My hair color:
This a custom color job, created by a stylist at a salon, using a professional system not available in beauty supply stores and which requires a valid cosmetology license to purchase--no I do not know the name. It cannot be recreated precisely and the shade looks different on me every time she touches it up since she blends it up on the spot and it changes shades every time I wash my hair.
Bleach was not used. We have been lifting my hair lighter and lighter over time using developer (which is not bleach) since October of 2015. I will not post a video on how to color because I am not a licensed cosmetologist and I will not give directions on how to use chemicals that I do not have a good understanding of. If you'd like help with achieving this color, please consult a LICENSED professional who specializes in natural hair because coloring will alter your hair and can damage depending on your texture and the process.

Thanks so much y'all 💜💜 this video is getting so much love and I was def not expecting it! My intention for this video was to share the information that helped me make better choices and to direct ppl to it when they asked me for help.. I didn't think ppl would be actively seeking the information bc I was under the impression that ppl were just so fixated on what their curls look like, I'm so glad to be wrong and see ppl are trying to actually understand their curls! For those of you asking how to identify which applies to your texture and what products, please refer to the links I referenced in the video (in the description box) and check out my channel for reviews (I included relevant clickable links in the video as well). Thanks for the support and allowing me to inspire y'all 😩😭🙌🏾

Daye La Soul thank you so much because this is the question I have been asking for so long since following all these natural hair Journeys. I always wondered that's your curl pattern really have anything to do with how your hair grows how your hair prevent breakage, what products you can use to help your hair become more healthy Etc. but you have opened my eyes to a lot more things that I should be working on understanding about my hair in order to have healthy hair. thank you for showing how insignificant of curl pattern is. because you're so real I had to subscribe thank you

Shifter A Ma’am I started the video as soon as the video started and talked the entire 11 minutes. It was important and relevant to discuss the misconceptions about Curl patterns so ppl can understand why the majority of the video is about porosity, strand size, and density instead of the shape of the curl... So in 11 minutes, a person can get the truth about curl patterns, and learn their texture and get tips on how to use their products and develop a routine accordingly-when it takes years to learn that for some-that is efficient... And you sound like a hater. Scrolled all the way thru these comments just to find something negative to say and are dead wrong. GTFOH

@@DayeLaSoul I appreciate that you did that as well. For me, I only "type" my hair as a way to describe my general natural curls patterns (plural because we all have more than one)...but I also always include my porosity and width when talking about my hair because to me it is all important information when discussing haircare. I find a lot of people forget about the fact that the typing system isn't set in stone, like you might have 4b/4c medium porosity hair today, but then you bleach it platinum blonde tomorrow and you end up with 4a/4b high porosity hair. All it matters for, in my opinion, is to describe the current state of your hair.

I remember when this chart was introduced to us in various continued education classes and hair shows and I get why some may want to make distinctions but I think It’s best if we keep it simple so that people learn to understand there hair and what it needs.

Okay. So.... *inhale* I've been natural my whole life. Never had a relaxer or a weave, rarely got it braided. So when natural hair folks started promoting this curl typing thing I was like "whut?" because I didn't understand. I also didn't think it mattered because it felt like another way to divide us. People spent years asking me about my curl type, regimen, what I use, etc. And I always gave a generic answer about density and porosity. They didn't listen bc they wanted a fluffy answer about products and methods. I felt uncomfortable because I sounded bitchy and didn't mean to. YOU. ARE. EVERYTHING. EVERYTHING. EVERYTHING. EVERYTHING. OMG. I don't really watch Natural hair RU-vid channels for advice bc it all sounds the same. YOU? Wonderful. Nicely done.

