I like the "resting nice face" aspect of natural essence! I also always felt that natural essence gets a bad rap. To me, if ethereal is a lily and romantic is a rose, natural is a wheat field. Like that beautiful, Gladiator wheat field of the afterlife. It's absolutely gorgeous. It's warm and inviting and you just want to be there.

It's kind of weird to me that so many people reject natural as a type. Especially since the vast majority of supermodels are typed as naturals. Apart from that, the naturals are warm and inviting, and these are some awesome traits to have IMHO.

It's probably the language Kibbe used for the natural body type. Being "width dominant" for someone who doesn't understand what Kibbe means by width, is very triggering for some people.

I think it’s in part because on places like Reddit when people ask to be types and they have very moderate/ plain features they’re always typed as naturals

From what I see of it natural essence has body awareness, mental fluidity rather than being a sports person or the great tunic bare legs and boots, of years ago, even if legs are still great not the go with white hair. which is hard at 70 or 80. This is youthful as I see it not constricted and worrying. The flannel shirt etc is not defining it. I have always a youthful quality and it’s not gamine. It has classic with symmetry and beautiful fabrics and purity of line no florals etc. Wonderful video

Im a a soft natural and have natural essence, not sure what else I need to do more research. But this Christmas at a family get together I tried dressing in my lines, and my cousin was like you look like a model! I was so pleased I feel closer and closer to understanding this stuff the more I listen and read about it. Every essence is so beautiful to me I can’t really pick a favorite and it’s why I’ve fallen in love with this type of styling because it so subjective and you look at your body for what it is and not how to “correct” it.

Like, I need to be able to move and cross my legs and have relaxed posture. I also feel like natural essence people are the ones who can look really good in something that might look sloppy on other people, like a sweatsuit.

Oh my goodness! The work you put into this video is so phenomenal and much appreciated! I didn’t realize how much of a natural I was (and was almost outright rejecting the idea of it due to wanting to look more “polished” and “chic”) until you described the personality traits and ideal setting. Everyone throughout my life has called me sporty looking, friendly looking, relaxed, easy going… and I am the girl who enjoys a fresh loaf of baked bread and my only goal for my house is to be cozy 😂 so thank you for the deep dive and digging into the nitty gritty on all this. It has shown me so much! Now I have to go find my other essences , but accepting that my base is natural is all thanks to you! Also at some point I’d love to see you do a pregnancy/ postpartum outfit guide for the essences/ body types (no rush on it you’re doing saint’s work with these essences videos) I’m about to give birth to my first kid and it has been such a struggle to find clothes I feel confident in. I don't know if it would work, but It could be super interesting to look at these essences through the lens of Goth style since today there are so many different types of Goth... trad, whimsy, grunge, emo, victorian, punk, glam... I've been playing around with my style for some time now and find the softer, grunge and whimsy goth looks work better for me as much as I would love to rock a more dramatic look I tend to drown in it. This video is making me think I've got natural essence for sure, very enlightening!
@vampiric-elf5619

I need something like that too. I've been Goth my entire life, and it will always make up part of the fabric of my soul and my roots. But I do want to dress for my essence, too. I'm trying to dress in colours other than black these days but I still feel like in black I'm much more likely to be recognised by 'my tribe.' Though when I'm already amongst goths - at alternative music festivals, Goth meet ups, or Goth clubs, I actually love dressing in unexpected colours. Once I went to a Goth nightclub with pink hair and a white corset with a white maxi skirt. I got so many compliments.
@habituscraeftig

Hahahahaha. I am basically anti-natural. I love long flowing fabrics, but I have to be super careful, because anything too 'relaxed' (no matter the style) makes me look super sloppy. My sister and mom both have natural vibes, too, so it's what was modeled for me, growing up. It's kind of my cultural baseline, and it doesn't really work well for me unless I find some way to make it look *very* intentional. Very interesting.

i think that natural style is sooo in vogue right now also! lucky lucky for people of the essence or body type since they can absolutely rock the minimalist, athleisure and lots of the street wear that’s popular. it’s interesting considering today we’ve moved to much more casual wear as the norm vs the originating contexts of the systems when they had much more formal everyday clothes

Natural seems to have so many sub caregories and almost just feels like everyone who doesn't automatically stick to the others is placed there. Atheleisure, in my opinion, doesn't look better on anyone better than real clothing. Not to mention Beyoncé, a romantic through and through looked great in her own atheleisure line and there's nothing about her that connects to the natural.

