I feel glad to say I was trained by a Special Forces Veteran in the U.S> Navy when receiving my Open Water Cert. in SCUBA. He yelled at me a lot LOL. Great instructor and one thing he told me during training that I will never forget is that it only takes one tablespoon of water to drown. One tablespoon to go down the wrong pipe and you can lose the only thing to save you and that is your consciousness .

It always seems strange to me when people drown, especially in pretty calm water. I've grown up swimming in the bayou's and the gulf here in Louisiana where visibility is nil and lot's of trash at the bottom. I was told as child by an old Cajun man to never fight against the water, to always stop, relax and float, and if caught in a riptide, take your time and swim parallel to the shore. Wise words that saved my life many times. When you panic all bets are off. This such a senseless tragedy, my heart goes out to her family.

From what l know she rented the boat for 3 hrs. And when she didn’t return the employees went to look for them they found her son asleep on the boat and he said his Mama went in the water and didn’t come up. So sad. This lake has a history of drowning people. It is quicksand bottom, trees underwater, current and just a feeling of death in this area. I hated when I went out there in the early 80's it should be signed with NO SWIMMING nO ONE IS EVER OUT THERE ANYMORE TO MANY ACCIDENTS WITH ALL THE JUNK IN THE WATER. Naya failed to obey the most basic of boating and swimming rules. 1. NEVER go boating or swimming alone. ALWAYS have another adult (not a child) with you, at least. 2. ALWAYS wear a life vest. 3. NEVER swim or dive when you don't know what is below the surface of the water. 4. Follow the instructions and the cautions that are posted for your protection.

Every time I’ve ever rented a boat or paddle boat, the rental company gave us life jackets they insisted we wear. At the very least, it was the law that children had to keep them on at all times. I witnessed someone being stopped and fined for not doing so. Many companies actually put the life vests on us. Maybe the rules are different there? Very tragic and my heart goes out to the little boy and his family.

I'm always saddened by these avoidable tragic deaths so easily preventable. No life vest, no other adult with them, no awareness of the body of water she was in. My dad was a scout master, and he drilled into his scouts and his kids to never go it alone, never go hiking without a whistle, water, and a compass, etc. Yet, time after time, I hear about inexperienced AND very experienced boaters, hikers, back country skiers, divers, doing the most foolish things, like a couple of experience back country skiers who went out for the day with no avalanche gear, beacons, shovels, or anything but their skis. They were caught in an avalanche, and had not even told their babysitter where they were going, just telling her they were going skiing. They'd even left their cell phones in their car. S tragic, and left a 3 year old son an orphan. Another case was of a very experienced diver who went alone (never!) on a relatively shallow dive (40') to spearfish. Again, he to,d no one where he was going, had over 20 years of experience, and went alone. He got tangled in kelp, had no diving knife (always!) or other safety gear, and drowned. Always be safe, be cautious, and remember the rules always apply. So sad for this lovely young woman and her son.

I hate to say it, but Naya must not have been aware of the basic safety rules when going out on a lake like that. She was foolish to go out alone with just a child with her. I read through some of the comments here and there's people who actually think "the lake" is responsible for warning people. I disagree. It should be common sense not to go out there alone and to take precautions and wear a life vest! None of us can know exactly what happened, but from what I gathered, she must have got off the boat to swim with her little boy and the boat, not being anchored, started to drift with the current. We know she used every bit of strength in her to get the boy back on that boat, but she must have been exhausted with not enough energy to pull herself back up. Still, it seems odd that she wouldn't then just try to hang on to the boat. Maybe she did hang on for as long as she could. I'm curious about those last hours and moments that led to her drowning. This story is very sad and really, the whole thing could have been avoided. I'm glad the child survived at least. This will haunt him throughout his entire life. I only know of Naya's name but I'm not too familiar with her work because I've never been a fan of Glee. Oddly, I watched a show called Sugar Rush on Netflix just last night. Naya was a guest judge on the show and I noticed the episode was dedicated to her. Thanks for going out there. How eerie. You couldn't pay me to go out there and swim alone in a big lake like that! Didn't anchor the boat, went swimming with the boy, she not wearing a life vest. The wind took the boat away from them. She panicked and somehow got the boy back in the boat. The boat got away from her again. She didn't have enough strength to get back to it. RIP

