Nathan Klein’s Kentucky Derby Profile: Catalytic 

This was great. I didn't have too much info on Catalytic, but I will take a closer look now. IMO, the derby has pretty much turned into a 20 horse lottery, so might as well pick a longshot.

It's difficult for a closer to make up much ground on a fast horse like Fierceness who was out on a lone lead. The Derby will be much different with a good chance that Fierceness will be sandwiched and bumped at the start and then be trying to catch up to horses faster than any he's faced. He seems to get easily discouraged when bothered at the start. Closers will be trying to get around the final bend without losing a lot of ground but there will be so many more than usual in this Derby it will take luck not to be stopped or bumped the way Catching Freedom was in the stretch of the Risen Star by Sierra Leone. It seems that Catalytic has a faster turn of speed than the other closers so if he can get a good path without being stopped or having to go very wide, he could surprise. Going up the rail is risky but so many horses seem to go wide they leave it open for the occasional Mind That Bird or Rich Strike types. Catalytic seems to have the potential to take the inside route. Of course, to do that racing luck will be a key factor. Unfortunately, it is not a factor that is predictable. Nathan, what do you think will be the effect of a wet track on this field and Catalytic in particular? I like to think about such a possibility ahead of time in case it is rainy.

Can you do stronghold? Never worse than 2nd, ran 1 1/8 mile in 1:49.4 (second best out of the 20 Derby entries, Fierceness ran 1 1/8 in 1:48.1), bullet work 4f in 46.3. Thanks
