Navigation Plotting is an essential skill for working in the maritime industry. This video is an introduction to some of those concepts. If you've spent lots of time on the water, but have not pursued a professional license, you should consider yourself a candidate for an Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV) 6-Pack license. This license allows you to charter vessels with up to 6 paying passenger and is the first step to a career in the maritime industry, full-time or part-time!

Under perfect conditions of Constant Set and Drift (which never really happens) there will be no Zigzag. You will just be pointing in the “Cheated” direction but travel down the plotted line such that at any time you take a fix you would be on that projected course line, not just at the end of an hour.

Pls show me the methods to change the chart from small scale to big scale. Example: I draw a LOP in a small scale chart and through a big scale chart. How to connect the LOP between to chart with different scale. Tks

Yes, but your drift speed is 0.8 knt for 45 min. (not for an hour). It will be interesting you to explain the reverse problem(when we look for the True Course. And you can add a drafe. So then the chart will be a bit more realistic :)

+Venci Ganev for the sake of discussion he was using a 1 hour triangle.

Correct ...it is simple to just base everything on an hour ... the math then becomes easier ....8 knots =.8 miles, etc.

What if the distance from the 0745 position to the lighthouse would be more than 5 miles? For example, 7 miles. Should we just connect 0745 position and the lighthouse with a line and calculate CTS, or what? It takes 1,4 hour to go from 0745 to the lighthouse with the speed 5 kts, so we can draw the line and increase the Drift by 1,4 so it will be 0,8*1,4=1,12kts and we draw it and then calculate CTS to the lighthouse??

How to do this for big ships that travel with an average speed of 23knots? Is there any practicable method?
