I have both of those. I love the Curl Maker because I don't have to mix it with another gel to get the definition I want and to maintain the definition. I like the Curly Magic, but it doesn't have enough hold for me. I mix it with Wetline Gel and it works great after that. The only thing with the Curl Maker is that you have to use it with a light to medium leave-in. I have high porosity hair and if I use it with a heavy moisturizer, my hair is either mushy or I get flaking. The Curl Maker works great with the Moisture milk from that line or Oyinhandmade Hair Dew. The moisture milk is medium weight and the hair dew is light weight. I can use just about anything with the Curly Magic/Wetline mixture. I have 4ab high porosity hair as a reference.
Lol. I feel you on the "mushy" hair thing. I have the same problem depending on what products I use. I have mostly 3c, high porosity, fine hair so I must have hold when it comes to certain styles like a wash n go. I'm going to try the wetline gel mixed with the Curling Jelly by As I Am. It's just like the Curl Maker but I like it better because it has a better smell to me and elongates curls plus defines them really well. If you haven't tried it, you might like it.
Would you mind doing one on two different like twist & hold type of creams ? I've been having a hell of a time finding a cream or something for my twist outs .
I love the structure and thoroughness of this video. You listed all of the ingredients and even explained what some of the more verbose ones do, and I don't think I've seen any other hair RU-vidr do that. Great work!
I prefer the UFD. The key to getting the same hold that you get with the CRN is to add just a little of another gel on top of the UFD. Eco Styler or whatever you prefer. That seems counterproductive, but even doing that, I like the results I get doing that way more than the CRN. I get ZERO frizz with UF. 3C/4A curls over here.
I use uncle funky's for updo and massive puffs. I go heavy with it and it does hold hard. I don't break the seal so it lasts a few days longer. I don't mind crunchy first day hair. A hair hold means less frizz and tangles for me.
I have both gels and I love them both! For me the Curl maker is more moisturizing. They both give me about the same definition when I use the same leave-in or cream underneath them. The UFD gives me less shrinkage and more volume. The Curl Maker gives me a longer-lasting wash-n-go. TFS! Great video! (SN:at my Target the Curl Maker is $5 cheaper than the Curly Magic)
Uncle Funky's Daughter gives you more product for less money so that's awesome. But my main goal in a gel is for shine and FIRM hold so I'm going to have to spend that little extra money and go with the Curl Maker. I've been trying to define my curls forever and can't seem to do it right with Eco Styler so hopefully the Curl Maker gets the job done.
I agree with you 100%. I used to be committed to CRN but after trying UFD I find I like the volume, movement and cheaper price better. Both are good products but there is no reason to spend more if you can get your hands on UFD.
Wow. I noticed in the use of the Curly Magic on my hair I get more definition and just a better appearance than the use of Curl Maker. I have 3c (top of my head) and 4c (back of my head). However, I do use a leave-in with both products. So this may account for the difference.
Omg I think we are hair twins! Shape, length, and the way the different textures are placed around the head! I love your comparison videos for this reason PLUS you review so many gels that are on my to-try list. Thank you, great job! 🙏🏾😊
Thanks so much that was really helpful, I wish more product comparisons were available vs. Single product only videos, this made the differences much more clear
tequilashots875 How are you going to determine her hair type? She said she is a 4a around the crown, therefore she is a 3c/4a. She knows her hair type and curl pattern. No one has the same hair type all the way around.
tequilashots875 I'm seeing some 4A and she would know. It's her hair. Mine is similar mostly 3C except for one back section which is 4A and 3B in the nape area.
M. Elle I totally agree that she should know her hair and I do see some 4A but there ARE indeed people with one hair type all over. I'm mostly 3C with some 4A and 3B; however my mother is 4A all over and my best friend is 4C all over. Just pointing that out.
Awesome video, thank you for that! Side note, I love your voice/accent :) You sound like Julia Roberts, I love it! Where are you from if you don't mind answering?
I loved this video! Thank you. Can we put in requests? LOL! :D I'd like to see Mielle Organics Honey & Ginger Styling Gel compared with Kinky Curly Curling Custard.
Those are the 2 comparisons I'd like to see, too. I love KC Curling Custard - my staple. But, I just ordered the Mielle's and wondering if it will work as great (my hair loves honey based products).
I have and love both gels, but I prefer the Curly Magic. The reason I prefer UFD over the Curl Maker has little to do with performance and more to do with tiny things with the Curl Maker that just irk me. I hate the smell of the Curl Maker gel. I know it's very light, and you can't smell it once it dries, but I HATE it! It has this sour grapefruit twang to it that I ever so slightly catch random whiffs of and it drives me nuts. The curl maker also breaks out the skin on my cheeks from my hair touching them before my hair dries. I love the performance of the Curl Maker, but UFD performs on my hair just as well; the hold is barely a tad lighter and I don't have to put up with that irritating twang and a possible acne breakout. UFD Curly Magic is the winner for me and its cheaper!
Great informative video. I love the results you got with the Curl Maker but I just can't justify spending $22 on such a small bottle of gel. I have way too much hair Lol
silkiilocks if you are buying that product from Target then try different ones because I have two in my area one has it for $22, but the other one sells it for $11
I feel the same way, omg! But I bought it yesterday and realized that a little goes a really long way since it has so much slip so it actually does last me a pretty long time.
