Satan Butte is a rock formation in Greasewood, Arizona, on the Navajo Nation. It is best known for spooky, paranormal events, but the Navajo name for this place reveals another history. Our guide is Mike James Sr., a retired educator and military veteran who has lived in the area since the 1960s. He has also been a conductor for the Native American Church (NAC) for decades: he knows where to find medicinal plants and abides by an old school philosophy regarding the purpose of medicine men. Thoughtful and measured, Mike provides important insights into what he views as a fading way of life. Join us as we get to know Mike at the base of Satan Butte.

When you gave a little laugh and said "that's a lot of information" I was just taking in Mr. James' story, as respect asks us to do , He was giving his story, his people's story, provenance, if you will. To not abuse our natural resources, take one, leave the rest for regeneration. Thank you

Thanks for your Navy service, Mike. You got out about the time I went in (1970-1974). I might have flown in one of the helicopters you worked on. I love the stories about the lives and spiritual beliefs of the people. It is important to listen to these stories and that is what Nick brings to all of us who want to listen. I was not born into your culture but I appreciate it nevertheless.

Thank you for posting. The old ways are good, and true. The medicine has been used on this continent for more than 10,000 years.. majority of people don't understand it and misuse and abuse it. It's not a a hallucinogen, not a drug, if you don't understand it, learn from a true source or stay away. There are many misunderstandings and opportunist who want to gain financially or in popularity from it. Don't be misled. This man speaks the humble truth...

Aoh' agreed! My late great grandfather was a Dine' medicine man and he encouraged us to hold onto living off of natural medicine and plants. The plants and land know of our intent before we touch the soil. Like Mr James stated The plants and wildlife are leaving. I'm sure they left because they don't have anyone containing the tradition. We noticed that in our area, we searched for healing sage but most are gone. Wild carrots are scarce but when we do find them, they are more dry than usual. Ahe' hee for your support and comment. 🤙🏾

Good to hear where people got their fireplaces from. I use to attend peyote gatherings. But lately people have been changing things. Mixing it up and whatever. Plus to many yanni folks around the fireplace nowadays.
