+Ingrate Alot of European group was as red as Lenins political views, either extreme left or anarchy. And what the Americans view as punk, I would rather class as Punk-rock, not punk. Big difference. This list feels the same like you would throw Marilyn Manson and Sabaton under the same category just because they are both "metal".
+Ingrate Maybe if you knew some bands like Crass, DIRT, Discharge, Sore Throat, Zounds, etc you would realize that not all punk is ramones and sex pistols (iggy isn't punk...)
Yeah like this is a terrible top 10 punk bands LIKE WHERE TF IS NOFX HELLOOOO and sooooo much more like wtf just delete the video the need to re do this shiz
Btw I love the clash,the misfits,nirvana,green day,sex pistols,G.B.H,ska,back flag,the ramones,the Beatles, and many more I am 11 love all of these bands
Where the FUCK are the Misfits, Social Distortion, Bad Religion, Bad Brains, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, Iggy Pop and the Stooges, the Clash, the Sex Pistols, and the Ramones?!?
It's honestly better than I expected it to be I expected to see Green Day and shit like that and only super poppy mainstream bands to be on here. But they did manage to get DK, Bad Religion, Black Flag and Bad Brains
BrainEatPenguin well compared to the jerryfits I can’t argue. Graves wasn’t bad for what It was. They put out better music than the jerryfits, but totally different than the Danzig misfits. All they had the do was change the name and do their own thing and not cash in on the misfits name, or rather the fiend skull logo.
@Christina Azarian I'm a pretty big misfits fan ,Danzig being my favorite vocalist ofc with albums like they walk among us and static age, but I think even with graves misfits should have been at least in the top 6 imo American psycho and famous monsters are some of the best albums in the misfits discography.
British Punk: Actual verses more Anarchistic political thoughts East Coast/L.A. Punk: Not many verses, phrases used a lot West Coast punk minus L.A.: British punk but American
I like how youve mentioned Minor Threat being influences for like 3 of these bands yet they arnt even on here. I as many others in the comments dimiss the Misfits being at number 10. top 5 easily.
The Chew i actually saw him at knotfest 2014 in san bernidino also the misfits was in one of my favorite movies big money hustlas its like one of the gwar movies but made by icp and other cool juggalo artists
Agree. I would've put them as follows: 1. The Ramones/Dead Kennedys 2.The Clash 3. The Sex Pistols 4. Misfits 5. The Stooges 6. Black Flag 7. Bad Religion 8. Rancid 9. Social Distortion 10. Green Day
zak storey For so few songs, huge impact. Personally, I never get tired of them. Never really got into the Ramones, but I think this list is probably pretty on. I have to say, my favorite 3 albumns would have to be: Crass, Penis Envy: Bad Brains, Banned in DC; and either DK's Frankenchrist or The Exploited's, Let's Start a War, Said Maggie One Day. Gang of Four is pretty great too.
I saw this video on June 9th, 2018. I wanted to learn more about rock and roll and Black Flag caught my eye. A year later upon graduating high school I would hear Damaged in its entirety in June 2019. Its raw power blew you apart with an intensity I hadn't heard before, not even in metal. The album was punctuated with witty lyrics of satire as well as deep emotional ones of the human condition. Henry snarled like a caged animal. I was hooked and got My War in its entirety sometime later as well as the work of the first three singers. By late July, I had heard and loved Slip It In and by the end of the year I had heard the entire catalog. I don't know what changed that summer, it just made sense
All these pop punk kids showing up thinking green day and blink-182 should be on the list. Don't get me wrong, I love both of those bands but the fans have to know their place. There's a difference between pop punk and punk. Also, misfits and dead kennedys should've been higher up on the list
This is top 10 Punk band, not Hardcore Punk bands. Give me a valid reason why classic punk rock sound revivers (Green Day) and Skate Punk pioneers/ Pop punk inventors (Blink 182) can't be here. I agree about the difference between pop punk and punk. But early Green Day were as punk rock as the Ramones ever were
Conor Elmes DK and Misfits are hardcore? Not really, maybe DK was, but old Misifts was just Ramonesque pop-punk with shocking lyrics, and now they are a bunch of screamo try-hards (I apologize if you are a Misfits fan). Western Addiction is my definition of hardcore. Anyways, I didn't even mention them in my comment, I just said pop punk has all the right to be included in this list if the music is good enough. And my ears tell me, it is. Don't go ahead and presume what I didn't say.
