waves and no reefs and man that was terrifying. Your situation was epic and it's testament to your fitness and stamina.
Great job guys. Can you get Kainoa Mcgee. The only guy to drop knee pipe over 25ft. The one who paddled out to the kook interupting the contest years ago and let em have it. From the most insane drop knee body boarder to north shore lifegaurd. I wanna here his story.
Nice one, guys. You went for the flotation device, Nate - good call. Nice to know you feel fear too sometimes. Team name for you guys: *Bottom of the Barrel*
The wave pool people also may not understand (or even care) about currents, rip tides or tide cycles. There should also be at least one nurse shark in every wave pool.
Buddy and I were the only ones surfing Avalanche at dusk, he eventually went in and I heard a scream that I thought was a girl on the beach getting kidnapped or something. Just me out there at Dusk eventually I get a wave, get to the beach and my buddy was the one that screamed because he got brushed by a 9ft tiger checkin him out. Good thing we were riding big guns
You guys are totally right My granny could be towed into a 50 footer it's not even real surfing it's tow surfing different altogether real surfing is you paddle out there and you paddle and catch a wave... They should have the granny big wave Nationals tow in...😂😂😂😂
Gnarly Nate! Great story teller you are…I don’t have as gnarly a story as yours but it’s funny how every surfer has their near death surf story. And yes no worries about orcas. They our friends in the ocean. If you see one, I guarantee you there are no sharks nearby.
You should always have Eli on as a “guest co-host” whenever he is available. You can have him and another actual “guest” on at the same time. He adds a great perspective and energy to your pods.
Nate, just listened to your STAB interview. Congrats on your hard work paying off! I think you need to get a brand/logo like “this is livin” or “stay psyched”. Something to market for merch. Your income would go through the roof! 🤙
Nate and his shark story crack me up. I think anyone who has had a swim like that in the ocean have had those thoughts of anticipation of a shark attack. lol Knowing that right now it is Tiger shark mating season and they are more riled up than normal. Also, they can hear your heartbeat so with you panic swimming, that wasn't good. Glad you are still here to talk about it Nate. You guys should have Ocean Ramsey on your podcast to talk about her swim with Big Blue the Great White Shark.
The pool generation is an interesting one because the whole push has been “get waves too people who don’t live on the ocean”. But nobodies talking about how it’s only really well off people that can take advantage of it. I could’ve grown up next door to a pool and my parents would not have been able to get me in there. $200+ for an hour? No chance then and even now and I’m fully in a decent paying career role.
OMG I could feel the terror when Nate was telling you about his foiling adventure nothing is spooky than dark ocean water. Deep Blue is the 5000# great white in Hawaii the video of her and Ocean Ramsey is wild. Orca's don't bother people in the water, but Nate's correct the are brutal eating great white liver and whale tongue. Usually if they are around the shark's will leave. Looking forward to more great podcasts, keep up the amazing work. Thanks Koa, Nate, & Jack Happy New Year to you and your families 🎉🎈🎉
Another epic pod, thanks legends. I think Makua and Uncle Eddy would make epic guests… but probably anyone from your circle. “As I swim over the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil….”
you nailed it Kia, Tow surfers are beyond lame, there’s a place for it but you can’t have tow surfing with out surfing. Which is why Kai doing chop hops at the end of a section is so lame. I just imagine guys like Jeff Bezoz with an electric drone tow into a slab with a helium pull vest to get him floating in the air above the whitewater
Great updates on everything! So loved watching the finals live with the 3 Florence Brothers as IMO you all won it together … upon the shittest Pipe ridiculous conditions out in the water laughing about it 😂 … Elli’s rebar story was stunning and so grateful he made it, thanks to his mom getting him out of Wahiwa! Hopefully no one be doing that Waimea ‘sport’ again. Crazy & wonderful story out Kahuku with John John! And you guys so funny about the sharks and getting tossed like a seal 😂 of horrors. BTW … IMO the WSL will be imploding on itself this year … making way for things a lot better 2024 … year of Wooden Dragon … Great ❤ Alohas from Kona (from an old 60’s Laniakea-Himalayas-Dairymen’s timer) … as you guys become ‘old men’ turning 30 … 😂😂😂
Great conversation guys, this such a good podcast series!! ( Team name suggestion: ‘Ocean OGs’) … incredible survival stories, Nate! Your back, your Irish campaign & now this foil emergency 🚨 … stay safe - though it’s a great relief to us all that your survival skills are so on point ⭐️🍀🌏
My brother and I spent a day surfing, SUP surfing, and efoiling out at Pokai Bay in Sept and saw a big tiger shark. It’s the most spooky feeling when you see one cruising around underneath you. Nate’s story way scarier. What a great podcast 🤙🏼
The ONLY reason I like wave pools is to push the sport further with airs that can be done. The progression with airs has been stagnant for so long it would be nice to see some movement forward. Practice them in the pool and then bring it to the actual surf. Stuff like that alleyoop method john threw at backdoor during pipemasters would be sick to see, it looked absolutely amazing.
