As a black man. Im so happy our women are embracing the natural hair and beauty. I grew up in a household full of females and was the only male. I used tell my sister stop doing perms, relaxers, weave glue, etc. They would ignore and I thought they were stupid. At the time I didnt understand the society pressures to fit in this European Standard of beauty with straight hair.
Erica M True. An additional issue is black women tend to not know how to take care of thier because thier mothers didnt know or care to teach them. A lot of black women have been conditioned to just deal with perms and weave.
@Elyse George= Please Don't Blame Me.... but the Cosmetology school system... I've Been a Stylist for 13 Years now. When I was in Cosmetology School they DIDN'T teach me anything about Black or Ethnic Hair. For almost 2 years I studied the theory of hair to prepare for the certification test to become a licensed Minnesota State Cosmetologist. My class spent over 1000 hours washing, cutting, coloring, setting, perming, relaxing, straightening, finger waving, pin curling, and blowing out white manikins. My instructors, were whites as well, with a straight Hair. I'm a Black African immigrant originally from Ethiopia. I struggled with my own hair after coming to the US for many years, My Natural hair type is 3-C 4-A and I used Relaxers, straightener & color for many years. I didn't stop using relaxers until seven years ago....even after I stopped getting relaxers, I didn't know how to care for my Natural hair and I straightened my hair every week. ..constantly exposed to heat...I was Addicted to My Flat Iron and It Almost Cost Me My Hair.....While I hadn't chemically treated my hair in years, my hair was still damaged from using constant hair straightener. I had to learn how to style and take care of my hair all over again. Last year, I made the decision to go the entire year heat free. No flat irons, curling irons, blow dryers, nothing. It was a huge step for me, These days, my curls look better than they ever have. They still never full recovered from the years and years of heat and chemical damage, so my hair is much thinner and shorter than the glory days I remember as a kid. But it's healthy, and I'm hoping that as I continue to take care of it, some of that length and thickness will come back. If it doesn't, that's also fine. Because now I'm healthier, too -

Being multiracial (Half white half black) ive never actually been taught the proper ways to care for my curls resulting in me resenting the texture of my hair. Now at 24 years old i am FINALLY learning to love me naturally. Thank god for people like you proving that curly/kinky hair is "good hair" too, all it needs is a little love and the proper regime.

Love this video. I had long thick hair and never appreciated it (perms, weaves, dyes, etc) and when I started to realize how blessed I was it was too late. Genetics kicked in and my hair started thinning. Ladies, appreciate the gift and take good care of it for those of us who are now forced to wear wigs and weaves. You can fight lazy but can't flip the script on the genes you get. I had only hoped it would skip my generation.
Yes!! Healthy + beautiful hair & a lovely young lady!! I'm so glad you stuck with the protective styles, trimming the ends, deep conditioning & not using a lot of products. My hair is now an inch past the shoulders & I LOVE the freedom of walking in the rain, not worrying about sweating for a workout & letting the wind blow thru it. Sometimes, I will still throw on a wig or bun but that is like every so often. We definitely can grow long, healthy curls with a little patience. A press & curl done is ok for special occasions. But, if done every week, just like a perm, the heat damage will dry out the hair or destroy the curl pattern. It's exhilarating, isnt it -- to love & respect your natural hair??! Congrats on reaching your goal of tailbone length, BEAUTIFUL hair!!

YES MA'AM!! This really brightened my day. I just recently cut all my damaged ends off after going blonde. My hair was to my hip and I want it back desperately. But I'm still glad I cut it off. Had to let that hurt go.
It is going well...I am year 4 and my hair is mid back/ waist length. Using Ayurveda herbs and my hair is thicker and longer that it have even been in my entire life....next goal is tailbone length which I believe I can achieve...

You’re so positive and very uplifting. I’ve started my natural hair journey TWICE now. It’s so hard for me to stay away from bleach 😔 but I really want to grow my hair this time so I’m chunking the bleach method away. My ends are still blonde, but they won’t last much longer. Yay! You can do it! Ain't no shame in starting over because you learn more each time. I sometimes get the urge to color my hair and I will do my hair in a new style to satisfy the need to switch it up. Wearing colored wigs help too! I wish you the very best on your journey 💕

I am used to just having singles in my hair. I usually have the braids take them out, wash my hair, and then get them done again. So mostly just how often, in the beginning, did you wash your hair? and the steps of putting in all these products into my hair