10. Minor Threat 9. Minor Threat 8. Minor Threat 7. Minor Threat 6. Minor Threat 5. Minor Threat 4. Minor Threat 3. Fugazi 2. Minor Threat 1. Minor Threat
@@Skyjumperkid sex pistols solo tiene 2 canciones buenas y un álbum mediocre. Se hicieron famosos por lo provocativos que fueron en ese país horrible, inmundo y desagradable, donde nunca sale el sol.
1.Dead Kennedys 2. Bad Religion 3. Black Flag 4. Misfits 5. Minor Threat 6.Youth of Today 7. Uniform Choice 8. Battalion Of Saints Lots of bands put out 1 great record. There are other good bands that are more on the Pop side. This is only my opinion of what I liked.
At least you know what the fuck you're talking about to put together 8 bands that belong up there. And I'm glad you didn't say the exploited. That band is one-dimensional as fuck.
1ramones 2tool 3 greenday 4offspring 5 the clash 6 rise against 7 sex pistols 8 beastie boys { early} 9 the clash 10 social distortion honorble mentions {they not quite punk but they're close} kiss the destroyers acdc? skrillex i know electronic metal thats why there in the honorable mentions pusa queen some songs?
Their music isn't overrated but I'd say their little character is (Fiend guy). Literally everyone wears their shirts but have no clue who the fuck they are :/
14. Bad Brains 13. Sex Pistols 12. The Damned 11. Green Day (Debut - Nimrod, American Idiot) 10. Suicidal Tendencies 9. D.R.I. 8. The Clash 7. Black Flag 6. Minor Threat 5. Rancid 4. Dead Kennedys 3. NOFX/Descendents (tie) 2. Misfits 1. Bad Religion
Leave it to watchmojo to play some of the worst songs by some of these bands. Should have played some Bad Brains off their self titled. And Misfits all the way at number 10? Some would argue they had a bigger impact than Black Flag even. And Social D are cool but I’d throw in Descendents, Minor Threat, Agnostic Front, or the Exploited over them.
Santee Cruzer Should have NOT covered something they know nothing about stick to Watchmojo where the assholes go.These are words from a 53 year old gen xer that's from the old school and NO not those asshole sex pistols either.
Even though alot of the replies seem to disagree with the comment's author you have to realize that The Misfits, Sex Pistols and Ramones Are the three pillars of punk and should be recognized As top 3, no matter what. Punk isn't just the music, but the mindset.
Where's Agnostic Front, Suicidal Tendencies, X Ray Spex, The Slits, Suicide, New York Dolls, Generation X, The Damed, Patty Smith…So many punk bands that most people have never heard of.
+Jessie Fox great stuff, but the less they are heard of, the less widespread the influence is, and (0:23) the premise is most influential. this is a well done list.
+Jessie Fox They are good, but I wouldn't call them pioneers in punk, although tendancies is more thrash now, but back at the start, definitely punk as hell.
I am inspired to rate my top 10 all time punk bands. Love to hear your reactions. 10 Black Flag 09 The Damned 08 The Ex 07 Gang of Four 06 The Stranglers 05 Dead Kennedys 04 Anti-Flag 03 Los Saicos 02 Poison Girls 01 Crass
@@QueenCeleste2 I did not know them that well but also no Sex Pistols, Subhumans so they are in good company. I just took 10 bands and my criteria were to choose for raw pure punk and or underrated punk. Check Crass - Bloody Revolutions or Poison Girls - Persons Unknown.
