"Mute" was enough to sell me on this album. This song has only sold me even more on it. This is exactly the type of music I've been looking for in metal.
Cynntu... these guys are getting it! Totally agree. Love the depth and fusion of sound. Love that there are a few bands making beautifully composed music that breaks skulls.
***** There are many variations of cancer and it is a common disease, nothing unique about it. If you're being edgy at least put some effort into it. Simpleton.
Is this music too avant-garde for people? The fact that anyone can dislike this song behooves the fuck outta me. It takes incredible skill to compose even half of this!
damn. i respect whatever career decisions these guys made, but it's a shame they stopped making music together. they would have changed prog metal forever.
Look up Sikth, Aliases, Protest the Hero, Journal, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Unexpect there are other bands out there that do this type of amazing material. Native Construct will always be special tho!
The chorus and main riff is very Haken-ish. They even reprise the chorus in a minor key just like in 'Atlas Stone'. Their major scale sounding moments are very reminescent of A.C.T, and the solo/instrumental section could fit in a BTBAM or DT song just right. Quite good, but in my opinion... not as unique as some people are stating. I guess I have to listen to the album in its entirety first, though. EDIT: I've listened to the whole thing like 20x times already. Pretty fuckin' amazing stuff. Prog AOTY material right here. BTBAM, Leprous and these guys are taking the cake this year for me.
dudes hand has an x on it. too young to even drink but they made literally one of, if not THE best prog metal albums of all time while studying at Berkeley MA. it's been over 6 years and this is still my favorite album of all time.
It is in fact 66,66, repeating of course, percent sweater. One is tempted to make a stale joke substituting sweater for a certain bell of the bovine type, but... eh.
Nice to see an 8 string guitar band using bass. Extended range guitars can hit notes as low as a bass, still can't replicate the chunkiness of a bass's tone.

elasdickband027 Don't think I've ever seen an 8 string band that doesn't use bass.
Adrian Ocaña Animals As Leaders don't. That's the main one I was thinking of.

elasdickband027 I'm pretty sure I remember hearing in an interview that they record bass for the album and play it through backing tracks for live shows. At least that was the case for their first album.
Adrian Ocaña Definitely not the case for TJOM. They actually had a bassist earlier in their career, but they don't know, pretty sure They just use the 8 strings for the bass register.