Hope Koa is doing good man, get better soon! Btw, wasnt there a recorded podcast with Ivan Florence? And why is Beach Great saying Nate Florence my be cut from the Vans roster? SO MANY QUESTIONS
Language is surfing. Those that know the often unwritten rules will be the best surfer/communicators. "Dude" and "like" and "effing" combined with other colloquialisms can be a confusing and miscommunicating shallow reef to navigate. Doubleoverhead. Just saying.
Nate you literally lived my fear! That swim oh my god!!! Any chance you get some go pro footage when you go down foiling again of the area and do a commentary of it and show the shark data?
The north shore wasn’t a movie it was a prophecy . Some guy named Eric from Wisconsin ( Madison pool champ) will surf pipe masters n after heat turn to Jon n be all “ you and I both know who really won out there ? DONT we ?” ……….. n Jon will say “ me ya toolbox “
Fear holy shit I had a big tiger charge me surfing at a back beach Crescent Head Australia the speed and power was amazing it came at me then ducked just under my board and left me in a giant swirl of water I looked into it’s eyes for that fraction of a second and screamed involuntarily I love that shark so much for not coming back for another sniff. It would have caught pink eye if it had. 💩AARRGH!
Damnit man, thank goodness Mother Ocean was with you guys. That would suck, hard, to hear something happened to any of y'all. This reminded me of the summer Jaws came out. We'd turn the lights out in the swimming pool and go sketch ourselves out in the dark. You fckrs make sure you stay here in this realm! Damnit.
The bar does have to be set… in comparison. If you make surfing a competition. Maybe making fixed points for moves tubes but with margins of flexibility with with wave size. Theres so many variables in surfing no two waves are the same. Its not like a sport with white lines regulations to define margins. So there should be a standard set for amount of points awarded and like you say tally it up. Surfing is never that black and white though. Its too unique in every single way. Even though it can be repetitive all styles. Then you have everyones individual styles stances its so complicated to judge. Thats what makes it beautiful too. Its not really a sport is it even though it can pass as one. Then again i dont watch comps or you to see what points youre racking up so it makes no difference to me… 😂 Like even if you use ai there will have to be a set standard input for certain moves. 😂 then you can measure the wave and scale points to the size of the wave etc but its so souless because ai doesnt have emotions. Tell me watching life isnt emotional. Bro its all sensation. Feeling. Thats what its about. We just need understanding. Thats why i said you guys will change the game. And be real surfers change the world Love you guys..
Question for Shane - Do you have your 90's sideburns mounted on a wall somewhere? And do you secretly hate Ross for still having a decent head of hair. Cheers legend You need Ross as well!
That story of swimming in the ocean in my nightmare. Stopped surfing for like a decade because of sharks, finally got back into it the past few years and now that I can teach my kids. Spooky.
Hey Nate, my FCS Helix leash kept popping off so often in powerful surf I had to chuck it. I saw that you used them on your slab tour and thought if that was the leash you used here they just fucking suck. Might be worth changing it up. 🤙
You shouldn't be foiling in conditions like that without a jetski chase... you guys talk about respect for the ocean all the time and than put yourselves in that situation??? Please stay safe! : )
Maya almost drowning at Nazare and the other guy who just died are only going to make it worse. Now they are making these guys look even more badass. .It's annoying. Anyone with eyes should see they are just stunt men and stunt women and not surfers. Watching some of Nic von Ropps stuff at greenbush this morning and then watch someone tow and just go slowly left on a mush burger is night and day. And I don't even need to mention the stuff nate does. Nate might be the best slab surfer in the world.
Also, I am a skater, I wish I was a surfer but I don't live near any surf. So coming from a non-surfer, I can tell the difference between how difficult and gnarly the stuff you do is compared to the stuff mcnamara does.
Personally I think wave pools or any development in surfing generally means more surfers. How i see it is wave pools open up the door more for rich landlocked people to start learning and then taking surf trips
What you guys said about the tow surf specialists. I would go so far as to say some of them wouldn't even be out there if it wasn't being recorded and uploaded to the RU-vids. Listen everyone surfs for their own reasons and im not here to judge anyone, but things are definitely changing from when I came up, and good to see you guys still repping the paddling and surfing for the sport of it 🙏
I know the terror that you described…sometimes having an imagination is counter productive. That moment when you have to make a choice between two scary scenarios is hard to describe. Your story is a cautionary tale for everyone.
