In this video, Jessica and I photograph the same model using different techniques. She uses the natural light available in the studio while I use an off camera flash as my main light. I'm a fan of both styles and think all the images look great!

If you need inspiration with posing create a mood board to not rip off but pull aspects of a pose from just screenshots then pull them into photoshop express to create a collage! I have derp moments with posing too!.

Both photographers are really skilled at what they do. Each type of photo makes sense in a specific context. I say natural light photos are friendlier, the viewers feels close to the model, and they are casual. The off-camera flash photos look and feel formal and distinctive; they are great for magazines and billboards with their special focus on the models. The Natural light photos: Deep DOF, wide-Angle, smooth light => The model is mixed with the background The Off-Camera photos: Shallow DOF, 85mm, focused light => The model is separated from the background

You both had amazing shots. I like shooting natural light, but most of the time I love to shoot with flash. I love the way you can make your shots look real dramatic with flash if you want. It just really gives your subject the beautiful light on the face and you don't usually have to touch it in post.... Great video!!!!

What I liked about this video is that, you guys did everything in a very friendly way, unlike other flash vs natural light comparisons where the flash photographer is always shown as the superior one. You guys did it in such a way that anyone can understand the advantages and disadvantages of both, unlike showing that one is superior to another. I personally like the flash shots more, but again that's a personal choice and cannot be termed as superior or inferior.

Flash photographers who can actually do a good job like Manny can, are superior, because they shoot really well natural light too. "Natural light photographer" just means I don't know how to use flash well/at all. And it's clear here whose work trumped the other, but if that's mentioned suddenly you're a negative person. Everyone wants a medal for participating in today's soft world.

I don't want this to be taken the wrong way because I thought both sets of images were fantastic. However, the first thing I noticed, especially in the posing and editing is that I could tell what images were taken by a man and which ones were taken by a woman. Not regarding the quality, again, they were both fantastic. However, stylistically, to me, Jessica's photos definitely had a more feminine look and Manny's looked more masculine or maybe a better way to say it is, Jessica's photos looked more like what I would see in a woman's magazine and Manny's looked more like what I would see in a men's magazine.. This was a great video.

In my opinion, male photographers focus more on technical stuff (dof, aperture, gear) and female photographers focus more on creativity and not the technical side of it. I know a few female concert photographers who make amazing pics but they don't know which settings they used ! Really

I think the same way charles. i am also shooting in natural light but when I start to used flash in my shoots the pictures look more professional and its saves me time from editing the under exposed pictures.

Manny I think your comment about how you get freedom regarding posing with natural light is so on point. While I do like your photos with the flash, the difficulty of having to place your model according to the light setup is always a big hassle compared to the Freedom of movement with natural light

Love both equally, they are so different in the best ways. Jessicas feel more natural (not the poses, but the shot as a whole) which is what you want working with natural light. Soft, with a film vibe. Mannys is equally as great but has more of an editorial, clean, glossy, magazine look.

the biggest benefit of shooting with studio strobes/flash is sensor saturation. The photosites become saturated with colour and light allowing the magic of the lens to really shine through. Kudos to you sir!

Two great photographers at work is always fun to watch. I think it's is good to know both natural light and flash, both have their benefits and draw backs. Someone mentioned that with flash all the photos tend to look the same. Well, I'm not sure that is true because it might be the photographer adopting by choice a particular style. But even if, it can be a huge advantage to get consistant results, some clients will demand consistency.

learning how to control your light and understanding ambient vs. strobe is very important! Usually, on camera flash isn't powerful enough or the lighting is very 1 dimensional. Hence he's using off camera! AND the benefit of using stobes is the catch light in their eyes, especially when a model has darker eyes, it really "sparkles"

I think Jessica Kobeissi's natural light photos are really beautiful but your flash photos are on a different level. Great post processing on both sides. The flash photos have better skin tones with more details. The venue with all the white walls, floors and windows is actually the best conditions for natural light photography, so I am guessing Jessica suggested the location. My photos consist about 90% natural light and 10% flash. Flash photography adds a new layer of difficulty but if you nail it perfectly, the photos are magic.

