Nautical, iRocker and Blackfin are boards that we get lots of questions about at SUPboarder. All three come under the iRocker brand but they are very different from each other, with very different price points, and available in different sizes and constructions, with different fittings. In this SUPboarder overview video we help you understand what makes the boards different and which would be best for you.

I never stress equipment or brands. When I start any new activity I will buy minimal gear and the cheapest I can fine. If I enjoy the activity or love it as I do Paddle Boarding, I upgrade to the best value product I am willing to pay for and that will fit my specific need. They ways that people use paddle boards is so different each product will serve different individuals best. Great work at making the this distinction in the model choices. Happy Paddling!

My review of the 11'6" Nautical. Ive paddled about 30km+ so far mostly open ocean, island to island through big chop. 5'9" 145lbs athletic male Build quality is great. The front n rear handles are a must when loading into the water. My middle fin couldnt lock in place at first, it was literally just 2mm too thick in one spot to slot in securely. So i just shaved off that 2mm and it slotted in just fine. Other than that, all seams were perfect, it feels great and firm in the water. Performance. I took it on a glass water lake and had a friend join me (total weight on board 300lbs) and it was great! Such a cruiser on calm conditions. But i like to ride open ocean and eventually want to do white water river runs. In open ocean chop with some rolling waves 3-6ft high this was a dream. I caught a few waves and felt super stable as long as i was using good technique. Even though its not a touring board, it cuts through chop head on well enough. But does suffer from the round head getting sucked to the water surface and slapping in rough rolling conditions (many iSUPS suffer from this) i may adjust my technique more. It also catches a few waves pretty decently. Step back turns are a bit harder because of the length and size but doable. I will note, due to rear bungee placement, if you have anything strapped down back there you cant make a step back turn as easy if youre trying to be sporty. It also doesnt feel the best because youre standing on bungees when doing a step back, but this isnt meant to be super sporty (that won't stop me from trying) The bungees are great quality and im so excited to gear up some wet bags and go out for an expedition! But i will remove the 2 side fins and go for a longer main one for that speed bonus, the Nautical has a great glide and id like to max that out. The bag is good quality, it does chafe around the neck if you dont utilize the waist strap enough so my plans to hike up to mountain lakes may need some adjusting. Hand pumping gets a lot easier once you learn the technique (yes there is a technique bahahaha). I used to have to take 2 breaks and pumping would take 5/6 minutes, now it takes me about 3.5 minutes non stop. Overall, id easily recommend it. I was deciding between the Nautical and the Sport. I may see if there is somewhere i can test drive the Sport version as im loving the one i have now! If you have any questions lemme know!

Thanks for the in-depth insights into the Nautical 11'6. Sounds like it's a great board and working for you. We agree there could be some adjustments made and you bring out some good points about the fin set-ups for faster paddling and the bag needs adjusting for longer carrying. If you try the Sport, we'd love to hear your thoughts on the difference between them. Seems like it might solve the issue you have with the rear bungees. Thanks again, Beau

We packed a lunch, towels and blanket in our 30L dry bag and headed for a less populated beach spot. Our combined weight is 235 lbs and we had no trouble with the board. We took turns paddling while the other sat/laid-back on the board. I know she will have many more years of fun on this board! I'm thinking I need the Blackfin-X for me and my husband! Thanks again!

I brought an iRocker all round 11 early last year -UK- (im 6ft 2 and 100kg so needed a larger board + loads of storage space for dry bags for a good day out) - its bloody brilliant and really well made and pretty tough and good quality accessories - was more than i wanted to spend originally but glad i did - well worth the money and great service from iRocker. If i was buying again id probably still go qith the mid range iRocker - does everything i want to.

Go for a board that is about 33" or 34" wide and at least 10'6" in length. It will be wide for added stability when doing yoga, but also stable enough for standing and kayaking. The Blackfin XL would be suitable, and there are other brands too if you search for the right width and length. Hope this helps! Beau

Best review I’ve found. I’m 6ft 4in and 300 pounds. I need a stable board that I can tour and light fish also want to put Larry chair on it. Trying to decide on the x or xl black fin which size and board do you recommend and also is the irocker board a good option for me? Thanks
@SUPboardermag
@SUPboardermag 4 года назад
Hey Josh. Glad you found the review helpful. For you I feel you will need a stable stiff board. I would look at the XL Blackfin. The shorter X will work as well. But the extra length of the XL really will make it better for paddling a little further and fishing too. Because you are tall it will take a little while to get relaxed with the board but when you get comfortable it will paddle well. If you want a board with more stability you can go wider, but it will make the board slower to paddle. I hope that helps Reuben