I used to live in a white bread, upper middle class tourist town and they had Sunday afternoon concerts at a pavilion downtown. Imagine my surprise when I saw flyers around town saying that the Misfits were playing downtown on Sunday. There was no picture of the band so I asked around town and everyone said "Yes, the Misfits are playing downtown on Sunday afternoon!" Well it turned out this band called "The Misfits" was a group of senior citizens that played ragtime music.
The Problem with American "Punk" is, its no Punk at all. Punk is about the Struggle with social and political Problems, but the "oppressed Masses" in America are mostly Black and the Black People have their own SubCulture, so Punk in America is left with, Teenage Problems. If you want to hear real Punk, try it with the Cockney Rejects, The Clash, Die Toten Hosen, Cock Sparrer, Stomper98 and more.
Blitz KriegFritz Because you are saying that black people are the only ones in the united states that are going through hard times. The bands you put are bitchin bands man, but there are struggles everywhere.
Skullybot I know that there are also other poor people in America, but Poverty is a real problem in the black community. 27,4% of the Black people in America are poor, theyre the most affected ethnic group in America, close behind them come the Latinos with 26,6%. The thing here is, when they want to call attention to their plight, they make Hip-Hop, mostly. Thats the Subculture, these ethnic Groups are mostly affiliated to, they wouldnt do Punk at all, at least the majority wouldnt. What I mean is, that America didnt contribute as much Punk bands to the Scene, than for example Britain or Germany, because during the whole 70s, 80s and early 90s, the White people in America were extremly whealthy, you can follow it in the pop culture, you know all those films about the suburbian idylls, with the perfect families and so. While during that time the 70s, 80s and 90s, unemployement raged through the industrial cities of Manchester, Liverpool and London and the rest of Europe, from this unemployement originated the Punk Scene and the Early Skinhead Scene. In Germany, the Punk wave in the 90s originated from the fall of the Berlin Wall. So in the end, the Rock'nRoll and Punk Culture, which is strongly affiliated to mostly white People, had no real themes, they had to find themes. Guess which themes, the suburbian Idylls, boredom and the chains of a perfect family portrait and high school problems. In the recent years we can see an increase of Punk Bands who are affiliated to Socialist Ideas, like Billy Talent, who walk more or less in the footsteps of the European Punk Tradition, of System Critics and Abolishment of the State. I can tell you why, because the Financial Crisis of 2008 which is since then going on, affected the White people as bad as the other communities in America, maybe even worse. So they start making system critical Music. To make a long story short, they started making real Punk music.
The Clash deserved number one. They were the first to actually diversify punk. The angry anarchist genre created by the Sex Pistols characterized punk as angry imbeciles with nothing important to say, but The Clash made punk more political, and more intelligent. Joe Strummer is the true king of punk.
omfg, said it once and now again...fuck the clash. reggae? rockabilly? WORLD MUSIC??? use of FUCKING SYNTHESIZERS?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!??! again, FUCK the clash.
the sex pistols are the better band only because they were more dedicated to the cause ,they were arrested and they could have been executed for treason due to their lyrical content
If you're going to name all Socal bands (except the Damned) then add TSOL, Suicidal Tendencies and Fear. Top 10 Socal punk bands in no particular order: Social Distortion, Black Flag, X, The Dickies, the Adolescents, the Minutemen, Agent Orange, TSOL, Suicidal Tendencies, Fear. Honorable mention: Circle Jerks, Vandals, Bad Religion.
In my opinion (not saying it’s objective at all). 1: the ramones 2: the misfits 3: the descendants 4: dead Kennedys 5: the clash 6: the damned 7: black flag 8: discharge 9: minor threat 10: the germs
In my time there was Discharge, GBH, Exploited, Peter and the testube babies, Toydolls, Upright citizens, Crass, Anti nowhere league, and do much more I liked Discharge the most.
The Sex Pistols are the most influential punk band! Nevermind the Bollocks is the greatest punk album ever made and one of the greatest of any genre. That album and that band has influenced more bands than anyone else on this list. I also know the Pistols were the reason most of the bands I listen too, were formed in the first place. Love The Clash and The Ramones but they ain't The Sex Pistols.