@DayeLaSoul
@DayeLaSoul 7 лет назад
+Kufre Akpan any texture can be straightened with a flat iron (reference 0:44 of the picture in the video where they're all beautifully straightened ), so what's true? This stigma against kinky textures have to go and it's a direct result of us still holding on to European standards of beauty. "4C" hair can be just as versatile, healthy, long, and manageable as any other texture, it's also not unique to struggle. We literally beat down and confine that Afro textured hair like there arent naturals with a looser "type 3" textures who also combat frizz, shrinkage/reverting? breakage, dryness and issues with finding products. 😒

Of all the youtube videos I've watched, which feels like millions, yours is the one that resonates the most. THANK YOU for pointing out the pointlessness of hair typing. After 5 years natural I still don't know my hair type because no matter how long I stare at those photos and squiggly lines supposedly describing hair, I still can't tell what mine is! One minute I'm sure I'm 4b/4c and the next I'm positive I'm 4b/4a. I've wasted so much time trying to figure it out and I just no longer want to waste my time. THANK YOU for being so clear with your explanations of porosity, density and strand size, and how they determine which types and order of products you should use along with HOW MUCH because I agree that these are the actual valuable pieces of info versus hair type. It took me literally years to understand why my styles never turned out like the youtubers' styles, no matter how exactly I followed their instructions. The day I finally realized I have thin hair (as in less dense), it was like the angels sang because I knew once and for all why my hair never looked as thick and full as other people's - because I simply don't have their density! It made me understand my hair much better and I wish I knew all this a long time ago. The mass majority of youtubers have highly dense hair and I really wish we "thin" ladies had more representation.
@DayeLaSoul

What I dislike most about hair typing, is that the straightest hair gets the highest grade, 1A. The kinkiest, most tightly-coiled hair gets the lowest grade, 4C. Why can't we start with the kinkiest hair and work our way 'down' to the straightest hair? For how many decades have we heard that someone has a "good grade" of hair? Apparently, not much has changed.

Your Boo's Boo I have like 1b hair and NO BLACK NATURAL RU-vidR HAS IT. I feel like we stereotype in a different way because when we think of black girl natural hair it's all about the CURLS,COILS,AND WAVES!! What about us straight haired back girls. I have heat damaged and the only videos I see are how other get curls back from heat damage. Or black girl curly hair routine. That's literally it for black girl hair on RU-vid.
@DayeLaSoul
@DayeLaSoul 7 лет назад
+Jenna Brook and you just stereotyped, as I mentioned earlier, not every black girl on here is natural. And you don't have "1b" Hair, you have damaged hair, theres a difference, heat damage isn't growing out your scalp, curly hair is and you're altering it.... There are a lot of black women with heat damage and relaxers, and significant amount of us wear straight hair and weaves but if you're searching for natural hair tutorials, then obviously you're going to find natural hair black chicks with curly hair... I literally just typed in straight hair hairstyles and relaxed hair hairstyles and all these popular black bloggers popped up. Try searching for what you're actually looking for perhaps?
@MelMeltalks31
@MelMeltalks31 7 лет назад
Daye La Soul I did not stereotype i said a fact , most balck hair gurus only cater to really curly haired girls. My hair is really straight that's my genetics it's been like that since I was a baby . I know it's heat damaged because it's uneven and falling off but that still doesn't mean that my natural hair is really curly(it does have curl just really lose curls). Most of my roots are straight with a slight curl so I'm shaving my hair off and starting again. But my natural pattern is very fine to loose barely visible curls (That's what I learned from my baby pictures). But looking at my hair from forever I can't relate to any of the natural hair gurus so I don't "know what I'm looking for" if none of their heat damaged hair looks like mine. Most of them know their curl patterns and what's left of mine are almost completely gone.
@DayeLaSoul
@DayeLaSoul 7 лет назад
You just said you straighten your hair and have heat damage and in another comment I you say that you still have relaxer, that's not your genetics... Baby pictures aren't an indication and neither is that little bit of hair at your roots because baby/children hair change as they get older and your roots are being weigh down by your heat damage and relaxed hair. You can't say what your hair pattern is until you grow and cut off your damage. And yes, if you are still heat damaged and relaxed, you will not be able to relate to videos with someone who is already fully natural, which is why I suggested you look for straight hairstyles or relaxed hair styles. If you're looking for assistance to get rid of your heat damage and relaxer, then your searches should be about other naturals who are in the transitioning phase of their natural hair journey.