Hi Charlie It depends of what size your kids are really but if they are less than 50 kg each, a general all round iSUP would be good 10'6 x32". Very informative, I am in the market right now. The Nautical has a new 11'6" 32" 6" model. I am 6' 205 and I have been hearing that the 10'6" will be too small. I am new to SUP, can you tell me for my first board, if I am better on the 11'6", 10'6" or I won't see a difference. Not doing anything crazy. mostly calm ponds and rivers. the 11 all around is awesome, I am not sure I want to spend the extra $200, is it worth it for a new to the sport person?
@SUPboardermag
@SUPboardermag 4 года назад
Good questions. First off. If you are looking to paddle further than a longer board is better. If you want to focus on catching a few waves and not really paddling around the corner or that far the 10'6 would be better. The stability should be about the same really. The longer 11' boards will offer a bit more stability but not much because that are the same width and thats what really makes the difference. If you are going to get into SUP and paddle maybe once a week or so I would say go for the upgrade. If you want to paddle once a month maybe less go nautical.. Any help ? Thanks Reuben

I'm 6'3", 240-250lbs, and 65 yrs. old. I'm looking to buy a new board that is stable for a big guy but also has some speed. I need to keep up with my better half who's on a 12'6"x27"x6" race board. I'm thinking the iRock 11' All-Around would be a good choice. What are your recommendations? Also, what are your thoughts about a 5" thick board vs a 6" thick board for me? Would there be much of a difference? I've read that for tall riders, 6" might raise the center of gravity too much and make the board feel "tippy". Thanks.
@SUPboardermag
@SUPboardermag 4 года назад
Hey John Good questions in there.. So the 11' would be a good choice, still not as fast as your partners board but not bad for overall speed. If you wanted to look at a faster board it would be something like the www.supboardermag.com/equipment_guide/blackfin-model-v-triple-layer-composite-12-6-32-2020-review/ but understand the cost is up with that one. Regarding thickness its very true that you may feel not as stable but also at the same time a 5" will have to be the same stiffness as the 6" board to give the board a more stable platform for you at your weight. And the thicker the board the more stiffness it will have unless it has stiffening rods etc. Thats why boards like the Blackfins with the carbon rails are so stiff. I personally think you will be fine and better on a 6" board at your size. I hope that helps? Reuben

@SUPboardermag
@SUPboardermag 3 года назад
Good question, and to be totally honest I would say that one of them has just got their volumes wrong. I can't see these boards being too different in the overall volume. I would say that a 10'6 x32x6 would be pretty close to 300L. This is one of the reasons why with all our board reviews we give recommended rider weights :-) and don't really go off of the volumes given, thanks Reuben.

I certainly don't plan to be on my SUP all day every day, so I thought it would be a good fit. And if they tell me no, I can get a job and save up for it in a reasonable amount of time. Do you think it'll be a good fit for me?
@SUPboardermag
@SUPboardermag 3 года назад
Hey Harley. The Nautical would work for you but at your weight you might want to go for a board that has a little less thickness to it. These boards are all 6' in thickness if you look at a thinner board it will be quicker to pump up and lighter to carry to the water and it wont float so high out of the water which is something as a lighter paddler you may not need. A cheaper price board that I feel would work well would be the Aqua Marina Coral www.supboardermag.com/equipment_guide/aqua-marina-coral-drop-stitch-light-technology-10-2-32-2021-review/ . Have a look and see if you like the look of it. The packages that come with the boards are about the same but the bag that comes with the Nautical is better. Does that help in anyway? Good to hear you are getting into SUP :-) Thanks Reuben

Hey Sara. All these boards will work well at your weight. A board that 10'6 long 32" wide and 6"thick will take up to a 220lb rider. so you will be fine. If you want a board to offer you more stability look to a wider board 33"or34" but at your hight also I don't think you will need it. Tall paddlers around 6'2+ sometimes require more stability. Hey there, looking to get my first paddleboard. Looking for something for my dog and I, dog is about 60lbs and I am 135lbs. Live in BC so will do a combination of beaches and calmer lakes. Was hoping to not spend too much but been on my dad's red and really like that I was thinking the irocker but can't decide on what size or whether to wait and bite the bullet to get the blackfin.