WatchMojo is a very credible source on this topic. They sure do know punk rock and how much punk is about ranking bands in order of top 10 influential punk band lists. Good job WatchMojo!
i cant believe no ones said anything about nofx, theyve been a band longer than any of these bands, and theyre still going strong, own their own record label and tour the world whenever they want. at least they dont sellout like half of these bands did
Social Distortion and Bad Religion ARE NOT punk, they are Alternative Rock, and I'm sorry but The Clash became mainstream years and years ago. Dead Kennedys only #6??? Black Flag only #5??? Where are The Cramps, Souixsie and the Banshees? Rancid? The Dickies? DO YOU EVEN UNDERSTAND WHAT PUNK IS?????
***** Oh come on, yelling at the Mojo is part of the fun of these lists ;-) ;-) ;-) ...and I still would have put The Cramps and Souixsie and the Banshees over Social Distortion and Bad Religion ;-)
But all of those bands you mention have at some point or other garnered critical acclaim from someone who can reasonably be said to be part of the establishment! They can't be punk!
the clash were offered loads of money before strummer passed away to reform for a one off gig that would have made them millionaires just like the pistols did later on their "filthy lucre" gig in London, they turned it down but joe strummer and jones did a benefit gig for the striking firefighters in acton town London for free, paul Simenon who wrote guns of brixton was awarded 250.000 pounds for a bassline that was "stolen" by fat boy slim on the song "dub be good to me", the money was given back to fat boy slim by paul Simenon stating that he was flattered and he preferred the money went to a charity of his choice, topper headon ran a drug rehabilitation centre in dover England with the royalties from clash songs, how does that make the clash mainstream?
My war you're one of them You say that you're my friend But you're one of them You don't want to see me live You don't want me to give 'Cause you're one of them My war you're one of them You say that you're my friend But you're one of them I might not know what a friend is All I know is what you're not 'Cause you're one of them My war you're one of them You say that you're my friend But you're one of them I have a prediction, it lives in my brain It's with me every day, it drives me insane I feel it in my heart, that if I has a gun I feel it in my heart, I'd want to kill some I feel it in my heart, the end will come Come on! My war you're one of them You say that you're my friend But you're one of them Tell me that I'm wrong Try to…
Well this is rather ironic. I doubt any true punk band of fan would feel the need to compete with each other. Who's the best or top 10? I don't think that shit really matters.
they are off the list where they belong...but, ion terms of perceived punk, they are iconic whereas some of the bands on this list I dont consider to be representative of punk as we now know it. They are definitely as punk as punk can be though, ill give you that one.
1. The Ramones 2. The Clash 3. Sex Pistols 4. Misfits 5. Iggy & The Stooges 6. Black Flag 7. Minor Threat 8. Descendents 9. Dead Kennedys 10. Bad Brains
Good grief... I LOVE The Offspring's 80s and 90s material, and I'm cool with Green Day's and NOFX's older stuff, but they DON'T BELONG ON THIS LIST. They're talented and have a nice sound and all, but they didn't have the same impact that bands like The Clash, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, etc. had. This list is celebrating those who literally PAVED the way for punk rock, innovated and helped DEVELOP the genre. Green Day, The Offspring, and NOFX had almost NO part in that. Now, if we want to talk about bands that NEED to be here but for some reason weren't included, let's talk about Crass and Minor Threat.
Capnsensible80 Exactly. Honestly, I don't get why so many comments are like, "Where's Green Day?" They don't need to be here. It's one thing to enjoy their music, it's another thing to say they're one of the greatest punk bands in history.
I'm disgusted that Minor Threat isn't on here. Talk about influential for only being a band for around 3 years. NOFX should definitely be somewhere on here too.
What if Iggy & the stooges didnt do music? No ramones no sex pistols no punk. Iggy created punk attitude and punk music in 1969 and he deserves to be at number one
