I remember first watching this video before I got sent to great lakes. Feels a bit strange but nice to actually understand the terminology used in the video. Also, heads up, at 2:05 he says that the enlistment bonus is nearly 40K. Last I checked, when I signed on it was 38K but that's before taxes. (May of 2020) You get 1/3 after completing power school and the other 2/3 upon graduating prototype. Don't spend it just yet when you do get it, because if for some reason you fail out or are disqualified, you'll have to pay that money back. Also, at 2:10 he says that the reenlistment bonus is 100k, not exactly true. While it can be up to 100k, because electricians have a higher retention rate and tend to stay in the navy longer, there's less incentive to offer such a high reenlistment bonus, and again, it's still going to be taxed. While I don't know the actual amount right now (As of November 11th, 2022) expect something more along the lines of 60k or 70k pre-tax. Not saying you shouldn't star reenlist, just be more aware of the reality of your decision. There are pros and cons.

There was a big shortage of highly skilled and competent electricians starting in the early 1980s. Even to this very day, many electricians are still not capable of doing automation, controls, etc. because many tend to hide away in residential roles. Too afraid of having to deal with subsystems, motors, and control diagrams.

Met with my recruiter in late '68. Saw flyer about Navy Nuclear Program and asked about it. Recruiter about had an orgasm, as that would be a double credit for him. Went to boot camp San Diego, company 69-123. When they found that my Father was retired ETC, got assigned to battalion MAA. Then attended IC "A" school and then Motion Picture Operator School. Then 4 months on a destroyer as ICFN, awaiting Nuclear Power School. NPS Mare Island class 70-1. Best described as a 4 year engineering school done in 6 months, without electives. Lost one class mate who decided to see how much blood was in his veins. Lost another who jumped from 3rd story after assigned "tree and bush" (evening studies). Then to NPTU Idaho, A1W prototype. Lost about 1/4 the class due to drug busts. Now IC3. Found out the previous class was the last one where IC could be reactor operators. Off to subnarine school Groton in early '71. Was pretty much a lame session, as we mostly watched submarine movies. A couple of us wandered over to the regular submarine school classes. We reported that they were teaching outdated information, so we got tasked with rewriting the curriculum. Then next 19 years riding SSBN's out of New London (errr, Groton). Made 24 patrols. Retired in '89 as EMCS(SS). Other intersecting stories at NSSF New London and SUBRON 10 staff (became Sublant submarine battery inspector and SUBLANT 6L16 oxygen generator inspector, and Propulsion Examining Board member) The civilian recruiters were chomping at the bits to find a job for me. Ended up in Houston with a 600K job for 25 years. Now retired and managing a Renaissance Faire in central Texas. Life is good.

Yas Garcia boot camp was cake looking back, but in the moment it was very tough. A school and power school have been a rollercoaster, and I’m off for prototype in a few weeks as long as I pass my final exams (haven’t failed any tests yet)

How hard is A school? i enlisted as a nuc and i leave february 1, want to know what to expect
@hudsonevans485
@hudsonevans485 4 года назад
Yas Garcia so for Nukes there is a very high attrition rate. Almost 50%, but that includes people that didn’t make it through boot camp. Focus on getting physically prepared for boot camp and then focus on A school once you get there. You won’t need to have any prior knowledge before going, you just need to have a good work ethic. Everything will be taught at the most basic level and then progressively get harder. It sounds intimidating but it’s really not as long as you work hard and put in the effort. So for now enjoy your freedom, maybe make a little money before you ship off and just try to enjoy life and get in shape. Also boot camp starts at the most basic level of workouts and academics so don’t worry about how challenging it’s going to be. Don’t quit and you’ll make it through

What type of materials do EM use is it the same as residential and commercial electricians like emt conduit and romex or do they use rigid pipe and do they follow an electrical wire code like the low voltage (black red blue) and high voltage (brown orange yellow)?

Naval Elctrical distribution is different from civillian, for starters its un-grounded. The Elctrical Lines except 4160V(carriers) do not need hard sheathes, infact in some places it would be conterproductive as even a steel beast like a Nimitz class carrier does flex very slightly. In general EMNs deal with main power 4160 VAC, 450VAC for a motors and a lot of other equipment, and your usual 120VAC for lighting systems(includes personal items on this system.). Electrical wires are labels with metal tags. So to answer your question, the answer is no, and no, and not grounded.

Got booted out of nptu. Best move that ever happened. Met nukes in the real world. A little odd to say the least. Absolutely no people skills. Smart people, just not emotionally balanced. Imagine hours upon hours of engineering duties, studying, reading, learning, training, standing watch. Now imagine being under water for months on end; or being on a carrier with thousands of people doing the same thing every day for months. I did my 6, took my small bonus (at that time). Got married, raised a family. Thankful I went to nuke school, but greatful I didn't become a fully fledged nuke. Money isn't everything. These videos are navy enlistment ads.
