Nathan falling was a blessing. He's been stiff all season and like he was stressed out. The SP as well seemed like he had too much on his mind and went into the 4lz slow, but with the fall he just let go and actually showed what he could do without worrying (and you can see the progress he's made while working full time with Raf, that 4S entry!). Raf also seemed to imply the win streak could also have added to his stress. Now he knows he can make a mistake, better here than the OG, and it's not the end of the world. Men's event was fantastic in general. Loved seeing how happy Shoma is skating now, Keegan, Jason and Mikhail were also amazing and Yuzu's SP was so fun.

Thanks to magic Nathan, my love for figure skating was rekindled again after more than 20 years of hiatus. Now I've been going back to watch his predecessors and found some of them , Patrick Chan and Alexi Yagudi, e.g., were truly respectable icons. I also started to watch other events like ice dancing and pair. Not sure how many fans like me Nathan has brought into following figure skating again.

I think the discussion about if Yuzu can beat Nathan is past the point. He himself said it’s not about winning for him anymore. He’s won so much, why should he run after always winning if the odds definitely are not in his favour. He cannot turn back time and Nathan is so much younger it’s “natural” that someone younger will push you from the peak. And Yuzu has never resented that and was always just kind to his younger competitors because he values quality. He’s focused on his performance and especially doing that 4A... and I think it’s great. So when it comes to the Olympics, Yuzu knows that he won’t be able to beat a perfect Nathan, but Nathan’s not a machine as Yuzu isn’t one. It’s nice to have a bit of tension and excitement for the competition but I think it’s rather wise of Yuzu to end his career on his terms instead of hunting after a delusion of making beating Nathan his goal. It’s just everybody else who creates this discussion... it doesn’t really exist for the athletes themselves 🤣

@pennyinheaven
@pennyinheaven 3 года назад
I just wonder where this pushing each other up will end because Yuzu is in a different league of his own at this point. Maybe Nathan's the same, just working hard for his own and not exactly drawing the energy or inspiration from Yuzu. While Yuzu used to be like this towards Nathan but not anymore. So it's like Nathan is just left at the top. Kinda felt that this time. It's like Nathan poured his heart out to redeem his title and present his program as challenge and Yuzu was just cruising on his own. Yuma is a great contender but it will probably take more competitions to level with him.

How true, just think Shoma could be 3rd if he didn’t fall on 3A in SP which is his reliable jump. But his GOE on all his jumps are so low, as treatment he got with his PCS. What’s wrong with those judges? They are trying so hard to help Russian skater?
@Plaspos
@Plaspos 3 года назад
Freedom Life well shoma’s jump technique and landings are much worse than Yuzu, Nathan, Yuma, Mikhail, Boyang, Kevin, etc, so he shouldn’t be getting high GOEs. I thought the GOE on his 4F in the short was even very generous. PCS is another story, he obviously deserves high PCS but I did notice he does fewer transitions these days than 2017-2018 so that could be hurting his score

@@trylogic4084 Yuma can probably win in Milan but Nathan's still at an undefeatable position. If Yuma wants to win, he definitely needs to land at least four quads consistently, and I don't see him accomplishing all that within one season. But this is figure skating, who knows what will happen.

Don't forget that he had a stellar senior season - won two bronze medals at Nationals, won the gold at Lausanne 2020, won bronze at 4CC 2020, silver at JWC 2019, now silver at his first senior Worlds. Also, it's been said that Yuma is working on the 4F. I don't doubt he'll get this (and maybe even the 4Lo; he said that the Salchow and Loop are his favorite jumps) over the summer. Hanyu said he “is not aiming for a Gold at Beijing or winning at competitions anymore”. The sole purpose of his skating (I.e., his life?) now is to land 4A at a competition and if the Olympics happens on the way, people might see him compete in it, if he qualifies(!). He said he “had practiced nothing but 4A, no other jumps or programs”, after the JPN until 3 days before he left Japan for WC. (He was going to stop that in February and shift his focus on WC but he couldn’t stop himself. ) He has been practicing as if his “life depends on it” and won’t quit skating until he achieves that goal, because he “would regret for the rest of his life” if he didn’t. He also said it was his original intention to include a 4A in Ten to Chi to, and he will continue it on in the next season. It’s because of this that he “isn’t sure whether or not he will go back to Canada”. As his focus is purely on 4A and to include it in Ten to Chi to, he wants the freedom to use the rink and audio all to himself, which would be difficult at CC. However, he also recognises the huge burden on his body and the needs for professional support in maintaining his health. He also said his 4A is 1/8 rotation short now, and definitely feels the improvement as he spends more time on it, which is why he is continuing his efforts.