What inspiration! Love the year by year walk-thru! Condensed enough to watch it thoroughly! I would have watched a longer video on this one! I did the same, using a scarf for hair when I was young, etc. And I am willing to put the work in. Only been able to grow just below bra-strap length then it breaks and am finding out I've neglected deep conditioners, protective styling and I hate trims!! But now I see the benefit and doing it in stages helps. Thanks for the blunt honesty you shared. Going for waist length and using your guidance to get there. Need 4 inches!!
Trust the process and after are true words of wisdom!!!! They're the motto I live by. It's hard sometimes to trust the process when things are challenging but it's so worth it in the end. It's also very true that we value the things that challenge us the most. Sometimes we/i need to learn to just let things unfold as they may. That doesn't mean don't work to better what you can it just means put in the effort and trust that the results will follow on their own time in their own way.
Love this video! Please do more videos on your favorite protective styles. I can't commit to long term protective styles like box braids, but I noticed all of yours were temporary !

Thank you for sharing your journey! Is just proves that long healthy hair is not a quick fix, you must put in the work to get it. I started my journey twice, first in 2012 I big chopped and stopped using heat and silicone/sulphate products and again I big chopped in January of this year. I didn't have the healthiest routine although I was using the right products and my hair suffered, that's why I big chopped the 2nd time. My hair was BSL this time when I cut it all to one inch all around because I was determined to have healthy hair. Using a consistent routine and trimming my ends when needed has caused my hair to thrive. I have a long way to go to achieve my goal of waist length but I stick to the product at work for me and continue my routine.
TFS! I noticed that when I started using more natural/vegan products on my hair 90% of the time it started thriving faster and when I stopped using 10 products for wash day. I use just 4 products now (pre-poo, shampoo bar, dc, hair butter) and I learned patience too! I realized I was the cause of my breakage when I would just rip my hair apart and force the comb or brush through it. Also limiting my heat usage has helped big time. I cut off my heat damage in Sept (only had some in the front of my hair) so I cant wait to see what length my hair will be at in about 2 years or even the end of next year

Just cut off my locs after 12 years and have extremely frizzy roots on my short tapered cut. My goal is to grow my hair out as long as possible so I truly appreciate your knowledge and tips. I think we have similar hair texture so I’m excited to hopefully have a better start than I did when I went natural 15 years ago. Things went horrible which is why I ended up locing and I loved my locs but I truly want to see what my natural hair in its naturalist state can do. Trying the Cherry Lola method tonight. So gorgeous! My whole life I wanted long flowing hair. I used to make "wigs" out of construction paper when I was little by stapling long strips to a head band...those beauty standards...Just starting my natural hair journey and hoping I can get it healthy again!

I had a great conditioner, that worked so well, Moisture Rich with vitamin e. But Tresumme changed the formula. My hair is funny with oils, and the wrong conditioners. TFS.

Love your journey. You had to be so patient. Thank you for being one to break away from beliefs that dont serve us.. like the belief that we cant have long, healthy hair. I believe that I am on the right path and wathing your videos help me to Know that it is just a matter of time. I too was a head scarf wearer. For me it was moms best silk slips and skirts. It took me 10 years to grow my hair out to classic length (bum length) from chin length. It takes some time, but if you trim conservatively (just when needed, not just because) it will grow longer!
I am now back to tailbone length (I trimmed a huge chunk last year), and am growing back to classic (bum) length and even beyond that. I am no-trimming for a while now (which is a challenge on the long hair forum I'm on), so I'm hoping to grow quite quickly the next few years.

Growing up as a black women, were there challenges living on the south for you? Did you experience racial injustice and gender inequality? I think every black women goes through that at some point in time because unfortunately that is how the world 🌎 works. It is sad but I think it is an important question to ask? I enjoyed your video. I have been natural for 2 years and 2 months. I transitioned for a year and then I big chopped. I keep my hair regiment simple. I am learning to be patient and consistant. I have always had long hair, but I feel like it is taking longer for my hair to grow. My hair comes down to my shoulders.
I really enjoy watching your videos! It appears we have the same type of hair. Mine is fine and very prone to breakage. I also have an extremely itchy scalp. My beautician can was my haoir and I'm scratching before she can get it dry! After seeing this same spot fall out for the umpteenth time, I figured it's time to stop regrowing the same hair and go natural and healthy. I'm just starting, had my last relaxer on 03/01/2018 but look forward to getting on with this journey to healthy hair. I was going to do sister locks until I started watching your videos and now I believe I can do this! I'm going to try! I look forward to seeing my curl pattern although I am afraid of the transition period and the BIG CHOP! I look forward to more of your videos!