Hey Romina , a board like the 11' from iRocker would be a good one. Think having a little bit of length to the board would help when paddling with the dog. Blackfin would offer you more stiffness but yourself and the dog would be fine on an iRocker I feel. Thanks Reuben

Hello! Thanks for the review! I am a decent paddler, so I'd say for traditional use im at an intermediate level. I am interested in getting involved in surfing (maybe even windsurfing with an iRIG in the future). I'm 5'6 and like 90kgs, I'm looking between the iRocker All Around 10 vs the Nautical 10'6. Both I guess would suit me weight wise, but I am wondering if for surfing I should go for the better stiffness of the All Around 10 or do I need to get a longer board for my height? Would the 10'6 be more ideal due to my height?
@SUPboardermag
@SUPboardermag 3 года назад
Hi Kelsey . Yes a 10'6 would be better for your weight and something around 32" wide too. Also not to put you off iRocker but you could also look at a brand like JP Australia who add windsurf Universal Joint threads on their boards too. So you can windsurf them also in future if you wanted too. Just a thought? And you are right stiffer is always better in the surf . Thanks Reuben www.supboardermag.com/equipment_guide/2018-jp-australia-allroundair-106-windsurf-sup/

Which board will withstand waves better from boats passing by or during the wake zone? Great video and informative!
@SUPboardermag
@SUPboardermag 3 года назад
Hi Sarah, With any board the wider it is the more stability you will have. But for most people the 32" wide boards will be enough if you weigh up to 85-90kg for most conditions. Out of these boards any of them at that width will feel very similar in those conditions and be able to handle choppy waters. You can go wider 32"+ for a more stable board but remember a wider board will be slower to paddle. Hope that helps a bit? Thanks Reuben

@SUPboardermag

Hi Ron. Yes this could be true. But we really try to recommend a realistic paddlers weight. In other words… The board could take that much physical weight before sinking (485lb). But could a rider of that weight actually stand and paddle the board? Does that make sense? Sorry if we have confused you . Thanks Reuben

@SUPboardermag
@SUPboardermag 3 года назад
Hey JB. I would look at a board with a bit more width 33,34". It will give you so much more stability, which you will want for fishing. I have had a look at the famistar 12x32x6 and I would say it doesn't look the best board. A tell tell is the click in side fins (they look a bit like a half moon) they are so cheap and paddlers often lose them. It sounds like you are going to be getting into the sport so going for a better board at the top of you price range will make a difference to your safety and enjoyment in the end. Answer to your question... yes it would float you but it wont be that comfortable. IRocker make some great boards at a great price. And if money wasn't an issue this is the best board for you www.irockersup.com/paddleboards/blackfin-model-xl-inflatable-paddle-board/ . But the AQ Atlas could be a cheaper price point alternative www.aquamarina.com/products/advanced-all-around/atlas. check our video of the range here :ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Hkw96kpEbeY.html . @SUPboardermag 3 года назад
Hey JB, There are so many okay inflatable boards out there that will definitely do the job. And I think if you're looking to possibly upgrade to a nice headboard in the future then definitely not spending lots of money now is probably a good move. It's funny, the old driving over the board video.. a few years ago all of the brands were doing this and I would say that you could possibly do this with most isups because of the way they are glued together. Definitely going for a multiple layer board is going to add a little bit more to the weight but it is going to give you a much stiffer board and a much more durable board so this is one of the key things to look at. A basic tip is always look at the reader feedback and comments on their social media channels if a lot of people are happy with the product and the brand than it can offer a good price point bored to get you into the sport. thanks Reuben

I spent over a thousand dollars on a blackfin xl at the beginning of the pandemic. I've enjoyed the board bit over the last year the glue has failed in multiple places on the deck and in the seams. Considering it was made in crazy times I can forgive receiving a flawed product, what I can't forgive is Irockers refusal to make it right. When I contacted customer support about the problem they sent me glue. When I told them I was unhappy with having the customer fix manufacturing defects on a board that is less than a year old they sent me an email telling me how to apply the glue and that they were sorry I felt that way. They didn't even offer to have me send them my board so they could fix it.
@suchgr8hieghts
@suchgr8hieghts 3 года назад
I mean.. yeah sounds a little lazy on their part. But uhh....on your part too. Thats how the deck is held on. By glue. Add more glue dude. You can do it lol makes sense that that would happen on an inflatable from inflating and deflating and rolling up and general use.
@boltvanderhuge1273
@boltvanderhuge1273 3 года назад
@@suchgr8hieghts I can put glue on the board and I did but thats not really the point. It's an expensive board that's less than a year old and the glue is coming up in 10 different spots. The glue shouldn't be failing and it is. That's like buying a car and the paint fades in the first year and someone telling you it's cool because paint fades.
@SUPboardermag
@SUPboardermag 3 года назад
Hey Bolt. That doesn't sound good. I have seen deck pads come aways from all types of boards and brands. It's a boards that have pointy edges on their deck pad opposed to smooth round corners generally do tend to catch and peel more. But I haven't heard of any other iRockers having this problem so far. It does sound like your deck pad is coming off more than just in the odd place. I'm not defending a rocker in anyway but I also have heard exactly the same process of customer service from all brands. I guess this is the problem with buying a board that isn't available in a shop. If you could take it into the shop they could physically see the board and how damaged it is and possibly repair it for you or replace the board if they saw fit. Big thanks for your comment it's always good to see and read about everybody's feedback from their boards. Reuben