Todd is always respectful about Hanyu, he is great. I loved how he said he'd give +5 GOE on Hanyu's 4A even if the landing would be terrible. I could feel the excitement in his voice. Well Hanyu is so committed to doing the 4A that I believe he got it already and he just wants to be comfortable with it or make it a bit more perfect. He already wanted to bring the jump to Worlds, but we know he is extremely perfectionist. He wants to land it to his own satisfaction, which means very high quality. Records may be broken but landing the 4A would be something completely different, a world sensation, I say go for it Yuzu!

I think so too. He has built up his body over the pandemic. Completely different from last season. So yeah, I also think he has already landed it, one way or another. I'm thinking the struggle comes with consistency, entry/exists and incorporate it to the program with the rest of the jumps. Yuzu knows everything he has done upto this point will be overtaken by Nathan or anyone. But being the first one to land a jump in a competition will be his and only his. I hope he perfects it in Olympics and lands it during the program, whatever happens to the rest of his program and jumps. Then maybe retire there like how Javi did.

No offense intended, but I just find it so ironic that it's a jump that Yuzu and, in turn, his fans as well, have all become so obsessed with when there was always so much crying from them about jumps and quads in the first place. That aside, if this is Yuzu's goal, I say all the more power to him since he's achieved pretty much everything else already. Hope he finds whatever it is he's searching for. I love Yuzuru with all my heart lol, but Nathan is pretty much unbeatable. Even if Yuzuru was clean and matched his best FS score he'd have 318, closer but still 2 points less than Nathan, even with the SP mistake. Also, Yuzuru has typically been less consistent, he really should have 4 world titles. He might be coming to terms with not expecting to win against Nathan, so the 4A is a grand enough goal which he can aim for on his terms. I agree with Todd, I don't think you need to change the value of quads. At the end of the day figure skating is a sport. I think there is so much more room for improvement regarding judging, in the awarding of GOEs especially... imo all the +5 etc has done is help make things more convoluted. How you can get +GOEs for a hand down makes no sense. Why aren't we calling out perorations etc...

Medals and world records are easily taken and replaced by others. To make them define Yuzu's worth would be useless. So I think he wants 4A to be his legacy in the sport. Not having boards was convenient for getting out of the way of other dancers, but you did have to pay attention not to skate off the rink. I also think there is only one skating rink there, plus another ice surface for curling only. I'm a bit surprised that they haven't added another rink with all the training going on there now.

@@pennyinheaven I really hope he’ll go for the gold. But well he clearly prioritize the axel.

@@TheFlowMind If he's gonna go for the gold, his body might not allow it. He has to skate clean and have more quads to beat Nathan, which is not exactly impossible but he doesn't always have the stamina to do it. He's strengthening it (successfully during pandemic) but it can only be done to an extent and he intended it for 4A.

I love his idea of giving bonus points for major elements which were done for the first time. This encourages some risk taking and we don't want a system which penalizes risk. Which goes back to my support for Trusova, in spite of her 2 falls in the free.

Trusova’s horrific free shouldn’t have gotten her in the top 5, let alone on the podium. Justice for Kaori

@@user-gg9uu9kx9w we can't punish trusova for trying to do what Nathan has done. Why are female skaters punished for PCS when the men can land quads and have very little to no artistic elements.

@@Jeremy-wp4yh that’s the sad state of current FS judging system. It’ should called jump skating.

@@Jeremy-wp4yh then we should go back and give gold to Plushenko in Vancouver. He landed quad and lost.

Yuma's reaction was priceless! Dave called it last year when he said Yuma could win a world medal. I love Nathan and I would love for Hanyu to win a 3rd Olympic gold, but I think Yuma might steal it.

Todd! I remember rooting for him in the 90s, glad to see him here. He talked about the balance between TES and PCS and mentioned something about the possibility of lowering the value of a quad in order to help the balance between the two. Maybe instead of doing that they could increase the penalty for a fall? A quad flip is worth 11 points, skater falls, receives -5 GoE and the mandatory -1 point. The skater still earns 5 points, which is only .50 off of the value of a triple flip. Now, we have skaters falling on multiple quads, but still receiving blind credit for jumps they didn't even land. It just seems as if the reward for quads out-weighs the risk imo. Yes, this would affect triples as well, but at least falls would be more detrimental overall to a program like they were under a 6.0 system imo.

I would reweight components to 1.1 and 2.2 for men and keep quads the same. I think it could help to achieve the same objective.