The light on this video is just gorgeous! The sunlight going in and out seems perfect for the natural essence and its warmth 🤭 Thank you a lot for this well written and well thought video! I really appreciate you taking the time to do all this and I’m amazed that you seem to keep the same update rhythm… I think it’s something that should really be noted: this must take you so much effort and energy. I hope you know how good and helpful your work is. At first I was disappointed the natural essence didn’t have any shape because I felt it was the piece missing for me to understand fully this essence but the word relaxed makes so much sense and now it all clicked! I’m pretty sure I’m yang dominant and that it’s mostly natural essence (whatever I plan to wear I always end up with a laid-back version of the outfit). I do believe I also have a small scale essence too but gamine or ingenue? It’s hard for me to differentiate them even if I know the theory : my eye isn’t trained yet… Even if I’d love the gamine video to be the most thorough I love that your videos goes from most yin to most yang, so gamine next please 💌

Thank you so so much! This is such a kind and appreciated comment and it makes me happy to hear it's helping clarify the natural essence. I always worry I'm not posting enough but the videos are so long, and I don't want to break them up (so that's a relief to hear!). Yes, the word relaxed at first seems really ambiguous but I think once you really understand a relaxed feel in clothes (through different elements) it really helps you see if your HTT is working or veering to confining or somethings off. I do plan to go over the difference between gamine and ingenue in the gamine video- its a highly requested differentiation. The essence trait chart might help clarify some of the physical characteristics. But since gamine is playful yang, and ingenue is decorative yin, gamines tend to have more sharpness and be more spunky/quirky. Whereas ingenue tends to be more delicate/frilly/round- sometimes almost doll like. So in the same way one leans more yang (gamine) and one leans more yin (ingenue) they both exemplify that in clothes and features.

The more I watch these videos the less sense it makes to me. I get it as a general guide, but I always find myself disagreeing with so much (I don’t think puffy sleeves look silly on you at all!! I think they honestly give you more personality than the shirt you chose for the video) I really do think it’s all about what makes you comfortable and feel most you - of course sometimes we need help, in which case these systems are a nice guide, but generally speaking I think most of it is arbitrary. (Nothing against you, the video is great, more so purists)

As a soft dramatic with ethereal, dramatic, ingenue and romantic essence, I don’t think I have a drop of natural in me, but I’d love to look like that. I am not done with the vid though so I’m hoping I’m wrong. Sometimes I can look kind of relaxed in long draped verticals? I’m 5’7 and change. What's funny is that, these essences and IDs seem really obtuse and mysterious until you run across an example "in the wild." It was really eye-opening and she was really confident in who she was, too.

It's surprising that you defined Natural "common", but in Italy it's not so the perception of ourself changes with the country. I've been analyzed Soft Natural and it's rare here, people always say to me (and my sister): "you have very wide shoulder, you're athletic, you have muscle", even though I didn't train physically more than the others... so I grow up thinking that I was a little bit different. Girls are often D and pear shape, also C and R, but N... No. I should start feeling proud of it.

