Nakoda and Plains Cree here. My mother was full Nakoda, and my dad is Plains Cree. As far back as I've been able to trace my ancestry, 100% Native on both sides so far.
For those not in the know, Nakoda = Assiniboine. For those who don't know who the Assiniboine are, they're a northern offshoot of the Sioux (Dakota) and the two became enemies. On the other hand, the Nakoda and Plains Cree are traditional allies and were the two most important members of the Iron Confederation. Have I got that about right?
In old times, my family taught me our people used a system called "coup." Its where, in war, a warrior would race into the opposing parties positions and instead of slaughtering each other, they would do what is called "counting coup." Its where they would touch an opposing warrior on the shoulder to signify that at any time they could have taken that life. Instead, after counting that coup, that warrior would be honoured for not only sparing a life, but also showing bravery in war.
I learnt this when I was a child, reading Sitting Bull biography. Later I learnt that the Chief called Two Coups, got his name because he used to touch twice the same enemy!
Nah, we still slaughtered each other. Those sioux, Cheyenne, and Arapaho all about exterminated the crow thats why they joined to fight the us army against said tribes.
In war, each warrior understood every man involved might have a family to go home to, so if violence was a necessary means to end the issue, then it was used. Otherwise counting coup was a means to spare the life so that man could go home to his family. He may have been defeated, but at least he lived and understood. My great great Grandfathers passed that along to my family who shared it with me. I'm a Nakoda Sioux and that is what I was taught.
oh ok, because i was under the impression that many native tribes, including the Comanches didnt give a rats ass about your "family". they killed and r*ped everything in sight without mercy.
Ania Koscka It's not pure. This was not a spiritual dance nor a dance of any meaning. These people were forced to dance for white men in wild west shows. That is a reason to tear up.
Warriors would dance the night before battle so not peaceful and warriors had a death song and dance. They also had a dance of purity yes and of plenty game. Notice how they are dancing with weapons
oh i c, very true. i noticed that they were only dancing in view of the camera and close together as well. Traditionaly they dance in a big cirlce with drummers in the middle.
I dont know why but I have this feeling since i was a child that native Americans is my people I'm mexican but i love everything about their culture and history. I've watched dances with wolves like 20 times and read books about native Americans. Idk just tought I would share
That too is true, about the walkabouts and sharing. Here in what is now the Los Angeles area, the Mojave Shoshone connected the Chumash and Tongva(or Tujunga)Peoples to the Utes and Paiutes of the Rockies.
This must be one of the earliest film clips ever! I am very interested in the Native American culture, recently I had the start of an idea for a Native American film. It's about an English girl from now who is visiting America on a college trip and she is somehow transported back in time before America had been discovered by Europeans. She meets a tribe, befriends them, learns the language and gives them a warning that her ancestors will come and that they have to escape.
Coryw31 keep on educating. Just because the ones who fail to understand, comment, takes nothing away from the truth you speak. Many hear & agree, without commenting. Like a rock tossed into a calm pool, who knows how far the ripples travel? Their lack of appreciation, takes nothing away from the good your words do, or from those who listen & appreciate. Thank you.
"Las voces de ayer que clamaron libertad contra la agresiòn del hombre blanco, sonaran mas fuerte, hasta convertirse en canto de guerra"....."La tierra es la vida, el bufalo es la vida, las praderas son la vida, los rios son la vida, el hombre blanco no piensa así por eso nos destruye".......gloria eterna a Toro Sentado, Nube Roja y Caballo Loco...!!!
This is not a dance of any true meaning, more like just a exploited show put on to entertain the palefaced ones. But it is interesting to see my ancestors in the late 1800s on video. Sad times, as this was taken not long after the end of the way of life and freedom we once had. This film was recorded only 4 years after the death of Chief Totanka Iyotanka also. I have to wonder if they were forced to do this dance for the camera man, or mistreated before and after there performance. Any real authentic sacred ritual dance of significants would not have been performed for the whitemans eyes to see. Also the whites feared it.
you sound familiar, I think I know you! anyway I'm glad this video is shown cuz at least there's something of them from that time & not a video of people going around "pretending" to be indigenous lol besides it was Columbus who called them Indian but I wonder what did they call themselves you know if the Lakota were speaking about a certain tribe I'm sure they didn't say oh those Indians over there I just wish there was an audio clip of them speaking in their own tribal languages that would be so awesome!
