Although I don’t necessarily think any culture should be able to claim the moon as “theirs”. I just don’t think we should start filling the moon/space with our waste in general.
Have you even watched Apollo footage? From a tidy-camping perspective, how they cleaned the vehicle before leaving the moon was offensive. In at least one mission they threw things as far as they could, just for yeee-haw value.
They would not object to those who may someday live, die and be buried on the moon for heavens sake. None of us should celebrate privatization of another orb in the heavens because somebody thinks it would be 'cool' to be buried on the moon. Is nothing sacred? Nothing?!
You mean the people who never came up with any kind of science are gonna have to deal with the fact that science now allows us to travel away from the planet??
it's that we should look at the beauty of any cultures gods, or holy people (spirits) creations. In the Navajo culture it has its story's, we are in the yellow world with the sun and corn. By any means we all should respect and own up to it. not disrespecting it by sending human remains to a place of beauty
@@clayoreilly4553 Is it really significantly different from all the money that gets spent to put dead bodies into the ground, wrapped in multiple containers? Here everyone is concerned about a few grams of incerated, inert material being dropped on the moon. Meanwhile, how much space is wasted on earth by all these cemataries storing the remains of the dead? So many corpses pumped full of chemicals to inhibit any decomposition, just lingering and contaminating the ground that could be used to grow crops. Yeah, dropping ashes on the moon is a huge problem.
I mean, I definitely agree we shouldn’t be turning the moon into a giant graveyard. That’s pretty dumb. I’m not gonna lose sleep over it, but the moon should belong to everyone or no one
why should they have a say are they soon going to claim the moon as Native American territory? The moon is already owned by three nations the U.S Russia and China and soon India will become a fourth player.

@@marcosolo6491the moon doesn't belong to rich people for there personal graveyard. It's a waste of money resources and pollutes a place before we can even get there. That's a lot of space garbage for rich people to feel better about their deaths.
The Moon doesn't have an environment. It's a deserted wasteland with no oxygen or life. It's always being bombarded by cosmic radiation with no protection. It's just a ball of dust.
The same rights that people that create cemeteries here on earth have, I suppose. I'm not advocating for moon "burials" by any means but if silly people with too much money want to spend it by launching human remains to the moon, that's their prerogative. @@grahamimal8336
The same rights that anyone has to establish a cemetery anywhere, I suppose. Regardless, it's absurd to expect NASA to be able dictate what occurs on any celestial body @@grahamimal8336
American christians should be standing side by side with the Navajo! Any follower of mythology can make laws over everyone else, right? It is their deeply held belief that they should have say over the Moon. You cannot fight against them while claiming that your deeply held religious beliefs must be the law of the land.
The ex had a buddy who was supposed to empty ashes over the Gulf of Mexico from his plane. When he landed he saw that a lot of the ashes blew back into the window and were all over the carpet in the back. He vacuumed them up and those ashes ended up in the landfill at the dump.
This is a great example of where the world would be so much better if people discarded superstition and mysticism in favour of reality. The idea that any organization, private or public, would require some sort of religious approval for any kind of project is absurd. One would have thought that by the 21st century humanity would have discarded religious oppression. Sadly, particularly in the U.S.A., that is not the case.
...so i suppose there is no "superstition and mysticism" involved in wanting to have your ashes scattered on the moon, or what..? although, i have to say i totally agree with your last sentence...
@@clayoreilly4553yeah, two religious groups that have hated each other for hundreds of years because of their differing religions.... _religion is evil_

Yes, the newest religion is greed, power and arrogance. Once viewed with suspicion now admirable. What kind of nut thinks wasting resources to get their sorry dead remains to the moon is noble or advisable. It’s just another status symbol for the not too brights to be impressed with. Similar to the pollution caused by space tourism. Perhaps a ride down to the titanic is something for them to try.
