Joint press conference by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg with Ulf Kristersson, Prime Minister of Sweden, 6 June 2024.
🗣 | NATO Secretary General:
[speaking in Norwegian]
Let me say some word in English. First of all, I thank you for the good cooperation and good meetings we had today and yesterday. And, Sweden as a NATO Ally is contributing in many different ways to our shared security, to our collective defence. Sweden is an Ally that already spends 2% or even a bit more actually, of GDP on defence. You have well trained, well equipped forces, you have an advanced defence industry. So therefore, it is a great privilege to be here for the first time as Secretary General in NATO in Sweden as a full-fledged member.
Swedish membership also helps to strengthen our presence, not least in the Nordic, the High North and the Baltic region. And I welcome the announcement today that Sweden will contribute to NATO's Air Policing. This demonstrates how Sweden is making major contributions to our Alliance just three months after you joined.
We discussed the preparations for the upcoming NATO Summit in Washington.
More support will be one of the main topics, the most urgent task for the Alliance. And we are now working on how NATO can create a better and stronger framework for our support to Ukraine. So, we can play a bigger role in coordinating and providing security assistance and training for Ukraine. We're also addressing how we can provide and agree long term financial pledge for Ukraine. So, we have more predictability and more accountability. And also, that we send a clear message to Moscow that Moscow cannot wait us out in Ukraine. The [inaudible] is that the stronger our commitment is for Ukraine for long haul, the shorter, the sooner this war can end, because then Moscow, President Putin will understand that they cannot wait out NATO Allies and Ukraine.
We will also address at the Washington Summit how we can further strengthen our deterrence and defence to ensure that our new defence plans are fully operational and fully possible to execute. That means more investments and therefore I welcome that more and more Allies are now spending 2% of GDP on defence. But as we agreed at the last Summit in Vilnius last summer, 2% is a minimum to deliver on the NATO capability targets which Allies have agreed. Most Allies will need to spend more than 2% on defence to ensure that they meet those targets.
So, it is always a pleasure to visit Sweden. Again, a great pleasure to visit Sweden as a NATO Ally. Thank you.

Translations always are helpful for those of us who don't speak Swedish... just a suggestion.

Short summary 1. Lots of low substance political fluff you've already heard: - Sweden is safer because of NATO, NATO is stronger because of Sweden etc etc - NATO is strong and awesome - Today is Sweden's national day, the Swedish national anthem is freaking sick blah blah blah - Who else is stoked about Sweden, not just the Finns, being in NATO? whatevs... who cares? 2. JAS 39 Gripen is not being sent to Ukraine in the short term by request of the F-16 coalition but it's not excluded that it might be sent in the future. The two ASC 890 is better short term because it integrates flawlessly with F-16 3. Something vague about a new Swedish weapon which is unsophisticated but cheap and effective but they couldn't say anything more about it.

I agree with you. I am Swedish myself and I understand everything, but it should at least it be automatic AI-generated subtitles. English is the international language.

@@unitedstates907 every publisher of a youtube video they can include subtitles when they upload but they have to choose that option, its not by default, probably they forgot those working at NATO with youtube.

There is not a big difference between Norwegian and Swedish language I guess

Nope, not much difference. I love that Jens said he was at skansen singing swedish national anthem. It is a celebration of nordics and specifically mention our freedom. Thou ancient, thou free, thou mountainous North Thou quiet, thou joyful [and] fair! I greet thee, most beautiful land upon earth, /:Thy sun, Thy sky, Thy meadows green.:/

I'd say Norwegian is to Swedish what a thick Indian accent is to English; it just sounds ridiculous and totally unthreatening.

No, not a big difference between Swedish and Norwegian. We understand each other pretty well. It’s harder to understand Danish from a Swedish perspective than from a Norwegian one though. But even Danish is understandable in most cases. Same goes for Islandic. Only hardship that occurs is when facing our Finnish siblings. 😃

First, when Jens speaks Norwegian, the citizens of Sweden - and possibly other Scandinavian citizens indirectly through that. He says that he celebrated the Swedish National Day (June 6) in Stockholm and that he sang the national anthem of Sweden with full force; saying that the song, through its lyrics, is a celebration of the Nordics (through that implying that now the Nordic countries are brought together more through NATO). (Norwegians are bigger on celebrating the national day of their country, so speech has a lot of cultural references through its undertones.)
