NIce. Thx. So they are making changes again? I played NA from 2016 to 2019, as the game went through lots of changes , fine tuning and focus shifting of what it wanted to be. In the end I gave up on the game as it simply took too long to do anything. (grinding, getting materials, mod upgrades etc - so mainly the MMO / Open world portion). I wish there was a game with similar style battles and less time needed to play it.

Now my naval "experience" comes mostly from Hornby and Bolitho books and a few movies. But why would they remove the possibility to hit the mast? It certainly should be difficult to bring it down with direct hits (not with chainshots) but definitely not impossible. Would be a really weird, artificial change for a "hardcore, realistic" game. I was hovering over this game on steam for years but the negative reviews and warnings about frustrating always pvp for new players put me off. Good to know there is PVE now but the reviews are still very bad. I quite enjoyed the older Age of Pirates games, which were really good on the ship part and horrendously bad at everything else (melee combat!). Seeing this game back when, i hade hoped for something like that. But the whole MMO approach, and now apparently extremely grindy open world gameplay (and 15 expensive DLC just reak of pay2win) kinda kills that possibility. The combat seems ok but i'm not sure about everything else. Oh and talking of Hornby and Bolitho: apparenly it was a REALLY bad idea to "angle away" from a broadside and show your back. One unlucky hit can go through the whole length of your cannon deck(s) and give everybody a pretty lousy day. Of course, you're playing the games combat mechanics but if that's the thing to do, it also doesn't scream "realistic".
@ChristianNelsonn
@ChristianNelsonn 2 года назад
What you said about hovering on this game for years and the negative reviews is something I relate to very well myself. Same as you, the game looked really interesting, but the constant negative feedback about "the devs ruining this game" kept me off it for years. Well, it is on sale now and the price was low enough that I thought even if it is as bad as they say it is I won't cry after the money. I've been playing it for about 5 days now I think. Started on the PVE server, but I found it lacked depth so moved on to PVP, which is definitely better. Haven't fought a battle against any real player yet though. All I can say is that I wish I'd bought the game a lot earlier. And that all this talk about the devs killing their own game and ignoring player feedback turns out to be largely bullshit. If anything I now think it's the players who kept review bombing the game on Steam because they didn't get their way are largely to blame for the game's decline in popularity. Not the other way around. Because those reviews are what kept me personally from getting the game for so long, and having finally played it now, it certainly does not deserve it. The people both in PVP and PVE are super helpful and eager to assist you while you learn the ropes. Every day I played the game there were people in chat just giving away free ships to newcomers so that they can progress easier. But It's been hard to ignore all the drama surrounding this new patch on Reddit for example. So I went into the devs discord to see what all the fuss is about. Having spent a few hours reading through the commentary, I'm honestly surprised the devs are still taking all the bullshit and drama flung around like champs. I mean yes, they respond in a rather passive-aggressive way from time to time, which is not OK, but reading through all the people say to them, I honestly can understand the frustration the devs must be suffering day in and out. There is a small but very vocal group on their discord constantly telling the devs that they don't know anything about their own game, they don't know how to balance anything, they don't know ships, they don't know history, they don't know anything at all about anything basically, and that it would be so much better if they only listened to the players. Well honestly, they do listen to the players. It's just that most of their ideas and logic is utter crap in the context of a game and from the perspective of gameplay and development. Like one of the changes apparently made smaller caliber guns more effective because they increased their damage a bit and the reload on bigger guns, effectively giving them better low alpha/high dps vs the large guns' high alpha/low dps. The devs' reasoning is that the ineffectiveness of these small caliber guns against larger ships made combat harder on new players who didn't spend 4 years grinding and collecting every single buff and rare wood to turn their ships into floating castles. It may not be the most realistic way the gun handles in real life (even though the devs made some very good points with historical data proving that 4-pdr guns could indeed penetrate more than 80cm of planking in real life) but it is a gameplay decision that I think was warranted. But the discord is all up in flames because how dare they make the 4-pdr more powerful! "It is so unrealistic" and that nothing stops players from turning their HMS Victory into machine guns with small cannons. One guy literally said that if the small caliber guns were so good in real life, navies would have decked out all their large 1st rates with 4-pdr guns. I mean OK dude, but in real life the entire pursuit is literally trying to make warfare unbalanced in your favour by making bigger and bigger guns and ships in order to overpower the enemy. And this was apparently to some extent the way it worked in the game, until the devs realized that extreme realism is hurting the gameplay, especially for newer players and that it needed to be balanced. Literally every game out there has a high dps vs high alpha mechanic baked into their combat mechanics. But no, 4-pdr in real life was apparently "useless" against bigger ships (it wasn't) and so it must be in the game because "realism". Also both types of guns still have their own uses. It's not like bigger guns are obsolete now. Another big controversy is caused by how the new patch makes angling a less viable tactic to stay immune from enemy fire and how the armour values of bigs ships were lowered. And that years of grinding they did is now useless. According to the devs, they overdid the original implementation of armour values back in 2018, and things got even worse as time passed with the introduction of rarer wood types. They are saying it was a mistake, and that it resulted in people building ships that were effectively ironclad ships that could bounce every shot with a tiny bit of angling. They are also saying that the situation is made worse because the kind of woods and upgrades that allowed people to build these invincible ships are not attainable by newer players, which in turn hurt their enjoyment of the game and player retention in the long term. But no. How dare they take away their invincible ships that practically allowed them to steamroll everything and everyone that wasn't also playing this game and grinding for the last 6 years? Honestly, the game is not doing well in terms of player numbers and the devs are trying to do something to save the game and make it more accessible for newer players. But they are having to fight against a small minority of veterans who played the game since early access and wish the game never changed. And all this effort to balance the gameplay, especially for newer players is "killing the game". So they review bomb the game and drag down its score on Steam, so that they can turn back and say "look what you did! your decisions are driving away players". Having witnessed the utter idiocracy rampant in the discord took me back to the times when I played World of Warships. I mean I hate the way that game is run honestly, with predatory gambling practices and the grind. Same can also be said for World of Tanks, which I don't play but is even more popular. For as long as I have played that game, which is about 6 years, people have been complaining about the devs not listening to the players and "killing the game", with at least one massive drama occuring each year. And in that time those games have only become more popular and turned the founder of that company into a billionaire. I just wish the devs of this game actually listened the player base LESS. It might be the only thing that could actually save the game. ------ Sorry for the massive wall of text, but seeing their discord today reminded of other games where the same toxic way a very vocal but small group of players constantly bitching and moaning about changes to gameplay mechanics "killing the game" for years, while said games actually got bigger and bigger. Hearts of Iron 4 is a very good example of this. I was one of the ones who hated the game and wanted it to go back to the overly complicated micromanagement hellhole that it was back in HoI3 and HoI2. The thing is, 99% of the players playing any given game are full of shit and have no fucking clue what works in a game and what doesn't. We don't have the tools or the qualifications or the experience the devs have to analyze player interaction. And most people are idiots anyway. The issue is that the dev team on this game is very small and they are directly involved with the players. There is no PR or social media team around them to shield them from the player base and their toxicity. And it takes a toll. After witnessing the shitshow on discord today, I honestly think those who played this game since the beginning and want everything to turn back to those "glory" days are the ones driving new people out and standing in the way of this game becoming something better. For the sake of the game, I hope the devs listen to the few people on discord less and do what they think is right.
