Jordan seems to be mis-remembering, his route planning from Vegas back to Denver showed a total elapsed time of 14h23m without Rivian, and just 10 minutes longer at 14h33m with Rivian. Do you really think 10 minutes over a 14.5 hour journey is too much to route you to it's own network? Plus, the route skipped Green River!! This whole 'issue' is making a mountain out of a molehill.

A friend of mine was doing route planning for a CO trip from ATX in her R1S. It started off by recommending she stop at some level 2's along the way, and refused to see Tesla despite my adjusting the settings to show Tesla. Basically everything was broken kind of like Out of Spec's experience. I went and tried it in my R1T from the same address on the previous software (the version before the new "cell shaded" update), and it worked flawlessly. I then had her do the route planning on her phone. Worked flawlessly. I had her do a full reboot of the car after an infotainment reboot didn't fix it. Not sure if that worked, but I told her to trust the app - not the car. I think that this is a bug in the software rather than some lack of features or something intentional.

Thanks for this update. It's a great topic but I don't think it reflects the overall charging experience, but rather it focused on critical feedback. If that was your goal, fair enough but i want to share that this feedback doesn't represent my overall experience. In the May-June time-frame I did 3 round trip roadtrips from the Bay Area, CA: Los Angeles, Denver and Vancouver BC. The Denver trip, on the way out I went through Salt Lake City and on the return trip I went through Las Vegas. Overall i hit 48 charging stops and took notes on each stop. I stopped at Rivian, Tesla, Electrify America, EV Go, EV Connect, and Shell Recharge. My first trip to Los Angeles i had only 30% success rate of having a "clean" charging experience. My second trip out to Denver I had a 70% clean experience and my trip to Vancouver I had a 90% clean experience. What I mean by "clean" is that i simply pulled into the charging station and I had no issues. I learned a ton. My basic take-aways were the following: (1) Believe the Rivian recommendations. Yes, i've experienced the feedback you described, but believing you can outsmart the software will get you into trouble .. but if you want to avoid L2 chargers, simply de-select those. (2) Rivian Adventure Network is the best charging experience you will have. Telsa & EA tend to be in better locations, but issues with adapters and numerous EA issues (many i have found workarounds or optimizations) I, statistically and emotionally, have had a superior experience at RAN. (3) My experience on the routes described, is that the charging networks are vastly underutilized. Of my 48 stops, i encountered 1 charging stop (Tesla in Langley, British Columbia at 5pm Friday) that was full, and 1 stop that became full after I was charging (RAN Barstow California), the rest had only 2 or 3 vehicles at most. Typically there was myself plus one other. As for the Barstow stop, it is in a super cool location. The Tesla one in Barstow is out of town and was practically empty. I could write some interesting but subjective paragraphs on "Ethos of Charging", How to Optimize Your Electrify America experience. selecting your charging station and tips on using adapters. The theme around the Ethos discussion would "how to make the your charging experience a positive experience on your road trip". If you are interested, Jose or Jordan, i'd be happy to do some follow-up with you.

I did trip planning on my R1T after your trip and it did not go to RAN chargers unless I said I want RAN. I think they saw your video and changed the algorithm. That's done on servers so they don't need to do a update. I just tried the App to go from FC to Vegas. It did send me to RAN. One of the RAN's had a B rating. I then selected Tesla and EA and that was fine. I then tried again without selecting preferences and it did not use RAN. One of the Tesla had a B.

We are going to Myrtle Beach,SC from Northern Virginia. I mapped out the route and also used Tesla supercharger network. With my game plan, I'll see what the Rivian route planner will do. Since there are no RAN chargers on this route, I plan to use Tesla with EVgo as backup.

Generally speaking, you want the vehicle to precondition as long as possible, because (a) you want time for the target battery temperature to equalize across the cells, and (b) moving heat is more efficient when doing it slowly.

How awesome would it be if we could unlock a nerd 🤓 icon to a tab that shows all the nerd data without going into service mode. A place where we could have access to advanced settings such as setting min. SOC at chargers and destination. Where we could manage lists of favorite chargers and chargers to avoid (…like Green River for example). Where we could manually precondition, change tire sizes or calibrate speed. That would be amazing. 🤩

I think in most instances, drivers are going for the closed ecosystem experience, firstly driving a Rivian and using RAN, secondly there's also there's the cost factor. Rivian charges 20% less than competitors in most cases.

In my experience, the rivian route planner does not ever update the status of the number of in use stalls while in route. I have always had to stop and start new routes to get updated site status.

I agree with these constructive criticisms. Please ask before routing to a charger behind me. Please show % in nav. Please update nav range and charge duration in real time when charging.

The load sharing needs to be fixed with a v2 infrastructure and fix the 300kW shared between 3 stalls. This version of loadsharing is not acceptable going forward.

Recently went to RAN I use on roadtrips and for the first time it was close to full. Charging performance was so abysmal that I unplugged and went across the street even though more expensive. I didn’t know RANs had such a serious design flaw that limits charging when busy. Ironically, as more Rivians hit the road and/or they open up the network, RANs may start getting C ratings…

You have no evidence it is prioritizing RAN, you are speculating. It actually prioritizes high quality chargers, which RAN is. Your mistake was keeping L1 and L2 chargers enabled in your map for route planning and trying to compensate by disabling RAN. Your next mistake was plugging into a 150 Kw chargers leaving the fast 350 for Kyle for no good reason.

My guess they are pushing to RAN to help decrease cash burn. Now that they have a fleet they can skew they can funnel more money into their business. I don’t dislike the strategy but it needs to be tuned right so it doesn’t degrade the experience. They know the SoC of all the vehicles headed to a RAN they can plan for what their shares speeds will be and not slow people down like crazy

@@ahbushnell1 EA has had station status in their app for years. Why Rivian hasn't subscribed to their API is a mystery but by EA's lack of success in other areas, I'm not surprised. Maybe because they charge for an API key and probably rate limit it terribly and the info isn't accurate anyway because EA rarely knows when their stations are broken, I'm surmising.

Why cant they figure out the thermals for charging speeds, such a glaring problem and a benchmark they fall short on. Do you know if Gen 2 fixes the thermal problems in regards to keeping the battery cool? Why wouldn't they fix this issue in Gen 2 its one of the biggest customer facing issues with the vehicle.

@@riviantrackr Makes no sense at all why they didn't address this with Gen 2, they obviously know its a problem. They really just need to add more cooling plates to the battery enclosure. The fact that they redesigned the enclosure and didn't add more cooling plates is ridiculous.

Just be thankful you don’t live in Canada, where the navigation is borderline unusable. And honestly ABRP isn’t much better and has the same routing issues and poor logic that the native navigation has. I’d say over 50% of the DCFC on the west coast are undiscoverable, as the networks aren’t even included… but I have all of the American networks listed that we don’t have here…