If only Naya after saving her son, instead of going under is turned over on her back & floated untill recovering from saving her son, Naya could of rested built up energy then went for the boat. But when people panic this is what happens, the key is to save any one from downing, is not to panic, look at that guy who was at sea for days lying on is back & was found, surely if Naya done the same she would of been saved just like her son was in the boat. Rip Naya untill gods resurrection day comes.

At one point in the video you can hear the call of a mourning dove. you can also hear a crow, and crows are associated with death. From what I have heard, Naya was the sweetest, kindest, most welcoming of the Glee cast members. So sad that she ended up this way, and that what was meant to be a fun day for her and her son will forever be the day that he lost his mother. I agree that they shouldn't allow swimming in this lake, the conditions are way too hazardous. If they allow boating it should be required that you have on your life jacket at all times. Something so simple would have saved Naya's life. A beautiful, talented, caring young woman whose life was senselessly cut short.

I've fished and camped at Piru a few times. The last time I fished there, I was with a friend of mine. He owns a small motorboat with a 15 hp Johnson outboard motor. It was a weekday. We were one of the few boats out on the lake. While fishing the north end of the lake, a Santa Ana wind picked up. Within seconds the lake turned from a mill pond into a washing machine. We were on the middle of the lake when the wind caught us. We reeled up our lines and headed back to the marina. The whole lake was white caps, and small water spouts. The waves were to big for our little Minnesota lake boat. These lakes are unlike the ocean in that, in rough seas one must zig zag through the swells. The waves in these lake are high, and small. You've got to hit them head on. The boat rides up the crest of the wave then, "WHAM!", the bow of the boat slams down into the trough of the next wave. On this afternoon, the wind was to high, and the waves were just to big. We were at a risk of being swamped. I was on the motor. I turned toward the shore where the swells were smaller, and followed it all the way back to the safety of the Marina. Notice the small booth at the marina. This is where the dockmaster sits and keeps an eye on things. On this day, the dockmaster was a rotund Mexican man in his late 20's/early 30's. He reminded me of the Rick Moranis character in the first Ghostbusters movie. While heading out he came out of his little booth and talked our ears off as we walked the dock to our boat. He was a very nice fellow. I felt bad as we pulled away while he continued to jabber away. After our brush with death, when we pulled in, on cue, he came out of his little booth and met us down at our slip. "Boy! I saw you guys with my binoculars! They're not strong binoculars but I could still see you guys pretty good. When you guys were in the middle of the lake I didn't think you were gonna make it. I thought I was gonna have to call Sheriffs Rescue! I've had to call Sheriffs Rescue a few times, you know... There was this one time...(Well, you get the idea). As he jabbered on, he helped us with our gear, then walked us all the way up the dock. The episode was long and exhausting. My friend and I are pretty good to always watch the weather. We've been fishing together since the mid 1970's. That lake is small. When a Santa Ana hits it, or any wind for that matter, it is sudden and strong. We've not been back to that lake since. As for swimming, even a slight breeze can make things difficult. The small swells will slap you in the face over and over again. For the novice swimmer, this is likely to induce a panic. Also, even in the summertime, I wouldn't call that water warm. The wind surfers wear wetsuits for a reason. My thinking is, while her son was in the water, she saw a sudden wind gust heading toward the boat. In the rush to save her son, she lost her leverage and fell in. That boat looked to be high profile. By the time she surfaced the wind had pushed the boat farther and faster than she could swim. If she was fully clothed. There's just no way. A terrible tragedy. RIP Naya.

Unfortunately, these calm-looking waters can be deceptive. Also, she did not anchor the boat or where any kind of float. Just sad though at what happened