When I first worked out my Kibbe type, I used to say to myself that I was kind of cheating to Soft-Gamine, but that it was from some combination of cheeky taste and Romantic silhouettes just being really hard to find in stores at the time - at least in my size. But learning about the Kitchener essences has had me asking whether I have also actually instinctually been pulling back from a level of aesthetic maturity that felt overwhelming and self-serious on me. I'm pretty sure now that my essence home base is actually Ingenue-Gamine... +Something. Figuring out the Something has been an interesting puzzle, though. I'm over forty, but youthful vibes seem really right on me - up to a point. High femme is also really right - up to a point. There's something in the mix that pushes back on and leavens the femininity and the youthfulness. Romantic made some sense, given my Kibbe type and that I have quite pillowy (one could say lush) facial features. But for context: I am a bit of an uggo. Like, I'm not feeling sorry for myself or craving some kind of public consolation. I just think that I might have some features which might have been more prized in a different place or time, but that I'm also probably in a non-majority group of people that just wouldn't be considered ideal anywhere at any time. Like, literally any people that has ever been would look at my face and have some notes? (I still like being me, fwiw!) But while I'm fundamentally bothered by the idea of any beauty hierarchy among the Essences, so many of them are described mainly in terms of specifically attractive characteristics. I have literally been trying to figure out whether the Natural essence is the only available source that could explain a person like me being... visually wonky. (Obviously there are Natural Essence supermodels. Without question, there are many extremely beautiful Naturals. But if you're NOT quite pretty, is there room for that/explanation for that anywhere other than the Natural essence?) And I think what this video has helped me to work out, precisely by being so careful and so detailed, is the Natural is NOT in my Essence blend. The more specific you get about what the Natural means, the *less* it fits me, despite me being plain and ordinary in my... some-other-brand way. I think I do *use* the Natural in some outfits as a way of toning down/adding some of that seriousness while keeping the sensuousness of the Romantic essence out of the equation. This is partly lifestyle (as a teacher, it's my personal choice to keep my mature yin side kind of stashed away) but also maybe a little from anxiousness and insecurity. Like... I do have some fairly Romantic pieces in my wardrobe, and they are, in fact, really quite good. But modeling them for other people feels a little more high stakes than the more innocent and playful stuff? I don't really want to expose my style to comments from the internet, but I can't help but wonder if I would encounter some gate-keeping impulses. It can feel very audacious to claim that you have two fonts of youthfulness in your blend when you're also 40+ and look your age, and likewise to claim that you have both cute and sexy yin in your blend, when femininity itself has been so hard to separate, as a concept, from being beautiful in a consumable way. Like, how can I say I have both the cute and the sexy, if no one thinks I am either cute or sexy? This all still feels a bit transgressive to me, but all I know is: if you delete the Ingenue from my wardrobe it stops working for me. When the main series on each of the Essences is finished, it would mean so much to me if you'd consider a video comparing and contrasting plus-size celebrities and/or using famous women who are not famous for beauty. It makes all the sense in the world to use celebrity images for this kind of project. They're familiar and available and seem more fair to comment on. But sometimes my brain just slides off one exceptionally beautiful (expensively styled) face after another, and I struggle to see myself in any of them. I hugely appreciate that you've included plus size examples from the very beginning and obviously do not treat them all alike! Thank you for that! But I think there might be a lot more I could learn from a video that goes even deeper

I was wavering between Dramatic and FN for Kibbe, because I knew I had traits of both, particularly in my face. However I realized Dramatic with natural essence makes a lot of sense, more than Natural with Dramatic essence. Thanks for describing this type in a positive way because it's really not fair how people are mean to Naturals, they tend to be sooo beautiful!

Girl, you’re throwing me for a loop with this. I’ve never considered natural essence for myself because I associate it with being classic, which I am not. I came here to learn more about it after sharing my photos in a typing group. (Currently narrowing down where I fit between the Romantics and Gamine or Ingenue.) HOWEVER, your keyword of RELAXED may just have brought some things into sharp focus for me. I can see that that concept likely underpins my entire current wardrobe. Which is blowing my mind. Despite my likely being a theatrical romantic, I hate waist definition or any tightness around my stomach in almost any outfit. My favorite item in my wardrobe is actually a fleece open kerchief sweater that I literally wear every day (and have for years). So much of my taste would make more sense if I had natural being foundational beneath my other essences.

I didnt think I have natural essence blend until I post some photos in Facebook groups... everyone had different ideas, but natural was present in each one! I did think "but I look horrible in boho style " hahaha But I really look great in unformal outfits... i can't go totally N , still. But very formal outfits, as well as heavy make up, looks really strange on me!

The Natural has the best style, but I'm too short, non-physical, and introverted to be one. I don't do "homesteading" in any form, not even gardening. I took Library Science in the 8th grade to get OUT of Home Economics. 🙂 Which essence would include the nerd who would rather read cozy mysteries, drink coffee, watch science fiction, and think about life, the universe and everything, doing so in comfy clothes? Edit: I made this comment early on in the video. Yes, short little me is a Natural. Whew! I feel most at home with this essence. I may have a Classic secondary, because my go-to outfit in high school was an untucked Oxford shirt, open at the collar, over a pair of flare jeans and sneakers. A faux silver and turquoise owl pendant finished the look. I sometimes think I had a better idea of who I was stylistically before I fell down the rabbit hole of color and style analysis.

