When playing the piano, it's essential to feel naturalness and ease in your arm motions, through arm weight and weight transfer.
This video is about the concepts of arm weight and weight transfer as applied to piano technique. The video has three parts: first I explain the concept of weight transfer, then I demonstrate weight transfer in action, and I finish with some exercises to help you get started with weight transfer in your own playing.
This video is a follow-up video to my video on ARM WEIGHT. If you haven't seen it, you can go back and watch it here:

As a beginner, I think I will always have curiosity, doubts, questions, etc, about learning the piano (and music, of course). Music is a vast and surprising world. Beautiful too - no doubt. If I may, I would ask you to make a video about intervals. What is the best way to study them? Is it *really* indispensable to recognize them by ear - even chords? (This sounds as a torture to me...). Another topic of interest to me are the symbols on the score, especially the unusual ones. Unlike all the abbreviations, this information is almost impossible to be searched. Videos about scores (inclusive, in general) would be very wellcome to many people, I think. This is a rare subject here, as far as I know. Ah! rhythm... Still a ghost to frighten me, even when the sun is shining...:) Well, I hope I made myself understood (my mother tongue is Portuguese...). Your pdf, linked in the description of this video, is a wonderful tool for the development of our technique! Thank you very much!

Thank you so much, Dr. Boyd. Most piano teachers don't really teach technique but technique is the most essential thing in piano playing.

This is the BEST piano technique video series ever ... so incredibly helpful. I am learning piano myself at home and your videos are amazing Kate, you can not imagine how eye opening these instructions you are giving are for a self-thought aspiring pianists like me. I was practicing Hanon at the beginning of my learning journey and I had to drop it because I felt it is not right thing to do. I started learning roughly 8 month ago and I always felt a lot of tension, so for last three or four months I am searching for resources online that tackle proper piano technique and I can say there are not many out there. I am so happy I have stumbled upon your videos. One can not simply comprehend what all these different practice books trying to teach you without proper understanding of fundamentals of piano playing technique. You can bet without studying technique and body movement, you will just end up hurting yourself. Thank you, thank you so much for making this available!

I have tried many times to mimic this motion, but no one has ever explained and demonstrated it as well as you have in this video. When I saw your wrist drop to play finger 1 and lift while playing fingers 2,3,4, and 5, as in Hanon #1, it really started to make sense. I hope I am correct in this observation. Thank you so much for your explanation and demonstration!

There is a lot of similarity between this and some of Gyorgy Sandor's approach. Your presentation is clearer to me, but then again you take more time, and, for the most part, Sandor's information is only n book form (On Piano Playing). Any thoughts about that? Thanks so much. After almost 60 years of playing piano, I feel revitalized!!

I ‘d loved to see a video about repeated chords, as f.e. in Chopin’s prélude in E minor. How to get subtle control and how to use your fore-and upper arm for that. And of course fast repeated chords.

Thank you, Dr Boyd, for another great video! I'm still confused about a few things, though. Does the drop always correspond to an accent? Thus, if you chose to play Hanon #1 with accents on the 2nd and 6th 1/16, drop on 2 and 6 and hoist over the turn-around? Also, would you combine drop and hoist with forearm rotation (those 2-1-2 and 4-5-4 sequences seem such a natural place for it), or is that a conflicting movement which I should avoid?
@ThePianoProfKateBoyd
@ThePianoProfKateBoyd Год назад
Thanks for your questions! In response to the first question, the drop does correspond to an accent in that it will cause an accent, but not all accents in repertoire will be played by dropping. In response to your second question, when playing repertoire on the piano (as opposed to exercises) you will always be combining many different motions, so there will be places where you are dropping weight into the keys and also using rotation. That said, when practicing the "drop and hoist" motion in an exercise, I work on that alone, in order to master it regardless of the finger combinations and black/white key combinations, and practice rotation as a separate technical skill. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any more questions! 😊

Wonderful video! I must confess to being a bit sheepish about overdoing it with the wrist movement. Also, I I don’t seem to notice the integrity of the hand bridge at the bottom of the drop of the wrist; I realize the goal is not to linger there. I still do have the solid feeling in the fingertips though. Any advice would be welcome

Hey prof, great video. I wanted to ask since most of the time, the left hand plays the notes lighter than the right hand, I'm not able to use arm weight to play the left hand as I'm able to do with the right hand. I can feel the tension in the left as i try to play it lighter. An example piece would be Chopins Nocturne op. 9 no. 2. Can I play lighter but still use arm weight to do it?

I understand to release tension as soon a possible, but what about when there are Longley held chords in music? For example in alot of smooth jazz music I hold alot of chords for that smooth background sound

Just keep the keys down but don't press into the keys while you're holding them.

Just tried those hoist and drop exercises for the first time. Is it normal for my forearm to feel a little tired after doing those a few times? I check my arm after the release (like you suggested in your other video on arm weight) and it seems pretty loose and relaxed but afterwards it almost feels like a light workout.

What is the difference between Dohnányi and Hanon?
@ThePianoProfKateBoyd
@ThePianoProfKateBoyd 6 месяцев назад
They each composed a different set of exercises for learning the piano. Generally speaking, the Dohnányi goes over more advanced technical concepts, and the Hanon consists of finger exercises and scale patterns that would be accessible to students at earlier stages of their journey.
