The building that housed the National Art Gallery was the Royal Palace of the Tsar of Bulgaria. Today, temporary exhibitions of Bulgarian and foreign art are exhibited in its halls. The palace was built immediately after the liberation of Bulgaria from Ottoman rule (1878).
