Neither the 1st Republic or the 1st French Empire had an anthem, Napoléon didn't ban any anthem (just minimize the risky ones) and yes "Le Chant du Départ" is a beautiful song that talk about the sacrifice for the motherland and liberty, but in fact the most used "anthem" under Napoléon was "Veillons au Salut de l'Empire" (when it was written, empire had the meaning of state)

It is if you know the history. While most anthems are just boring "my country is beautiful" "my country has [insert thing the country has]" "my country will always win at war" and such, the french anthem is a call for revolution, it actually has a message (and the music is great too).

Atleast France became a major European republic since the fall of the roman republic. "The conservative( old, traditional) monarchy was threatened by the liberal (new) republic of France."
