I love wood! Nice job Jordan! Thanks for sharing how you made it. See you in PA.

You can put some dust in the holes and then put super glue on and sand over top it fills holes fast. Probably got harder as you went along in part because you removed the soft punky stuff and got down to more solid old wood, common for particularly Oak to be very soft in sapwood then like an old nail inside. Have fun.

In fact, any slingshot can be easy to shoot and accurate, except the Axiom Champ. But there's not a single RU-vidr who dares to say it... they all want to be sponsored by SimpleShot.

Natties with only hand tools is my thing. Some tips for those who want to make one. Some woods like to crack more than others while they dry (I'm looking at you cherry. A total crackhead ROFL) Some wood glue or paint on the end grain slows down the drying process and takes care of cracking. You just have to wait a bit longer before breaking out the tools. With overly fat branches you typically rip cut one or both sides lengthwise to reduce it down. Save your two offcuts and glue them together. You get a second fork and no pith to worry about. No pith means you have a lot more options for final shape. It's essentially primitive plywood, strong, light and you get to keep any cool grain patterns or spalting on the exterior. Handsaws and rasps like to slip. You will become an expert at the ouchy dance if you run either one across your knuckles. Gloves at least, preferably a bench vice or both is definitely recommended. Have a great day all. 👍

They came out beautiful. I'm also making to Auto Mesquite tree but is taking me long time I'm doing it with a cheer Rock knife. But I notice mine has termites in them. Now that I call would you do to make it hard maybe I can use it to. And fill it up with glue. Thanks for your video

Great job on that Jordan, I really love that 2nd little natty, great job on it also. You do know there's a better product for hardening wood right ? ( that little blue pill will fix your wood right up, LOL ) 😂

Very interesting work. I am wondering if you may have been better of to do most of your shaping before you hardened it. Some of those deeper imperfections can be filled with Medium CA if you spray some of the accelerator in and around that area and then fill in the hole or gouge with CA. The accelerator holds the CA in one place and fills the gap. I learned this trick from a friend who was one of the first people to use CA on model airplanes.

definitely try that next time! I did it the opposite way because the wood was just crumbling too easily and I though I may start taking too much material off

What are some alternatives to wood hardener?
@TheSmoShow1
@TheSmoShow1 Год назад
Super glue or epoxy resin work great, but they won't get as deep into the wood.

There is also Cactus Juice, but it’s expensive and requires a vacuum chamber, vacuum pump to pull the juice into every pore and you bake it afterwards to harden.

Great vid. They both came out great. Do you need to put the hard coatings like the superglue on it. Reason I’m asking, I just carved one and sanded it, but finished just with some Old English furniture oil. Do I need to do something different to finish it?
@TheSmoShow1
@TheSmoShow1 Год назад
No, if the wood is structurally sound you'll be fine with a good old oil bath. The CA or epoxy just provide an extra layer of protection and a marvelous gloss. But many people do not like the plastic-y feel, so they opt for tung oil, linseed oil, or some other type of protective coating. Wood is sensitive to moisture and will expand and contract quite a bit if exposed to humidity. Oiling or coating with something protective helps to keep the wood in good shape.

@@TheSmoShow1 thank you for the speedy response. I’m new to the slingshot scene and trying to catch up from the old wrist rocket as a kid goofing around. One of your other pics from Instagram inspired me to try my hand at making one out of wood.

@@robertdiehlbob4917 Bob, that’s great you’re experiencing how wonderful slingshots are, but more importantly the joy of building your own from natural tree forks….best thing going IMHO If you’re not already on them , consider joining The Slingshot Forum and The Slingshot Community…..loads of great folks on each that can really help and guide you. I’m on both under SLING- N-SHOT……love to have you join up. 🤙😁🇺🇸
