In this video, I show you a live demonstration of how I shoot natural light and off camera flash photos and then discuss the good and bad of each style. I love both styles of photography and implement them into my work all the time!

In my opinion it is harder to shoot with natural light than with off camera flash. I love augmenting natural light with off camera flash but on those cloudy days it is nice to be able to put a light behind the model with a gel to simulate golden hour light while using a main light to control the drama. great video. keep up the good work.

I'm a natural light photographer and I luckily have never once had to reschedule a session. But that is because I don't schedule very specific sessions like "It HAS to be the golden hour and no rain". I work with a very specific kind of client and due to that, it allows so much freedom to "work with what we've got". As long as the kind of location is correct, we can work with what mother nature throws our way and I am so thankful for that. This video is great and super informative and I thank you for making it!

Absolutely amazing video Manny, and I love that you processed both the flash and natural light shots, to bring out the most of them, not just saying that one is better than the other. I personally love using my A7II with the 85 1.8 FE with natural light whenever possible. But if it's not the perfect time of the day, the natural light is MUCH more limiting when it comes to background selection, because you can only shoot the model is a specific angle. And funnily, after my shoots, my clients always buy the flash pictures :) A HUGE problem with natural light, is the colorcast on the skin (caused by grass, colorful buildings etc.) It's an absolute pain the correct in photoshop.
@thebeatingdiabeteslifestyl3486
Great video. I shoot both natural light and OCF and find that I like both. Like you said: whatever the style and situation calls for, you have to enjoy what you do.

Great Stuff! I think its great to show some versatility between OCF and Natural light. You are absolutely correct when you spoke of understanding light. I saw Clay Cook take his hand (raised in front of him) and turn like a sun-dial to watch the shadow move across his hand which indicated how the light and shadow will hit his subject. Thanks for taking the time to teach and explain!

I'm especially enjoying this new channel and the filming setup where you just speak into the camera and overlay B-Roll. Thanks for making the video that convinced me to get an Xplor 600 last year. Prior to this winter, I had only shot natural light ONCE in the last six years and that was because I grabbed the wrong bag on my way out the door and got to the location with no lights! I had a reflector in my camera bag and pulled off a great shoot anyway. But with the crappy weather we've had days in and day out around here, I started intentionally shooting NL on several shoots and have loved the results. As you say, different conditions require different solutions. I'm glad I have rediscovered natural light shooting.

Love the shot of your wife in the snow. I also like the idea of just taking one lens when going shooting. We all probably start out with one lens. But, over time we accumulate more lenses and use certain lenses for certain types of shots. I like to mix it up and maybe just take a wide angle and shoot something that I would usually use telephoto to shoot. It's fun and sometimes you get great results.

Manny, both your Nat-light and Flash work is amazing. Being able to handle both is making you more well rounded artist. Great job! So that said, the next step would be for you to show how to get Nat-light look with strobes. Because there is a very clear look that off-camera lighting presents. But if you can be skilled with the flash and blend the flash subtly into the ambient, that would present the next level! Then you can have nat-light look without being at the mercy of mother nature. I think that would be a great video for you to make and we'd all appreciate your take on that skill. peace!
