I did 7 deployments as an o-level AE, these folks along with engineering are literally the hardest working people I saw on my deployments. The maintain and operate the cat and arresting gear. After flight ops, they take a shower, eat and they’re back at work. Saw them sleeping on the O-3 after flight got ops alot. My hat is off to them.

My shipped out this morning. He chose ABE while presented with many other jobs. He really wanted to be an active sailor. His oldest sister is a Chief in the Navy and her husband a Senior Chief. I could not be more proud of them and in visiting my daughter in Norfolk, all of the men and women who serve in the Navy. As an AF guy, I have had to get used to a new language. But seeing sailors in their function and lives, you make a patriot citizen proud. God speed sailors!

My dad was an ABE senior chief, told me he loved his job but he would NEVER recommend this to anyone. Long dangerous hours.

My son JUST joined up as an ABE :( I wanted him working on P8s. He spoke with a CPO got super excited and chose this rate!! I just want to know where he is going to sleep being assigned to a carrier. Will he sleep in the same bunks the squadrons sleep when they deploy or will he have better space having to always live there?

This video shows the fun side of this rate. However this rate is the worst in the NAVY in my opinion. Super long days, Greasy af, hardly any down time, after a 15+ hour day of flying, guess what no time off because you have to also fix anything broken or do preventative maintenance. I recommend anyone thinking about this job to strongly reconsider another job and do not go in undesignated. If you ever decide to get out of this rate they tell you no because it so undermanned they can not afford to let you go, essentially trapping you into doing this job. Also after you do your time, the knowledge you gained on how to fix hydraulics does not equate to many professions outside in the real world. Also this rate tends to attract some not so nice people (not everyone).

Long hours, absolutely not. Unless you think 12 hrs on and 12 hrs off is long. Back in the day, there wasn’t designated hours. That changed long ago after analyzing that sailors were getting injured after staying up long periods of time without sleep. And chow will always be available. If the crew doesn’t make it down to the mess decks, lunch boxes will be brought up to feed the crew.

Don't get too excited. You're going to wish you didn't. On my ship we're known as the greasy boys. And when you're out and everyone else is getting 12 on 12 off and you're pulling 18 hour + days, you rethink your decisions.

We didn’t have females either in V2 during G.W. Deployment in 97’. But I will say that a majority of females coming in as ABE’s today, have more drive and integrity than most of the men. I hear more complaints from guys about the rate than women.

@@leeannareynolds8779 I would definitely recommend it. Aviation is the way to go. The only thing is it is very hard to get a job in this field when you get out of the Navy. Get your A&P liscense before you get out if you want to still work on aircraft.

It’s a better explanation than most videos out there. You’re not going to get a full explanation of the ABE rate in a 2:30 minute video. That’s something you’ll have to experience while active. I’ll say that it’s not for those that don’t want hard work added to their job. If you want to get by easy, choose an Admin position, if that suits you.