Tatyana Zadorin You can't quite claim that until you've shot with a flash (long enough to master it properly). If all you do - is shoot in natural light, you're not in a position to promote natural light photography. To Me, addictive photography is beautiful photography - and in My experience, more often than not that's controlled environment strobe photography. You see the punchy, deep rendition of Manny's work? The superior dynamic range? The skin tones? Very difficult to reproduce without a flash. Not always impossible, but more often than not, it is. I see Jessica's pictures look quite a bit flatter, duller - not because she's a bad photographer, but because she used no flash. It's true that on occasion no-flash images will render a character very difficult to reproduce with flash, but that is more of an exception than a rule. They say, Sue Bryce shoots natural light only: I wonder if that's true - her images look anything but snapshots. Idem, fine art still lives. Check Chris Knight: his work (save for a couple, such as the one with Lindsay Adler clad in fur): www.chrisknightphoto.com/index/G0000wMIJxFvL8mQ/I0000k8T.YQtAA3I That's Flash photography for you! The way I see it, is that many "photographers", either too lazy, technically disinclined or simply poor - hype up natural light imagery to validate themselves. Not saying that's the case with you, but it does stand (in general).

LeoInterHyenaem I think is just a matter of preference! I do know how to use flash but still I prefer natural lighting, not because I’m lazy, not because I don’t know how to use it or cuz I’m poor Haha some photographers prefer natural light just because and that seems difficult for some people e to understand! Of course there are some times where I’d like to use some flash but with natural light it’s easy to work with when you are by yourself, it’s so practical. Again, I think is just a matter of preference.

I think its not about wich ligth source you use, if you use flash or "natural ligth" , i prefer to call it "circunstancial ligth" instead,the behaviour its the same. So its not about the source its about how you use it to expres your vision of the photo or you art. If the flash will be the tool that allow your self to expres use it, if its natural ligth so use it. For me ligth its the same but, some times you need to add ligth, substract ligth, etc to reach your art, i dont like to stay with flash or circusntancial ligth because it make you a pretext Photographer. Wow! The natural light vs Off camera flash. Jessica's natural portrait results presents light mood to the eyes while manny's off camera portrait results presents dramatic mood. Both are GOOD and defends on situations and the preference of the photographer.

Wow, I have always loved Manny's shots but in comparsion Jessica's has a lot more character in them, in my opinion. That said, I love both of their channels. Natural light vs OCF really comes down to personal preference. Can't get over how awesome natural light looks! Manny you should collab with Irene! I really enjoyed this video. I love the power of off camera flash how much control you can have of both ambient light and the fill. But when natural light photography is dialed in and it is soft light. I don't think there is anything better. With this being said I need to continue working with both. Another disadvantage with flash is that you can mimic the same look everywhere you go...so everything starts to look identical. With her having to constantly adjust to the ambient light she was able to get more looks and be more diverse. But both looks came out very well.

I love natural light, but flash will always just have that edge of natural light, adds some amazing pop and the dynamic range in the images just makes it even that more appealing as well, but Jessica's posing etc always next level and her editing style as well is amazing!! People who don't understand artificial light photography often say this. First of all, I guarantee both photos are edited. Second, the reason to use Flash is it brings out colors more. You can definitely get great shots with natural light and you need to know how to use natural light before you start using artificial, but natural light can't get those results.

@@juaresdeoliveira6476 actually is not that it looks much more pro , using the flashlight gives the photo more vibrance but what you should be judging is the angles and how the models look more natural in Jessicas photos . He is not bad at all but Jessica is the one ahead in terms of photography skill .

Love the shots. But you can see the pros and cons to both styles. With the natural light, the model can move, more variety in poses. And although Jessica's shots looked great, you can tell when the model was backlit by the window, there was a lot of processing to brighten up the model. As compared to using a flash, yes, the model needs to stay relatively still and pose, but you control the light, the shadows, and with that, less noise and post processing. Both of you are goals tho. Thanks for inspiring!

flash is ALWAYS SUPERIOR (well 99%) to natural light..... per unit of time FLASH has incredible sensor saturation......for the same unit of time, natural light SUCKS.....sucks bad.

My opinion - using flash makes the pictures pop more, although Jessica's shots seem more natural and without flash Jessica can capture models in motion. Love Jessica's killer shot at 4.08. wow!

Both you guys did a great job.. what Manny said was so True about being stuck in one place.. I always shoot both.. for instance for most street portraits I use natural light.. but if see something dynamic I step in to flash and make it work for that part of the Shot.. Good Job Everybody, but the winner is definitely the Model.. she rocked.. and stole the show...😁👍🏼

I enjoyed that this was super positive. Both look good and serve different purposes much like different tools accomplish different jobs. As a photographer it is important to know how to use both whether or not you choose to apply them.
