This excerpt from the landmark film on piano technique demonstrates further core aspects of the pianist's hand in relation to the keyboard. The structure and function of the hand find a perfect marriage in an organization that simultaneously possesses both the secure stability of a cathedral arch and the moveability of unstable equilibrium. Just a quick response to set some things straight. First of all, this is not what Schumann did. He devised a method of "strengthening" the musculature (ligaments, more likely) in his fourth finger (right hand). This has little to do with strength and much more with "support" and "balance." The arch is the framework upon which the hand rests and works simultaneously. Cheers Alan!

What type of issues could arise in time due to improper hand arching? And what are the benefits of doing it appropriately?

That;s a question that has a very long answer - too long for a RU-vid comment! In short, tendonitis and carpal tunnel syndrome are the main physical dangers; and what you gain from a good arch is a healthy piano sound. In short, the more pronounced the arch, the richer the piano's voice. This is, of course, an over-generalization but there's a surprising amount of truth to it. Rubinstein is of course the best example. For more, please visit www.alanfraserinstitute.com/index.php

My 4 th finger is still weak..

Of course, a few tries will not magically make your fourth finger feel equal to all the others. Try to understand the logic behind what we’re saying, and begin to create a complex series of interventions that will gradually bring your fourth finger to more of a sense of equality. A short video cannot begin to address the complexity of the situation, it can only point you in the right direction.

That’s EXACTLY what Schumann did. He did it for different reasons than yours (he would lift little weights with his fingers through a system of pulleys), of course but the result will be the same, especially for people who do it unsupervised by a teacher - horrific injury. You have muscles in the forearm for a reason. How about lift your hand with them? Don’t you realize that you are trying to explain a STATE OF THE HAND but all people will see is a DEVICE to put your hand in the “correct” position?

You may be right. Sadly, although I take great pains to explain this clearly, some people will not get it. I guess there is always that risk with distance learning. So should I just not have presented this information at all?

@@PianoSomatics I understand both your explanation and what you are tryinh to achieve. maybe put some kind of disclaimer in the video description. In the end people always have a capacity to misunderstand 😃

Schumann also didn’t INTEND to injure himself.

@@Dimitar_Pentchev and if you listen to what I have to say, you will not injure yourself, you will play better. Schumann forced things mechanically; we are gently creating a richer sensation of hand skeletality and functionality.
