This is the final episode with Dr. Melvatha Chee--but this time we're not talking about Dine' Bizaad or the field of Linguistics. Melvatha's got some great stories to share that run the gamut between scary stories, the origins of burial traditions and ceremonies, and some fascinating stories about her family from the Long Walk era. Join me as Melvatha tells us a story (or two)--this is one you won't want to miss.

Lake Valley, NM was a hotspot for paranormal/UAP/UFO activity. My father's side of the family hails from there. My uncle had a terrible and frightening encounter with one. Apparently he was never the same after that. He was a true cowboy. Tough and strict, but fair. I never heard his side of his encounter because my father didn't tell me of this until after he (my uncle) passed away. It was a harrowing tale told to me by my father. I could only imagine how he would have told it through his first hand encounter.

@@nealnez7729 that's the best part of meeting our people all over the rez who have different stories or point of views of history. It's not a single point of view like we've all read in books by non-Dine'

Great information, I wish everyone could share thier information and knowledge of thier great grandparents story that they have of the long walk. Medicine man of the true original healing practice is hard to fine now. Now Medicine people, blame family members, coworkers and friends for the negativity in thier life, which starts conflicts among themselves . Thank for sharing your story.

After you have that ceremony, you are not allowed to go to funerals, it erases the ceremony that was done for you. That’s why traditional Navajos don’t attend funerals or go to cemeteries or touch deceased people’s property and some won’t hug the family members of the deceased. Can’t bury them in any red colors. Many don’t follow or refuse to understand what the old ones did. Grandparents would tell you not buy 2nd hand stuff or other people possessions bc “many white people sell their dead’s possessions”. If I remember correctly, they make tiny cuts at the openings of the clothing. No pregnant woman or children should be attending funerals bc “the dead will attach themselves to the young and innocent”

I agree with you to an extent. Experiencing higher Ed courses also help with critical thinking, constructive criticism & being introduced to readings that we wouldn't normally come across. It's up to individuals to obtain knowledge but to be introduced to new ideas, is a plus in my books. We appreciate your support and input, ahe' hee