Ohitika Píško "Any real authentic sacred ritual dance of significants would not have been performed for the whitemans eyes to see." I was just rereading your statement & I want to know what exactly did you mean by that? I ask this because what you said can be applied to powwows today, where all people come & look at the dancers & observe them. So how do you feel about these dances being performed at powwows across the country for all to see?
Ohitika Píško now you got me curious...okay I'm sure you've gone to powwows or maybe not I did while I was away at uni & don't get me wrong it was a great cultural experience for me but it seemed as though I think you said it umm like a "forced" performance...I felt the dancers were being put on display a bit...now not all powwows are like that but my school was not the most integrated I should say but it's a feeling I got you know similar to what you said about the dancers in the video...but why are certain ceremonies/dances hidden?
Such a beautiful clear video! Thank you for sharing , Why is it that when there is a Bigfoot/ strange sighting the video is super blurry?! What brand is the camera taking this video ?
yes i can clarify that. His ppl were only allowed to perform these dances for commercial purposes. Native American ceremonies and languages had been banned by the government and many native ppl had been thrown prison and died there. Ppl like sitting bull did not have much choice. They were coerced into doing shows for Buffalo Bill. SittingBull was actually killed by by reservation police for supporting the Ghost Dance movement in 1890's.
It reminds me alot if the Australian aborigine dances. The way they turn the head. I wish I really wish I could see what a scalp dance looked like and get the atmosphere of it all.
A precious archive, yes critically assess the context of the footage, but no, do not criticise the ancestors whose images have been captured here. Careful - what goes around comes around. Only the blind cannot see how much more leaner and fitter these spirits are than the majority of the people I saw in america recently!
There WERE borders and boundaries in Native America, they were just more open and crossable.Euro-centric American governments(Mexico included)like drawing their own borderlines, however.
Native ppl were not allowed to own their own land either so they were not left with much finacial resources leaving them to be exploited. And TRUE, BuffaloBill was a good friend of the Native people's and experssed his concern for their well-being to the government. He urged the government to treat them well and stated that 'all of the wars the the indians fought was on their own land' for the sake of their ppl and not for greed.
So many concentrate on the superficialities of skin color and blood mix, that they often miss the culture aspect.I've been in on RU-vid conversations where some NA's were complaining of other NA's dancing their dances."Those Dineh were dancing an Arapahoe dance." Those Lakotah were dancing a Pawnee dance." There's more to this than red and white or Mexican and American.
it was a real dance and ur right about Buffalo Bill. Some natives were forced into this after being forced to surrender or they would face jail time. It is a true dance though, they still dance like that today. I've never seen it on film though, thats freakin crazy! that dance must be thousands of years old. Im amazed.
Our people LIVED according to the Sacred Teachings and Laws set forth by the Elders, so rape, murder, and pillaging didn't happen without consent of the War Chief and Elders; and only AFTER no other peaceful resolutions could have been reached! We didn't just march in (like some other races) and attack and desimate innocent women and children while they slept! We didn't kidnap children and force them to live our ways!
This might not be a true traditional dance, but how amazing to see true plains natives in breechcloth. Dancing so beautifully in such healthy strong lean bodies instead of hollywood where they are always dressed in full stereotypical regalia .They usually show elderly chiefs in movies and photographs. Rarely do they show young strong men in their prime.
There is only one option left in front of righteous American citizens to repent the terrible deeds committed by their ancestors, & that is to give complete independent to many recognised indian reservations such as lakota. I wish people of world and USA are more educated about this tyranny. Natives deserve the recognition what they didn't getting from the world.
@IllegalAmigo222 I said the majority of mayans, not all mayans. I remember the number being rediculously large, this came from my history prof. In places like barbadoes and some carribean islands, some indigenous groups were entirely wiped out. Major disease and germ warfare, superior tecnology, horses, psychological states, and already existing feuds in the indigenous, were the complexities that lead to massive eradication of indigenous populations.
King Of the south boy shut yo bitch ass up you act like us blacks can’t have Native in our blood . You act like the natives weren’t the same skin color as us and not the same skin colors as the natives today. It’s always somebody that hates because another person claims they are part native .
Yeah the native people would never sell out there way of worship back in the day. The Ghost dance is very old and was a way to worship they worshiped one God and had a structure of community and worship always came first. And they say we were hethens we knew of Jesus Christ and his teachings before any foreigners tried to re-invent him to us. The last shall be first, My father talked about "The ghost Dance" it was for that time only he said.
I remember Chief Dan George, another great guy.He didn't have a tomahawk with him when we met.He is dead now,but he lives on forever.I wonder what he is up to nowadays.