I definitely see megan markle as classic-romantic-natural essence. I never thought about her essence before this moment, but that is also my top 3 essence combination. Her and I have similar vibes communicated via the face, with mine being a bit more yin. I think I have high percentages of both classic and romantic (maybe each 40%), with a smaller amouint of natural (20%). She seems to be primarily classic (60%) with a balance of romantic (20%) and natural (20%) to me. Of course, I'm making these percentages up... but hopefully it translates, haha.

We appreciate the care that you take in fully exploring what makes each essence beautiful. In terms of features that help to guide the process, there are two that I don’t hear style analysts talk about: ears and teeth. While they both can really affect things like our smiles, whole facial shape, how we style our hair, etc. they don’t seem to get the attention that eyes/nose/lips do. Have Kibbe or Kitchener addressed these kinds of features? Either way, given how important the smile is to a natural essence what do you think?
@Gabriellearrudadesign
@Gabriellearrudadesign Год назад
I haven't seen a lot of reference information that addresses teeth or ear shapes- but I can see their importance. But also any individual feature needs to be taken into more holistically either way. So even if you have a gap in your teeth (which might lean more natural like on Lauren Hutton, it could also lean more ingenue on someone like Anna Paquin).

So I just found your channel the other day. Decided to watch each see dive video on the different essences, after watching an overview video I had an idea but wasn’t positive. I can’t believe how exact these descriptions define me and I’m realizing I always associated this type of clothing with being sloppy looking because that’s how I was raised and so I’ve always dressed more casual and felt badly when I dressed more comfy/casual. Like that was maybe ok at home but not ok to go out in. Now watching this I’m going ok but these relaxed styles look good on me, I also think I am a flamboyant natural so it seems like the two fit together very nicely. Funny how we can have biases about certain types of clothing/ looks!

I would say not super important- its not personality really but behavior mannerisms they mention (like walk). Some traits might lead to a personality trait but looking outside of the fashion perspective, personality is so much more complex and is so dependent on development, nurture, and nature. So, it would be unreasonable to box a style essence with a definitive personality. I relate to your description as well, I may seem extroverted in videos but really it's just because I'm filming in a room by myself, and in the real world I'm much more shy/reserved. I'd personally view it more holistically and not stress if the behavior or personality doesn't align.

Can we discuss how much "natural/hippie/boho/western" is appropriated from Indigenous cultures? It's pretty annoying how white ppl (No, I'm not referring to Thea Porter) get all of the credit for fashions that were around for centuries before "America" ever existed. Hippies were considered "fashion revolutionist" for the "earthy attire" inspired (appropriated) significantly by Indigenous ppls traditional garments while we were being unalived for it. IJS ....

As for me, I thin I definitely have classic and natural, in this order, and then something between gamine and ingenue in textures/prints/details that I can use in touches to make the outfits lean more into my yin features (I have a baby face, still at 36. I think I read that ingenue or gamine don't work after 20 but romantic lines look way too fussy on me). I do think I can pull off some grungy touches (was my favourite style in my teens) but mixed with more classic/small scale yin pieces. I keep being told I have a Natural essence in my blend (not as the first one) and also simultaneously told that I should avoid all loose fitting styles as they look sloppy on me and make me disappear behind the fabrics - the effect being very similar to Sofia Vergara there 😂😂 I mean, I didn't used to be as easy-going and friendly as I am now, so perhaps that change gives an essence influence that I don't have as naturally? Or maybe it's just a small percentage (i'm still at the first 15min of the video) so that's why most Natural styling doesn't work.

The problem with the descriptions and style inspo for naturals is the following: They don't fit a realistic lifestyle for most people! Most people dress for these things: work, dating, special events and homewear. Yes, sweatpants, boho style, huge chunky sweaters are good for the last one, but it ignores the most imoortant ones. Most people don't need style inspo to dress comfortable in their free time. Safari style, animal prints, etc. are so far removed from most people's realities. If some of these videos include how to dress professional, sexy, then I will be satisfied.
