Our friend at Native Roots & Shoots mentioned in the comments below the native Lily of the Valley which is Convallaria pseudomajalis. This would be a great alternative to the invasive that I have so many problems with! Thank you Native Roots & Shoots!

I love the way the yellows of Green and Gold and Golden Ragwort play off each other, and it makes it look cohesive. I love the texture of the sedges, too! I have ordered G.R. for my garden!!! Thanks for sharing from your real-life garden!

Hi Tiffany! Thank you so much! I still have green and gold blooming, it lasts forever! Enjoy the golden ragwort. If you put it in its favorite condition, it will spread like crazy. I love it!

Your videos are inspirational. I'd like to see a video about the caterpillars that use your plants, once they arrive this year, too!

OHHH! I am doing a facebook post about the a red spotted caterpillar that was visiting one of my wild cherries last week. I post in the community page too. You just gave me a great idea for a vide, thx!!!

I adore woodland phlox. I have three small patches but it’s on my “must expand” list this year. Anything that blooms blue/purple makes me swoon 💜

Hi Taylor - Here are some others to try if you haven't already...hoary skullcap, carolina petunia, great blue lobelia, tall bell flower, jacobs ladder, american wisteria and blue vervain.

Loved this tour! I love your passion for native plants. I have been steadily adding more natives to my yard/garden and trying to take out invasives along the way. I have a huge patch of green and gold and I'm thinking I'm going to start spreading it around a little more this year. Please keep making videos. I love watching!

Hi Thera! Thank you so much! Green and gold is an amazing green mulch! Def spread it around, it really can fill in spaces quickly.

I thoroughly enjoyed this little tour! I am about 4 years into my native plant journey and am learning from you! Today I wrote down "Chrysogonum virginianum" to look up more about!! Thank you! Your habitat is beautiful!!!

Thank you so much! I love green and gold and you can pop it around everywhere. It will really take off and give you more plants to spread in most locations especially medium soil in part shade. I did find that it def does not like full/full sun (technical term ;)).

I have bush honeysuckle, which I love because the fall color is amazing. It does spread by sucker and will make a thicket if you let it. Lori

Morning! That's exactly what I want....if I can keep the deer of of them. I grew those from seed and have been babying them in pots for a couple years. I hear they are short lived so hopefully they will start spreading around soon. I am looking forward to the area and having the bottlebrush grass gently swaying behind the northern bush honeysuckle.

Oh, no. I literally planted Japanese spurge two days ago! In front of my veggie garden. Should I move them to the woodland garden?
@ninetypercentnative
@ninetypercentnative Год назад
Hi Dawn! I feel bad giving this suggestion, but because Japanese pachysandra is invasive, I would remove it and get rid of it. It will likely end up banned to sell at some point. In my area it has escaped garden beds and it is completely covering the woodland floor and nothing else can grow. You wouldn't want to put it in the woodland. If you would like, shoot me an email, I would be happy to help you find alternatives! ninetypercentnative@gmail.com

Interestingly, there is a native lily of the valley. The non native ones are indeed a beast to eradicate. Still working on it. Violet!❤

Native ones are called Convallaria pseudomajalis. Read about it online at, “In Defense of Plants” article.

Morning! The non-natives spread so fast! That patch in the video I tried to smother with cardboard and like 9" of woodchip mulch. Didn't even phase them! I'll def check out the native. I think I may have planted some a few years back that didn't take, not 100% though. I am going to put your info to the top so people are aware.

Looks beautiful! Where did you get the Appalachian Springs Dogwood? I, too, had patches of my green & gold die last year. It seemed like the roots turned to mush, which made me suspect root rot or slugs. Let me know if you figured out what caused it.

Morning Robin! I will let you know if I find out. So far so good this year! I found the Appalachian Springs Dogwood at New Bloom Nursery.

Are the violets host plants for any caterpillars? I’ve been letting mine stay this year in my garden beds too!
@ninetypercentnative

Hi Grant! Yes, the def are! They are the host plant for the fritillary family of butterflies.

Hi Jane! I tried to dig some too when I planted the pignut hickory. It is soooooo entrenched in that area it is back breaking work. Removing seemed very similar to removing Japanese pachysandra. Do you find that to be the case as well? I have other patches that I pop out with a hori-hori knife but those areas aren't nearly as packed in.

I dug out lily of the valley no problem. Especially after a rain. I'd never use round up!

My biggest pet peeve is native enthusiasts whose front yards look like a Hot Mess. We'll never get the public to switch to natives if we plant a Hot Mess instead of designing a more formal look in our front yards.
@ninetypercentnative

Morning Heidi! Yes, I think it can def help by showing native gardens can look neat and tidy or formal.
