Navdeep's first driving lesson was all about building a strong foundation for safe and confident driving. The lesson began with the basics-familiarization with the controls inside the car. I walked Navdeep through the cockpit, pointing out the essential components. She adjusted the driver's seat, ensuring that her feet comfortably reached the pedals and his hands rested comfortably on the steering wheel. It was essential for Navdeep to feel at ease behind the wheel, and I could not emphasize that a relaxed posture was crucial for control.
Next came the steering wheel. Navdeep gripped it, and I explained the importance of positioning the hands correctly. I introduced Navdeep to the "9 and 3" hand placement on the wheel, emphasizing that it provided the best balance between control and comfort. Navdeep adjusted her hands accordingly, eager to get it right from the start.
With the seat and steering wheel sorted, it was time to tackle the mirrors. I explained the significance of having a clear view of the road behind and beside the car. She adjusted the side mirrors, aligning them to eliminate any blind spots. Then, they moved on to the rearview mirror first, ensuring Navdeep could see the entire rear window without straining. Navdeep was beginning to understand that driving was as much about being aware of your surroundings as it was about controlling the car.
After the initial setup, I introduced Navdeep to the pull-push steering method. I explained that this technique was crucial for precise and safe control of the vehicle. Navdeep listened attentively as I demonstrated the motion: a firm pull of the steering wheel with one hand while the other hand smoothly slid down, and then the push in the opposite direction. It was like a dance, a rhythm to be mastered.