Hey Luis. The Nautical is a great all round board. And because its still 6" thick its still nice and stiff and will be able to carry two average weight paddlers. The only down side to the 6" thick board for you is it wouldn't surf as well as a thinner 5" thick board. That’s was a very open and clarification review ! Some points I would like to complain as wrapped in plastic thing and the aluminum paddle ! As starboard always packed with card boards , the other brands must change their minds about that ! And us , the customers , must push them in the direction to avoid plastic . Other suggestion is that they would offer how to chose a different paddle material , if you want - because at the end is more material to discard in the future ! Is there some brand that came without a paddle ? It might be better in the future ! And about the bags - they also always try to offer a better quality and recycled materials ! Thanks again for your review and please take account of these comments as you are more closely to the brands ! Best Regards and Keep Paddling and safe ! Fabio Souza

Would the iRocker or the Blackfin be better for Yoga?
@SUPboardermag

Hi Kimberley, irocker will probably be better because they have less stuff on the standing and deck area to get in your way when you are doing yoga. Definitely look at the wider possibly 32" at least. If it's just for yoga I potentially would look at a slightly wider board to give you that much more stability unless you are wanting to paddle it further as well because it will slow you down being that much wider. Another board which works well for yoga was the Bluefin Aura yoga board. Thanks Reuben

Thanks for an honest review in a time where so many reviewers just seem to push every board just for an affiliate sale. I'm really looking at the iRocker, but I was having trouble finding information about the company. I saw your video on Red Paddle and love to see the people behind the scenes as it feels more direct and personal, but I couldn't really find any info on iRocker's background. Have you had positive interactions with them? You mentioned their use heavy use of plastic packaging, and that seems a bit ignorant considering their industry and that they should strive to be respectful of the joy the precious waters give us. I'd consider Red Paddle as I got a good vibe from them, but their boards are beyond my budget unfortunately.

Hi Daniel. Thanks for your comments and feedback about our videos. Generally we have heard pretty good things about iRocker and their brand from the paddlers around the world. Most people seem really happy with their products and customer service that they received in the past. That's the problem with our views we can only judge it on the actual board, so we very much rely on our followers to tell us what the brand has been like for them. I know that they are trying to reduce Plastic in packaging and by us highlighting it in our videos it is really making a difference and brands are having to change it quicker. Red Paddle co are a great example where you pay more for a product and they seem to be putting much more back into the product and the environment. These cheaper brands will have to follow otherwise they will be left behind. Thanks Reuben

Slower on the water but super stable for myself and my dog. We paddled every weekend. I'm 6'2 290lbs. Oscar is about 40lbs. I was thinking about getting the XL but not sure it can float us without losing stability or turning into a banana/taco. What are your thoughts? XL? Stick with a newer Adventurair? Any other suggestions for us? Thanks for your time and knowledge!!
@SUPboardermag
@SUPboardermag 4 года назад
I feel the XL will take your overall weight and will be nice and stiff. Probably stiffer than your JP. Speed wise it may feel about the same or a little faster. The reason is... It maybe narrower which will help with glide speed but it is shorter too, so this will bring speed down comparatively. Make sense? Gut feeling it will feel like a more responsive slightly faster board to use over all. Don't worry about stiffness! Does that help? Thanks Reuben

SUPboarder what makes the Irocker better in your opinion for board and package than the bluefin carbon board? I am trying to decide between the bluefin carbon cruiser 10’8 and the Irocker all around 11. Both are 799. The bluefin has a 5 year warranty and the upgraded materials to the PVC, Duo air chamber, and the carbon rail reinforcements. As a board, it seems like the similar amount of cargo, handles, and D rings and PVC construction, but extras on the bluefin and the higher PSI rating make me think the Blue fin will be a better performer with less compromise going inflatable because of the extra rigidity. As for the accessories, both have a bundle of great accessories, but the blue fin has the bag with wheels included, the carbon fiber paddle, and the kayak seat and extra paddle blade already included, so accessories appear to be better with blue fin. I am curious since i have never seen either board in person or used them, I would love to know the reasoning behind the Irocker with what seems to be less features, less rigidity, and less accessories, with 3 years less warranty. Any advice is appreciated
