Nathan Chen had to be perfect, and he was. The American was 8 points behind Yuzuru Hanyu after the short, but put down 5 flawless quads in the free to pull himself from third to first place. It’s Chen’s third, consecutive world champion title. Hanyu’s beautiful free was good enough to put him on the podium alongside teammate Yuma Kagiyama, who’s had an incredible world championship debut, finishing with a silver medal. Asher and Dylan break down the event, including skates from Mikhail Kolyada, Jason Brown, Shoma Uno and Canadian Keegan Messing.

@radioactive_sunflowerz2450

Yeah I can only see him not get gold in Beijing if he somehow falls enough like in the 2018 Olympics or if Hanyu lands a quad axel.
@CarlosCastro_
@CarlosCastro_ 3 года назад
We are talking about a very different Nathan Chen. And prior to him falling during his short program the last he did fell in a competition was at the Olympics. The same cannot be said about Hanyu. And to make matters worse for him he’s hurt himself many times over attempting to keep up with the quads. So for him to say that he’s going to try a quad axel, is basically him trying to commit career ending suicide. But good luck to him.
@radioactive_sunflowerz2450
@radioactive_sunflowerz2450 3 года назад
@@CarlosCastro_ yeah Hanyu even said his big goal was to get two gold medals in the Olympics which he has already achieved, I think Hanyu is aware he is getting older which is why he's so focused on the quad axel, because if he accomplishes it even just once even at the expense of his career he'd go out big making history. I think Hanyu knows he likely won't be able to beat a clean Nathan performance so while he might still compete for his fans I think he's looking to go out on a record. Young skaters wouldn't risk the quad axel but since Yuzu has already enjoyed longevity in his historic career I think he's at the point where he's willing to risk it. Even seeing him land poorly on a quad axel would still be great to see, though I agree that this upcoming era is Nathan's, since such a demanding sport favors the young and Nathan is only getting better. I do love seeing both these guys share the ice because they have an actual challenge to skate against which will encourage more daring and competitive routines. Hanyu is a crown jewel of the sport so no matter what he does these days he'll still be in the history books, which he is aware of. I honestly think he's just staying for the fans as well as finding a point in his career to end on a high point hence the quad axel.
@CarlosCastro_
@CarlosCastro_ 3 года назад
Hanyu needs to be realistic, he has difficulty landing the quads that he does right now, so to say that he wants to land a quad axel is reaching. Specially since he’s hurt himself trying to master the jumps that he does now. It definitely be interesting to see how that works out for him. But I hope that Nathan continues to do what he’s doing because that Olympic gold medal right now is his to lose.
@divinearia1601
@divinearia1601 3 года назад
@@radioactive_sunflowerz2450...a 4A is only worth 12.5 pts. Landing one will put Yuzuru in the history books as the first guy to do one, but it won't necessarily get him a gold. Yuzuru knows that too because it seems he has pretty much given up on the idea of defeating Nathan. Landing a 4A would actually be a far more achievable goal for him at this point. I agree Nathan himself will determine if he is Olympic Champion or not in Beijing. He has been so consistent in the most important competitions through the years and his artistry has improved to the point where if he just skates his high degree difficulty programs as close to perfection as possible, he pretty much becomes untouchable. He's just too good.

As an American he's my personal favorite but Yuzuru is my close second, especially with how Yuzuru has accomplished so much while struggling with asthma as well as have a long successful career. It was pathetic. Nevermind that Nathan has surpassed Yuzuru in the free program for 30+ points. This time it was 40+. And for all of Yuzuru’s intricacies that make his choreography unique, I am certainly NOT entertained out my socks the way this commentator was - ecstatic and screaming in the short program. It’s like they crave the most literal and cliché style possible because for them that’s “artistry”. I wouldn’t be surprised if they fell over themselves enthralled by the “artistry” of Medvedeva’s exaggerated facial expression of agony and were left in tears by it.

@@QQ-wl6yt Yuzuru is more subtle and has more details in his programs but that doesn't mean Nathan is not artistic at all. Yes of course it will be so hard for him to win because he is not from RUS & US, judges won't give him every GOE & PCS he rightfully deserve. Nathan is always overscored, he just needs to land his jumps and the candies will follow. Let's see if judged fairly without inflation and bias can he win over Hanyu. But we will never see that because ISU wants him gone. Which is fine with me tbh, because Hanyu deserve better. That org can rot in hell for killing this sport, their best skater and moneymaker.

I'm rooting for that Japanese little guy taking silver medal. He seems to have everything to be a complete package. I don't think Nathan will compete on ice for much longer after the Olympics next year. He's already said many times he takes his academic performance seriously, prolly more serious than sport. He said that once he did not nail his skating on ice, he could always come back to fix it, but that wasn't the case at school. He majors in one of the hardest and most competitive disciplines, data science/statistics (which is known as the foundation of AI), and has eyes on med school later. That demands a lot more investment of both time and focus. I don't think he can do that and still continue to compete in figure skating. So, I look forward to the little Japanese cutie to continue legacy from Nathan, just as Nathan has continued legacy from Hanyu. Wish the Japanese dude the best!