I felt like you smoothed our the front Camille Rose side more then when you got to that Uncle Funky’s Daughter front side. I use Uncle Funky’s Daughter but on my hair it doesn’t come out as puffy as it did on you. It’s slick, shiny, defined and elongated. My favorite gel. For you though the Camille Rose side was definitely more shiny and defined. Camille Rose shranked my curls too much. I do prefer these types of gels though. Eco stylers and Wetline are too thick for me. I’ve discovered mixing stylers. I now prefer custards and gels together. Takes away the crunch but still keep the definition I want and it holds all week.
There's definitely a significant difference. Needless to say, both are great products and define my hair well and are both worth a try. Thanks so much for watching! :)
I'm a latecomer, but I love your videos. They're well done and you and your hair are beautiful! My vote: the CRN side looks more defined, more moisturized and shinier.
I am on day 3 of a wash and go with just oil and the Ufd gel. my roots are frizzy but the ends are still defined and I have lots of bounce and shine in my hair. I don't remember as much bounce when I used curl maker in past
I use the CRN Curl Maker for my type 3b/3c short tapered twa and I love the hold it has. Especially since my hair needs to be restyled more often now that it's shorter and I lay on it. With this gel, I can go a good 4 days without cowashing or shampooing to restyle
I'm a curly magic girl myself but Camille Rose gave you better definition. On my hair the Camille Rose was extremely hard. The definition was great but I couldn't with the helmet head. 😄
Great video!! someone else compared Camille Rose with ecostyler gel flaxseed gel and she said that Camille Rose was the better option. I guess CR has most of the gels on lock lol
I like the curl maker side it more defined and shiny. I can see the frizz with the uncle funky. Only makes me wonder how long it will last. I think Camille Rose would win that category. I need hold in my life unless as you say it's a event I'm going to and I only need my hair to look good for that day. I used the uncle funky daughter the application was comparable to Camille even the initial look but as it dried my hair looked dry and dull I will give it a try again. I do love your videos though very informative!
gosh thank you ash for doing the comparison!!!! I REALLY like both, so it's still hard for me lol i think I'll stick with CRN but then again, I think I'll just get UFD for different looks ,
I love the Uncle Funky's Daughter Curly Magic! I've never used the Camille Rose Curl Maker though, but after watching your video I think I'm going to give it a try. I loved the results of both, and we have the same hair type, 3c around the perimeter, and 4a in the middle 😌. Great video 💛!
This is an awesome video! I've always been curious about the UFD compared to other gels. I normally use the Camille rose or miss Jessie's coily custard. CR during the colder months because it has no glycerin and the MJ is my summer staple because it's high with glycerin. Overall I prefer the MJ custard.
I just stared using curl magic yesterday and omg !! the definition i get is AMAZING! Just so you ladies know, ufd is $15 at target. curl maker i think is 22-25. so ufd is cheaper a little.
I love curly magic. I have fine, type 2C hair with mixed porosity. I've been using the cg method for 3 months and curly magic is my favorite gel I've used so far. I use it on soaking wet hair and get good clumps. I live in the desert and have protein sensitive hair so I love that there are no humectants and no protein - hard to find. The smell is soooo nice. I love to use it over Oyin Hair Dew!
Hey, I have 2c hair too and I wonder which one should I buy, did the Curly Magic make your hair curler and have you shrinkage? I'm looking for a glycerin free product that would give me the same shrinkage as Moptop Custard...
Great video...I am the same. I love UFD Curly Magic but recently tried CRN Curl Maker...they are both my favorite. As long as I have 1 or the other in my cabinet...I'm good.
Loved this review; thanks for sharing. My hair texture is just like yours wet with no product. I'm not sure of your porosity, but I think I might have to try both to see if either one works out to my liking. KCCC and Mielle Organics didn't give me much definition and barely any hold, so since these sound promising I'll give both a try and see.
I remember back when you had the red hair doing the singling method (that video made me try it too) and I remember when you cut your hair. It came back just a strong and beautiful, love your hair & great video!!
Awww yes! That was one of my first videos. You must be a day one subbie. Thanks so much for your support and good vibes. So glad you enjoyed this video. :)
Yes I am, I actually just resubbed on this channel because the other channel I had I accidentally deleted and had to find all my subscriptions again lol.
I wanted to like the Camille rose but my hair did not lije it. It felt like my hair never dried, it was a weird feeling. Not a fan of the smell either. Just got uncle funky today. Going to try it for the first time. Finger crossed.
I got the curl magic when I couldn't find curl maker. I like it cause I can just wet my hair and twist after my wash and go and get the best twist out. It has okay definition for wash go but I don't think it would work for me when it grows longer I just got my hairbrush tapered a month ago. If I had longer hair it would be kinda gunky
Finally found my hair twin For years I thought I had heat damage due to different texture. When I first went natural I big chopped the perimeter twice cause I thought I had missed those spots smh lol
I think we have a similar hair type. Mine is 3c in the front and back and around the sides and in the crown 4a as well. I'll definetly be trying these products and subscribing. It's awesome to see someone with a similar hair type as mine. I love my hair, but sometimes the shrinkage gets annoying. Our coily hair can be so long but it only goes so far without stretching it. Any tips? I've tried the pineapple but I get less definition.
Do you still use the Uncle funkys daughter curly magic??? I just ordered the curly magic based off of your review. I've been using the Curl Maker for years and I just wanted to try something new.
Great video! Have you ever used the Curling Jelly by As I Am? The consistency is the same but it elongates curls, defines them, and has a better smell in comparison to the Curl Maker in my opinion. I would love for you to do a review of it and compare it to the two products in this video if you can and are interested.
I have the uncle funkys and looove the moisture and definition it give. But it feels so sticky after it dries. Does the Curl Maker dry sticky too? I'd appreciate anyone's opinion :)
