In the early and mid-1990s, gang culture was wreaking havoc in the Navajo Nation capitol of Window Rock. At the same time, punk rock served as a counterweight, providing a healthier alternative to Native youth. There are a handful of influential punk rock bands rooted in the Navajo Nation, and Third Degree is one of them. Mike Nez of Third Degree talks to me about how playing in a punk band helped keep him and his brother out of gang life. And contrasted against this chaos and noise is a sense of peace in the quietude of Box Canyon. Join me as we talk about musical influences, using hooghans as practice spaces with generators for power, and the inevitability that your first songs will suck.
