In this video, I’ll be showing you a typical driving lesson done on the first day. The areas covered are cockpit drills, mirror adjustments, seat adjustments, steering adjustments, and the controls of the car that are commonly used.
In this video, you will see Olly, on the first day of his driving lesson. Just to let you know, Olly has never driven a car in his life. His goal in this driving lesson is to be a safe and confident driver. His concern about driving is to crashing into another car.
I have taken him to a suburb that has low traffic flow and it’s a 50km/hr zone. This place is an ideal location for a beginner like Olly.
We started by learning the basics thing when you get into a car. Like seat and mirror adjustment, showing him the controls such as wipers, and indicator switch. These are the initial part of learning to drive. Then showed him the warrant of fitness label and the car registration. These are the legal requirement for driving a car in New Zealand.
Olly is a visual learner, therefore, in order for him to master a certain task, l had to demonstrate to him to understand the control system of the car.
Once the initial topics were covered, we moved into basic maneuvers such as starting up and turning off the car (in our case powering up and powering down the car), moving off, and stopping the car. One of his challenges is to steer the vehicle correctly. He struggled a lot with steering and getting the car to go in the intended direction. Initially, it looked easy for him but when he took over the steering wheel it was a different story altogether. There was no sense of coordination between the eye hand and foot.
This is where I explained the pull-push steering method and the hand-over-hand method. These are the building blocks of learning to drive.
So, let’s take a look at how the first day of his driving went.
