That's why I left the Navy if I had been married I could live in base housing and had a family life. I don't recall anyone living in barracks on the base from my ship. I was in japan. A few guys got together and rented an apt not sure what it cost. Being overseas and being single was the pits.
Starting as an E3 when I was homeported in Charleston SC, I was living off base and getting BAQ (Basic Allowance for Quarters - that's what it was called back then) and BAS (Basic Allowance for Subsistence). I was on an SSBN. Each boat only had five 2 man rooms in the barracks... so the math worked in favor of having to live off base, which I loved. To make it even sweeter... my roommate was on the opposite crew from me (I was Gold crew he was Blue). So in the 2+ years we were roommates, we never actually spent a single minute together in our apartment. We'd only see each other on the boat for a couple days every three months down in Kings Bay during turnover. Financially the deal was; before going to sea I would give him my half of the rent for the three months I'd be at sea, and visa-versa for when he was going to sea. Then he would pay 100% of the electric, telephone, and cable bill while I was at sea... and then me do the same for when he was at sea. It was the best! Having a roommate that you don't live with.
I'm glad I joined the air force. When your shift is over on a friday you can go downtown and have a brewski. When your on a ship is on the middle of the ocean somewhere, go back to your bunk.
beerborn well thats good in the Navy give you more travel opportunities and not having that chance of being in small rural areas like Minot ND i know thats the most hated or least desired place to go. if travel is one of the things you want or like AF might not be where you wanna go higher chance being across seas specially if your rate has sea time ull be on ship then port then back out til that deployment is over. i hope you dont get a base in the middle of no mans land
Cool. When I was in the Navy a single E5 still didn't get BAH. That was one of the reason that I left. I was pissed that married personnel doing the same job that I did got more money. From what I heard the Navy realized that some single personnel got around that by setting up fake marriages. It would be cool if the Navy could push BAH down to E4's that are single. For me it really sucked living on a ship. I got to the point where I took my own pay and rented an apartment. I think that the Air Force pays BAH to single E4's. At this point they can move off base out of the barracks. For the Army I think that it's E6. But trust me when I say that living in the barracks is much better than living on a ship. Barracks life is similar to a college dorm.
You're not too bright are you? Married personnel obviously got more since their significant others couldn't live in the barracks dumbass. The barracks are for single soldiers.
You guys missed my entire point. I ended up getting 5 corporate job offers and left the Navy. Perhaps I would have stayed back then if they offered housing money for single's assigned to a ship. Towards the end of my 4 years on the ship I got so frustrated with living on the ship that I paid for an apartment out of my salary. Junior enlisted married personnel got paid for housing. And as I stated before, several were in phony Vegas style marriages just to get the benefits.
I think that the Navy eventually realized that they were losing good single junior enlisted personnel over the housing situation for those assigned to ships. They probably also realized that there were many fake marriages. So now the Navy offers housing money for single E5 and above even if assigned to a ship. They also provide barracks style living on base for E4 and below ships personnel.

In my experience, living on a ship requires a lot of discipline. I say this because of the food in the , and it's free. You will need to dedicate a lot of time working out, or develop mental fortitude so you don't give in to the temptation of free food. Then again, this is coming from a guy who, for 22 years of his life, was not of the financial status to be eating 3 meals per day.
Live on base in barracks remain on ship! make plenty of money stand watch for other's if your rate (GM2) allows for this lucrative possibility, but don't expect to find one for yourself. E-5 was amazing, hazardous duty Pay!, duty free mail! all excellent. save leave till the end of your enlistment.
Hey, man ive been watching your videos on and off for the last few months and last week i just got my airr rescue contract and i was wondering if i get E4 right out of A school, how fast can i get E5 and i also was told that you can get BAH as a E4 if you have a surface warfare pin...
Not sure if you get E4 right out of A school and ranking up depends on the % for your rate and how well you do on your evaluation/test. BAH is only for E5

What rank would I start out in since I would have an associates. Just curious. I tried looking online but don't really see much about it. Thanks
E-3 I sworn in last week myself and have a BA. if you have over 60 college credits or have a degree its E-3. You could go officer if you have a 3.0 overall gpa and your BA. I myself decided to go enlisted for various reasons but good luck in your decision.
There aren't really any bases that are labeled "reservists". If you are a reservist you will only be at your command one weekend out of the month, unless they need you for other tasks.
If I'm assigned to fleet you mentioned you can either live on the ship or find a roommate ... Do I have to have a roommate or can I find an apartment by myself if I can afford it?? Thanks.

Yea you can have your phone and during off hours you can play video games if there is an available TV or if you have the portable brief case gaming system
I'm currently in the process of joining the military, ARMY or NAVY NAVY or ARMY. Either way I go in E-3. Some people have told me that it is not as easy to rank up in the NAVY as it would be in the ARMY. How true is that? If you were a recruiter, based on your personal experience as a seaman plain and simple what would you tell me to convince me to join the NAVY?
Well I'm no recruiter, to be honest recruiters only care about signing people up. Whether that means bending the truth a bit and hyping things up or not.. In the Navy you rank up through your overall work evaluation and taking a test for your specific job.
Basically. There’s always a chance you can be placed at a shore based command first but for the majority of people will be on a ship their first contract
single sailors get screwed. seabees you have to live in barracks till E5. they let some E4s get BAH as long as your not a shit bag and you have your warfare pin but they have to keep rooms filled at the barracks so they may not approve it. got to have a lease and at least a grand in savings and a vehicle at least to be considered for BAH. if you join the bees count on being in the barracks for at least 5 years if you are single and remain single. i know a gay sailor and a lesbian sailor married and got BAH. it was obvious that they married for bah. i wouldnt suggest doing that.
I was Army reserve and went right in the Navy after coming home from boot. Very hard to do. After learning things the Army way, duh, the Navy is totally different. I had to do Navy boot and 2 other prior military got booted out. It was too hard to learn a different military. It took me 3 years to get Navified.
They navy won’t pay for it, you’ll have to come out of pocket for it. That’s why I recommend creating multiple streams of income for yourself while you are