elasdickband027 Don't think they ever had a bassist. I watched them live when they were touring for the first album and they had no bassist, just backing tracks.
Roderick Peterson oh yeah? Then name any other prog metal band that has this much creativity and potential besides the gods BTBAM... Yeah thats what I thought. These guys are destined for greatness.
RogveStatvs "the Gods BTBAM" Oooookkkk, lol no. I like BTBAM, and I definitely think that Colours was a "game changing" album back in 2006, but now, they are far from "Gods". They haven't done anything really novel since then. Needless to say, I like them and I'm eager to listen to Coma Ecliptic. (...long post incoming...) What I'm going to state is basically my opinion, but you asked for it. Leprous, Exivious and The Contortionist... these are three bands that I think are really shaping Progressive Metal in an absolutely different way these days, different to any of the "supposedly" Prog Metal bands of the later years. If you gonna listen to them, take your time, and as with everything prog, open your mind... Leprous with their unique approach and proposal... a proof that a band doesn't need a thousand notes and difficult riffing to be complex, compelling and progressive. Add to that that they are original and don't sound like any of those pseudo-prog bands with overly ridiculous riffing and generic 'metalcore' kind of sound (ugh... "djent") or those cookie cutter bands that sound like old prog metal from the 90's. From the mixing to the composition, just Proggy ear-candy. The Contortionist's Language... while their two earlier albums were nice (although a bit too "coreish"), it wasn't until Language that they experimented a whole lot more... I mean, heavy ass riffing that goes along with post-rock atmospheres? They usually get lumped with shitty djent bands... but man, they don't sound like those bands and most definitely, they are doing things way different than simply chugging the 7th string. Listen to Intuition, speaks for itself. Exivious with their unique brand of jazz fusion-ish metal. Pushing forward the genre by being the first true real mix of 50% Jazz Fusion and 50% Metal. Those who thought that Cynic was the definitive crossover of Jazz and Metal can go fuck themselves (with all respect). Improvisation, fusion-ish chromatic playing, legato playing worth of Holdsworth praise... just so unique. (If you don't like these bands, fine, but if you don't think these bands are "unique", or different enough to be "reshaping the game", I would politely ask you to tell me to which bands they sound like) There are other bands that are definitely worth checking out (Haken, Disperse, Tesseract, Riverside, Corelia, Extol, Transatlantic, and a long etc...) that might not be changing the "game", but still have uniqueness going in them. I might have forgotten some bands, I know. Well..., changing the "game" is quite difficult these days, and I think that these guys (Native Construct) are really fuckin' good at what they do, but they still have a long way to go until they can show they are able to break some ground. What I've heard from them is stuff I have already heard before (quick example, they kinda sound like Haken in this song, same kind of chorus... they even reprise the chorus in another key, just like in Haken's Atlas Stone, while the verse has a very A.C.T happy sound, while the instrumental part speaks out loud BTBAM and Dream Theater)... maybe done differently, but still not worthy of a "These guys are reshaping the game." kind of comment. My two cents on the matter.
The whole water section, the oasis-like vibes are so breathtaking. It's my favorite section of the album. I just love it, especially that sort of water jug 'woop' sound. Damn. Can't praise it enough.
ikr? I love metal but im not emo guy, even when i listen to heavy scream types too. IT annoys me that people (even my friends who listen to techno, rap etc) think of 99% people listening to this kind of music as emos with little friends. And yeah, this song is a great thing and nobody will call me emo for listening to it LOL
I think that's quite an inaccurate statement. Have you listened to the latest two albums, for instance? Sure, DT have a bit of a structure that they follow rather closely, but each album has been quite different. Listen to the meta-album (Metropolis 2 -> Six Degrees -> Train of Thought -> Octavarium) in its entirety and tell me those albums sound extremely similar. Even Falling Into Infinity is vastly different than the two albums before it, and Awake has a much darker tone to it than Images and Words.
+Lucas S. G. Easily, the dots on the side of the neck better than inlays; more often than not inlays aren't visible when someone is playing unless you have those kinds of banana fingers. Also: practice. Get used to playing a certain way with a certain pick and it'll become second nature.
HerrStoneman Yeah, I suppose you're right. But I mean, come on, they're using 8-string guitars, how do you even hit the right note with those? Their skill is simply amazing.
Great arrangement! Great use of space. Solid guitar playing. Man, I wish those weren't programmed drums, though. Blast beats. Blast beats. Lot's of fills, all overly compressed with no dynamics. Ugh. Sorry. Drummer on a mission to keep real drums alive - and real drummers in work! Everything else is creatively fantastic, though.
I know this question probably gets asked a lot, but can anyone tell me what style/brand/type of finger pick Myles uses? I've been finding myself using my fingers a lot more recently in place of a pick (Not nearly in anyway like he does) and it would be so much comfortable to use one like him. I've searched around but can't quite find one like his. Peace.
So i went through the comment section and i found your comment, got excited for the breakdown, waited. Nothing happened. If thats what you think a breakdown is, you seriously need to explore Slam, Beatdown, Deathcore, and Metalcore more often and better. Lol
+TheNamelessYeti You seem very hung up on terminology. I was referring to the way, the song suddenly is allowed to breathe, how the staccato parts are broken down. Also, the genres you mention couldn't be further from Native Construct in terms of melodic lushness, compositional virtuosity and general ability to spark my interest. Enjoy your... breakdowns 😉
difquin Yeah, probably because this has cleans. Cleans are for pussies. Cleans appeal to a larger group, sorry, i mistook you for someome with an intelligent music taste. And no, the music is not left to breathe, the symphonics still go on, theres no open ended chug, good luck with that terminology. And honestly, these vocals ruin everything. Im surprised Anthony Barone is okay with this, considering he likes slams. Plus dude, this shit is written all over the place, which isnt bad, this is just done horribly. Theres even fucking blasting, what in the actual fuck. So to say that the stuff i listen to isnt as complex, is total ass fuckery, because this shit is easy on the drums and guitar, yet has no groove.
"Cleans are for pussies"? "...mistook you for someome with an intelligent music taste"? "total ass fuckery"? Wow. You really upped the ante on having a mature, unbiased and respectful discussion about music. [Unsubscribe].
I hope the 2 songs they've shown so far are the softest off the album. Im totally digging the experimentation but i could personally go for a slightly harder approach. What do u guys think?
It's not instrumental, they did a backing track for their playthrough. The original is not on youtube anymore. (which makes sense because the album has seven songs and that would be almost half the album on youtube before its out)
Got turned onto you guys by Seth Detrick of Weston Super Maim. I say this word a lot, but it doesn't mean it doesn't speak truth..... that word is fantastic. This is fantastic. I'd love to have you guys on my show. Great stuff!
Wow this is huge! I first heard you guys when Chromatic Aberration was uploaded some years ago. Was wondering if I'd ever hear any new music from you guys and then BAM! all of a sudden I see you on Metalblade Records. Well fuckin' deserved, guys. Keep makin' weird music, boys!
I am surprised nobody mentioned how video game like the guitar sections sound. It sounds like it is from Sonic/Legend of Zelda at points. Really good find.
I do appreciate their melodic and symphonic/theatrical tendency when composing…it's simply fucking awesome! I love this album and I do hope to see them live!
