Sean, this is one of the best tutorials for skin editing I've seen! Natural edits is KEY and unfortunately too much of what we see on social media and even RU-vid is wanting to make everyone look like their skin is flawless/perfect and that just isn't realistic. I very much appreciate you putting out this video!

I thought the longer videos were cool, however these bite sized pieces are quite nice. You know how to use, and when to use the instruments in the tool palette and not go overboard with the subject you're working on. Thank you for this series 🤗.

That's pretty much the routine I came up with back in the days of PS 5 for retouching. I noticed that the skin texture was defined by light and dark areas so I'd go through and do the dark areas and then again with the light areas, much like what you did. At first I went overboard so I started using layers and opacity to fine tune each type of edit. I agree with you about things like moles and will only lighten them a bit. One thing I started doing a couple years before I had to quit photography for health reasons was to light the subject with a large soft light source and then in front of that a smaller more contrasty light so I got a nice highlight on the skin but it wasn't so bad I had to retouch it down a notch. It was easy to set up too. I used it on a lot of clothing catalog shoots.

Sean, a big fan of your work. Thanks for putting together videos that are easy to follow. One of my biggest problems with not making progress (other than ADHD), is that I feel like retouching is so overwhelming to learn. There is a daunting number of steps if I go to see many folks' tutorials. Thanks for keeping this simple, and I love the fact that the results look so natural !!

Ps when your using the pipet at the third step, make sure you have the pipet settings to 1x1 other wise it will make a mixed color of multiple samples. Sometimes it can be handy to get a more samples color. In this case i doubt its useful

Great video always. I remember watching "How to Edit Dramatic Portraits in Photoshop" a few years ago. Each time you moved on to the next layer, I paused and youtube searched every step to find out "every little thing I'm doing" to absorb the technique. I'm not sure how this series is going to be consistent with that one, but I think it would be very beneficial to understand the whole process first watching "How to Edit Dramatic Portraits in Photoshop", then dive into the details. The two piece videos are my portrait Masterclass. The story telling, the gear set up, the prep, and developing and retouching. The other one is "Planning and Shooting a Portrait Project (featuring the Godox AD200)". They are made in 2017, but they don't fade out in this day and age.

This is very similar to how I retouch. Although I did pick up a few helpful tips here. Happy to see someone else uses this method. I always assumed I was doing it some weird way. Never been able to get a nice natural look with frequency separation and I haven't got the patience to do dodge and burn retouching.

Two words: Master Class. Maybe two more words: Thank You! As someone who's re-entering the photo passion a little later in the game, I have a real appreciation for people who have learned their craft...and found the sweet spot for how to share these nuggets of wisdom with others. There are a few bright stars on RU-vid, but Sean may be the subtle supernova - calm, honest, decent, clearly intelligent, clearly someone who's put in the hours and has built up a body of work that just amazes with its humanity, craftsmanship and accessibility. A modern version of the Old Masters, he has a signature style that just radiates and hums on a specific frequency. How cool that we live in a world where this expertise is available for easy viewing on a Sunday morning in such charming fashion. The skill itself - well that's definitely going to take some time. What he makes look rather easy is the result of years, years, years of studying the human face and acquiring the tools to bring out its authentic shine. Again, thank you. Can't wait for the rest in this series. Massive contribution to the community worldwide. 👏

Interesting approach you have there, lightening shadows on a pore level. I like my portraits lookinh natural as well and start my workflow the same way. But then I do the frequency separation thing -lightly! I tried painting over lightly with sampled colours but I was too heavy-handed I think. Might give that another go. Thanks for a great video 🙂
@lolilollolilol7773
@lolilollolilol7773 2 года назад
It's really like the process of painting, so it does require some training. The lighter the touch and the more strokes the better the result, but also it will take a lot of time. At first, you will tend to take a large brush but with experience you'll tend to take a smaller one.

Although I've been wanting to update my retouching style. This is very similar to how I edit; using a blank layer for skin. I use frequency separation, and I'd like to use D&B more often. I like your natural style; it takes practice and some "overdoing" to know when to stop I'd like to to get back to portraits as well in 2022 Sean. Covid-19 lockdowns from 2020 still have me out of sync

Thank you, Sean! I'm new to portrait photography and editing. I've been watching a number of videos on RU-vid by different creators on skin retouching. I'm still trying to get my arms on the use of PS. I like your approach to skin retouching. My goal is to use the techniques that you presented in this vid and apply them to some of my previous portrait photos. With the new updates to PS, have you tried the skin smoothing feature under Neural Filters? What are your thoughts?

Thank you for posting this. I do have a question: could you elaborate more on why you prefer this over frequency separation? I have tried this method here, frequency separation, and some sort of high pass method. I found working with frequency separation to be easy given a light touch, but find your method more approachable and easy to build up. I’m at a loss when I am trying to find a tried and true method with skin editing. Thanks!