As someone who went through school for years and got two degrees including a Master's, that would be a HUGE mistake on his part. It's actually the other way around, he can always return to academia in older age, but he can't return to figure skating as his body ages. I work with a bunch of statisticians and there are very few actual data scientists out there, it's not a competitive field if you're actually good at it and can find your niche. One of the smartest data scientists I know didn't get his career really started until after leaving the military in his late 20s and working a bunch of part time jobs afterward until he landed his first full time job in this field. Point is, the brain is an appreciating asset as you go into your 20s and 30s, your body is a depreciating asset. It's always a mistake for hugely talented people to waste their gift.

@@annemary9680 Yes I agree about the chance to pick up education much later. One can always get back to school when getting older. I also agree he can't return to figure skating as his body ages. When I said data science was "competitive" I mean by the level of intellectual efforts and brain work that does have to do with age. Data science is part of my things and it takes a lot of efforts to be competent in the field. As a certified actuary with Ph.D. and minor in engineering, I also understand how much challenge you may run into later if you're not highly motivated nor highly disciplined to work your ass off through your early career life. Starting young always has better chance to excel in your professional field because age and energy do matter to take up heavy workload and challenges. Taking medical practice for another example, an acquaintance of mine who worked as an emergency doctor at his early 30s once mentioned to me that there's a huge difference by age group in how well and how easily one doctor can survive his residency. He saw his older colleagues struggle much to get up on calls. Well, Nathan do not necessarily have to get into that stressful specialty. But it's almost the truth of universe that it's the best to start your lifetime career at young rather than old. It applies to sports, so does many other professional fields, specifically highly skilled professions like data scientists and physicians. At some point, he has to choose one, either pro figure skating or another professional. I believe he can excel in whatever he decides to do in the future. But he can't do both forever. That's my point. 🤣

More than due to focusing on studies he will take a pause from skating bcoz his body is detoriating, one can't imagine the pressure he puts on his body to keep 5 different quads ready and steady, nathan is smart and he knows this sport is for the very young only, so it better to leave on the top of your game and give chance to new talent. Plus after Olympics what would be his motivation ? He is not obsessive to be the next superstar or how many titles he can get nathan is lowkey and mellow but very realistic and rational.

@@mooony94 As an Asian parent, I won't push my child to go all out for a sport for a long time either. Jeremy Lin in NBA is an exception. But I don't think Jeremy has been doing great in last several seasons. I'd rather see them retire at peak and go for a more steady and sustainable profession that entails other skills than physical strength and relentless practice schedules, unless they really have passion surpassing anything else and have tactics to coach younger athletes as a profession. Going for medals in sports competitions is more like challenging yourself and fulfilling your dream. Other than that, all athletes should move on to next stage of life when due time comes. You can never be on the top of your game forever. GOAT doesn't exist. I don't think many fans of star athletes including Fanyu understand that.

I fell in love with Yuma way back at Nebelhorn Trophy when he medalled, put all his soul into the programmes and the announcer for the podium mixed him up with another Japanese skater and didn`t even correct herself. Yuzu said at the press conference that he was training for the 4A too hard and the body got really tired. Having the best 3A in the world, doing 4(?) of them in a raw after one show, he missed them here. Well, he has a dream! But maybe he needs Brian next to him to moderate his zeal

Well done to Nathan Chen to come back from that mistake in the short program, he deserved to win. Disappointed to see Yuzuru make so many mistakes in the Free Skate, but the reality is that his programs were not really good enough to challenge Chen unless Chen makes mistakes. Even in the SP that he won, it was not his usual standard and the clear indication of the lack of positivity was doing only a level three step sequence rather than level 4. Even with a clean Free Skate I doubt that the content would have put him within 8 points of Chen, needs to cut out the mistakes, improve the content and pick music more suited to his artistic style.

It's wild how close your instincts are to reality. Just out of curiosity, I went back and restored all Hanyu's -GOE in his LP, gave him an average +3 GOE for those jumps, plus an additional 3 points in PCS, and he STILL would have lost to Nathan by over 8 points. Even with two perfect programs AND Nathan's mistake in the SP, Hanyu still could not have won. After losing to Nathan at 2019 Worlds, Hanyu was quoted in the press as saying he knew even two perfect programs there weren't going to beat Nathan. That's why I've said to people for years, that Hanyu's gold at the 2018 Olympics would never have happened if Nathan had only missed one jump in his SP. Nathan needs to make multiple mistakes in order for anyone else to have a chance at beating him, and that's what happened in the SP at the 2018 Olympics. Lucky for Hanyu because Nathan never had a case of nerves again. Nathan also won the LP at the 2018 Olympics by 18 technical points over Hanyu and nearly 9 points even after PCS was added. He went on to Worlds 2018 and won with a total score that beat Hanyu's Olympic total just weeks earlier. I've said before, Nathan is truly the only unbeatable skater in the history of the sport. Only Nathan can defeat Nathan, and then somebody else benefits, but when Nathan is at or even near top form, no one can beat him. That's amazing.