Personally, I think that it is disgusting that we are wasting earth's precious resource to dump dead people on the moon. We waste enough resources here on this planet without making the moon into a trash heap. It would be different if people actually live on the moon and passed away. Maybe we should consider more regulations on what goes into space if this is the type of thing that will be allowed.
@@ironfist7789 Nobody ELSE is using Moon rocket energy for the express purpose of depositing bodies on the Moon EITHER. There's a plan to go to the moon. Since they're already going, some industrious person said "Hey since you're already going to the Moon anyway, could you leave some ashes up there while you're there? We can pay."
It's like one Oz of very fine ashes per person that is released into space, and these "space burial" missions do no happen often. It's not like we're sending Cadavers by the rocket load every week and just dumping them on the moon...
My thoughts on this is no the us government shouldn’t turn the moon into a human graveyard. The American flag isn’t enough? What are they trying to accomplish? I thought we were using our technology to better understand space exploration and space itself. NASA should be doing better than this.
This is not about beliefs or if the moon belongs to anyone. This is about one sovereign political entity (US Gov and NASA) making an agreement (to consult) with with another sovereign political entity (Navajo Nation). An agreement was made to consult with the Tribe before action was taken and the Biden administration also re-committed to consulting with Tribal Nations when developing federal policies that impact them in 2021. Its not about culture or belief. It's about keeping the US government, agencies, departments, and companies regulated by the US governments to do what they said and agreed to do. This is about keeping your Government to Government agreements.
If we colonize the moon, should we then allow human remains to be interned there? It is absurd to require that all NASA activities be required to have been reviewed by every earthly religion.
Not sure why the navajo nation thinks it's special and deserves to be consulted over any of the countless other groups, religions, and peoples that consider the moon sacred/holy/significant. The moon is just a big ball covered in dust, adding a tiny amount of dust to all that dust isn't going to mess up the dust. The moon will eventually be used as a waystation for further space exploration anyway, so imagine how much these groups will freak out when people start living there.
I think I'll encase my bowel movement in lucite and have it sent to the moon. This would be in respect to the food I ate to create it. It will be an art exhibit that people can pay big dollars to go and see in person. It will, of course, be signed by MOI!!! 💋
@kylekyle9618 you thinking is an interesting concept but its only conceptual. You have no idea of the significance of it. They've got special status, you don't. You'll gamble in Casinos. They own Casinos. 🤣
I’m all for respecting cultural sensitivities, but the Navajo request is unreasonable. What about when there are bases on the moon and someone dies there?
In my opinion, as a group of people that don't really even have technology, i think they like the thought of being able to influence the moon. Even though they never became astronomically gifted like many other non lazy natives. Navajos were just nomad bully tribes. Other tribes actually studied the stars
@@kamifaye Human remains are not junk. These people have as much rights to doing that as anyone else. The Navajo nation does not own the moon. It’s a piece of rock in space with nothing on it. These claims are just laughable and pathetic.
@@aramgregorylocke5026 but it’s not a “right” is it, because its predetermined by whether or not you can afford it. and yes, it is junk- because they’re not just dumping the ashes but also the containers that they’re in
What gives the Navajo the right to regulate the burial practices of anyone outside of their own culture? Certainly they are not claiming ownership of the moon, are they?
No offense to them, but the moon belongs to everyone. I didn't see the Navajo complain when that Chinese mission went awol and crashed on the moon. Or when the Indians managed to land near the South Pole. Other countries aren't going to care if the Navajo get upset over moon launches. And while the US definitely should be doing more to respect Native American wishes and demands. This one is an exception because again: the moon belongs to everyone on Earth, not just them.
The Navajo do not own the moon. Also, in western culture. Apollo [m] is the sun and Diana/Minerva [f] is the moon. Same dichotomy. It's one thing to ask to preserve known sacred lands on earth. To ask for the same rights in space is arrogance. And I am pretty sure many nations won't recognize the claim.