Black and Proud Annettemint has really thick hair too. But another thing is length discrimination. How long have you been natural? Blogger answers 3 years, God forbid she had 5 inches or less! They start to go in on the person! Or dragging people for having a relaxer. People really need to stay out of folks scalps! That's why I am not apart of the natural community, I am just chemical free.

LOL and here you go! Why do you continue to watch me if you do not like what I have to say! I have thick hair. Period. It's not up for debate. You have no idea how thick it is seeing as how you've never dealt with it, nor have you see it without manipulation. I never claimed to have the thickest hair in the world but my hair is thick and once again I am not trying to compete in this IMAGINARY COMPETION IN YOUR CRAZY ASS HEAD. I never reference anyone else hair but my own. You really need to check your insecurities mama. You're always concerned about what every one else has and what everyone else is doing.. Hi Daye! I MUST thank you for your guidance, support and advice. You are helping me to understand my hair as I embark on my natural hair journey(since May 2017). Information you've given about porosity, density and coarseness has been critical in selecting hair care products and tools. Since following you and using Curly Girls products, I have thrown out it given, every other hair care product I had. I have washed my hair 4 times with Curly Girls and have noticed that my hair us more manageable. The flat detangle brush ( I use the one by Goody), is like MAGIC. You are professional and you really care. Thank you and God bless you Daye.

Taniece I know a lot of people tend to get offended, but whether if you don't like what I'm saying or not, it's to help you. You must have some type of heat damage or something. It's best if you cut it off or try to revert your curls back. To do so: STOP USING HEAT‼️ I'm not gonna say it's bad for your hair, but too much of it is to the point where your hair can literally break off, trust me, it's happened to me before. Another tip; watch videos on RU-vid for like heat damage and stuff, ya know? Look it up if you need to! Naturally Curly (a website) and other more can help you with this. You're welcome 😊

Jesus lawd, where TF have you been my whole life with this video?! The struggle has been so real for me since starting my natural hair journey to figure out my hair "type". As I do not fall into any of those hair categories, I couldn't find what kind of hair I have. Then I find this video which has given me so much damn life! Knowledge of porosity, density, texture, etc... has not only answered my questions and provided a clear way for me to find the proper products for my hair. Since seeing this video, I've learned my hair porosity, density and texture and have adapted my hair routine accordingly. The growth in just a month a half is nuts!!!!!! Thank you!

100% agree with you on the hair typing. When I was first natural I remember thinking the type was the most important thing but as I researched I found my porosity was low & realized I was using ALL the wrong stuff lol. I just think most of us have 2-3 different type of curls in our head & digging deeper into the technicals of our hair is so much more important than stressing over the look.

I finally found your video again. I watched this a few years ago. I thought I saved it but apparently not. I appreciate that you didn't let being unlicensed stop you from sharing. I agree with not focusing on typing. My hair is a mix of 4a, 4b and 4c. When my hair is wet it's 4a if I let it air dry it's 4b if I blow dry it it's 4c. It may sound impossible but it's true. But knowing I need the L O C method has been life changing. Also Over the years I've learned that my leave-in needs to be a liquid because my hair absorbs it MUCH better. #BlackHairLoveForever!
@amixeblu
@amixeblu 7 лет назад
I also don't mind the typing system. I know I am 2c, 3a on a good styling day, but I use any kind of product on my hair. I have hip to butt length hair (depending on in which growth fase I am) and I typically need very moisturizing conditioners. I also do oil rinses and use the LOC/LCO method on my hair. It works for me!

I use the Hello Hydration by Herbal Essences, since that is geared towards dry, damaged hair. I typically use conditioners geared towards dry, damaged hair as those are typically the most moisturizing on the market - you don't have to go expensive for that!

Marleen G. Hello Hydration has been my staple for 4 Years! I think I'm officially married to it. It's affordable, great for naturals, I'm type 4, and works well with my oils. Definitely moisturizing but light enough not to be considered a deep conditioner so I use it very often for my co-washes .