Congratulations to all 3 men! Nathan is definitely a favorite for gold in Beijing 2022, but then again, so is Yuma. Like I said in the video for the men's SP, anyone can make mistakes, and here, Yuzuru did. There's a rumor of him having an asthma attack and not having his inhaler with him, but like the champion he is, didn't make excuses for his poor performance. I think training the 4A in Japan, then coming to Sweden and having no rest day in between the Short and Free programs just did not help him. Again, this is not even a real season - the pandemic disrupted so much for everyone. Anyways, I always never worried about Nathan, because in the end, USA will have 3 spots for Worlds and Olympics next year. Yuzuru did his job, getting spots for Yuma and Shoma and whoever else will be in Beijing next year. Glad that Keegan Messing got Canada spots! I hope Roman and Nam can make it to Beijing.

He did make excuses and not only this one time. He's said his asthma attack happened AFTER his free program and he told many times during interviews. He talks regularly about how he has this injury and there was this time with the hole thing too. He has the same ice condition as his competitors and he didn't flop a jump only once in his career. Every time there weren't holes 😒 plus nathan has had a hip injury since a long time, Shoma has had an ankle injury too. Difference, they don't talk about it every chance they get. That's how real champions are. 😊 Him training 4A isn't a reason either. Every high level skater train quads. Don't find him excuses, he lost because he made mistakes.

The stupid comparison to a stuck "BOAT" to Chen. I know it's hard to have any career after a skating one but you guys need to step it up if skating commentary is that one you want to pursue. Otherwise there is the local grocery story with openings.

...and the "BOAT" is stuck at Yale, due to permanent hip injury that ended his career too soon b/c he can't jump any quads... all the best for his new career... while GOAT is continuing making history as the most successful Pro athlete.

Do you think it’s easier to go before your biggest competitor? It seems like it’s super-intimidating to follow a perfect program. My husband even speculated that a skater might throw in a little flub in the short to ensure they don’t have to go last in the free.

If nathan really did intend that fall then we have quite a mastermind here

You've got to be joking, right? I doubt anyone would be stupid enough to purposefully put themselves in a hole to have to try to play catch up all just because they didn't want to go last. That's the most ludicrous conspiracy theory I've ever heard. That aside, Nathan has just been dominant after the 2018 Olympics whether he has skated last or not. I'm pretty sure you're very wrong.

I'm quite sure Nathan didn't throw that fall in. He has been in the final FS position many, many times, most recently 2019 Worlds, GPF. He has no trouble with it and has actually commented he prefers the last position as it revs him up. Besides the fact that his fall obviously irritated the crap out of him!!!

It's really hilarious to see such comments one year later in view of the fact that Nathan skated the best SP in history and then skated last in the free at the Beijing Olympics.

I'm very interested to see how Nathan and Karen Chen will be received as Chinese Americans in Beijing. Especially since, aside from pairs, their medal chances seem quite low.

The US may boycott the Winter Olympics in Beijing. The atmosphere is brewing unfortunately.
@Essylte

I disagree. Nathan has proven himself to be a gold medal contender in Beijing 2022, while Jin Boyang showed that he could not deliver here where it mattered. Karen was obviously the right choice that USFS made to send to Worlds 2021, because she won them 3 spots for next year. The pandemic has disrupted everyone's lives, but with vaccine rollouts, there is hope for everyone that countries will finally be able to open their borders, and the skaters will have more time to really train like they usually would.

@@censoredyoutube4902...I'm so torn about that. It is a dream of athletes like Nathan to participate at the Olympics and win a gold, and he has plans to move on from skating soon so that he can go focus on his education. I REALLY, REALLY want him to win a gold before he leaves skating behind. BUT, at the same time...we're talking about abuses of human rights...so...UGH. I'm so freakin' torn. I seriously wish it wasn't China that'd won the right to host the 2022 Olympics * sighs *

@@divinearia1601 As an American citizen, I would put the US national security and the China human right concerns on top of everything else, Nathan's chance for Olympics gold included. The pandemic has taught us a lesson, a huge lesson! Stop overlooking the abusive power of an autocratic regime and stop giving that kind of regime all sorts of opportunities, be it commercial or hosting sport events. Without Olympics gold, Nathan has already proved himself one of the greatest figure skaters in the history, men, female, and pair all included. He's already established himself the reputation of an iconic figure. Olympics gold is just another decoration, a jewel on his crown.