He should worry about how corrupted his tribe is. He does nothing to change the horrible issues. There’s already a bunch of debris from these space programs to begin with. 🙄🙄
As someone who had grown up around native Americans almost my whole life. Let me just say there is a reason none of the other tribes like or get along with the Navajo nation. They where literally the bullies of the Americas till Europeans showed up. They fought all the time with all the other tibes, taking their stuff because they felt entitled to it. I guess somethings never change.
LOL, sorry interesting observation.... Much as the Europeans ( I am one of them, well Euro descendent) and we often are clueless about the inter tribal/nation conflicts and cultures. Thank you, sincerely.
With authoritarians coming out of the woodwork, it's unsurprising that bullies think their day has come. In fact, it would be odd if they _didn't_ think that.
Someday, somehow we will stop worshiping the mortal human body, after its mission has been fulfilled here on Earth! Then we will find out the magnificent being we really are!
Look, I have the worlds smallest amount of native in me, but everywhere you go seems to be a sacred burial ground, just not the moon. How about when the Navaho nation gets a space program, they can tell other programs what to do.

I dont know. I think human remains should remain on earth unless those human remains came from a human who was born and lived their entire lives on spaceship, asteroid moon, or on another planet. Orherwise, we should be respectful of the wishes of indigenous peoples.
LOL, Hey Humanity if the gift that keeps on giving... In many ways we are like a virus....BUT that does not mean we need to stop being viruses, just learn how to exist without host body ( the universe) and help it as well as harm it. ( like the sucker fish on Sharks)
God damn. I’m all for protecting groups of people to keep things fair, but when is this idea that natives owning everything going to go away? Wish people would stay grounded in reality
Definitely not gonna be listening to people that are all hopped up on firewater or witch doctors. .... By the way, there are less than 200,000 members of the Navajo nation. In other words, they don't matter in the world.
They are the most corrupt native organization in the world. Every year another NN president stealing from the organization and being replaced by another guy that steals from the organization ahahah. You must not actually know a single Navajo to think they are beautiful
WTH, even sending ashes to the moon, with its vast sea of ashy mountains and open areas, is offending someone? America, we have officially gone off the deep end.
Does this open up mining rights, Ownership of planetary land other than the earth? I think there is a lot to discuss before anything like this moves forward. How are the cremation remains delivered and implanted on the lunar surface? Would it be just a scattering of cremation containers littered across the lunar surface? So many questions...
You are overthinking this. The moon is one humongous ashy mass, so sending a few vials of cremains to the surface will not cause an environmental meltdown. That's like saying pouring a cup of cold water into a volcanic caldera may cause it to cool down.
There's a lot to discuss, but none of it concerns Navajos. They are as corrupt as they come in terms in bureaucracy and embezzlement. In fact I would argue they are only making a stink because they want to a piece of the pie. They're actually one of the most corrupt native groups on the planet
Most of you have totally missed the point, no fault there it was covered up by what amounts to a Side discussion of the why they might have objections. The Point IS; The US Government, and NASA in particular, Made An Agreement with the Navajo Nation about this very subject. That Agreement Was NOT upheld. This agreement was that they would be consulted before NASA decided AGAIN to be involved in this 'human-remains on the moon' thing. It is a simple agreement and apparently one that is to damned difficult for the Richest, Strongest, Most Influential Nation the world has ever seen. The USA's Agreements have to mean something, and they often do not, at least is seems they do not. Anyways, THAT is the issue.
Yea, it was an agreement; like the kind you make with your three-year-old child; "Yes honey, Santa Claus is real and he knows several unicorns." But eventually the children grow up and they understand Reality.
This takes the expression 'dead planet' to a whole new level. I'm not Navajo but I agree with their position. I love gazing at the moon and would prefer it not be a cemetery.
Who in their RIGHT mind would even think of taking human remains to any planet other than earth where the dead belongs. These people think of all sorts of crazy twisted ideas to make a dollar. 🙂
The point in going into space is that everything we neef to keep civilization going, is out there for the taking... And if you're not taking it from Earth, that means less polution, disturbing the planet...
