Thank you for helping make trans history accessible to people who wouldn’t know how to or be able to seek this info out on their own!! I first learned about this in Susan Stryker’s book “Transgender History: The Roots of Today’s Revolution”! Its a good read I highly recommend it. We need to do more to make sure our queer and trans youth learn about their roots!!!!

I love this video and that you spoke about this. Being German, i have a constant mix of shame and pride for my country. I wish German could rebuild such a good reputation for the LGBT+ community and help to push acceptance and kindness into future generations.

Have you read Neurotribes by Steve Silberman? It's a book about autism history and also talks a lot about how much was lost bc of the Nazis (like Hans Asperger's really good work on good, humane, strength-based education for autistic folks). It can be difficult to read but it's so informative

This is a great video, I hope you don’t mind if I add some extra info! While not being history, I think it’s good to know :) I’m from Germany, and we actually still have a version of the “Transvestitenausweis”! It’s called “Ergänzungsausweis“ (supplementary ID). It’s issued by the German society for trans* and intersex people. While it may sound like a problematic thing, many trans people actually use and recommend it. It has the number of your government-issued ID, so it can definitely be linked to you, but it’s states your real name, pronouns and a short explanation. It (roughly) says that the official ID may display a different name and gender, but you are in fact the same person. Because changing your name and gender marker is one hell of a process, a lot of trans folk use this so they don’t have to argue with every cashier or cop they come across. It’s the size of a credit card, so it fits easily into your wallet and can be handed over together with your ID without being very obvious to anyone else. I actually think this is a good system, because while trans issues are still a huge taboo in Germany (at least where I live), many people accept this document without much of a fuss. I apologise for the long comment, I just didn’t know there was a historical precedent for the Ergänzungsausweis and I got really excited. And maybe someone thinks it’s interesting too :)

I find that topic really interesting. For ages I only ever associated queer history with Stonewall, the gay rights movement and stuff that happend in the States. For the longest time I didn't know anything about Hirschfeld or the institute or the advances in trans medicine that happend there, even though I am from Germany and trans. I’ve heard about the queer community in Germany, but I didn’t know how big it was! I love learning about history and I find this fascinating! Thank you for making this!

A few things that were not mentioned here: Hirschfeld was on the Nazis' list for severeal reasons: 1) Hirschfeld was Jewish 2) Hirschfeld was homosexual 3) Hirschfeld did research on homosexuality and transsexuality/transvestism. The latter was considered a sign of homosexuality at that time, but it was not punishable in itself. Even though the students in Berlin showed up with a paled bust of Hirschfeld at the book burning, he was only one of many mostly Jewish authors whose books were burnt in all of Germany. After 1933, most trans people hid their identity out of fear for being suspected of being homosexual. In fact, the only trans people that ended up in prison/concentration camp were homosexuals. The transvestite pass remained valid even in Nazi Germany and in some cases, name changes and gender affirming surgery was possible.

Great video. I have studied this in depth and weimar germany was actually pretty progressive and accepting. In terms of birth control and things Germany was way ahead of it's time. Is a shame how it all went downhill so quickly and is a stark reminder that we shouldn't ever take our rights for granted as they can be taken away so quickly.

I love seeing more people talk about this!! I did my final speech in my comm class on the Institut für Sexualwissenschaft and I don't think anyone in my class knew about it beforehand. If anyone wants to learn more the book Gay Berlin by Robert Beachy goes in-depth on the history of LGBT rights in Germany starting even before Magnus Hirschfeld. The Pink Triangle is also a classic talking about Nazi persecution of queer people and it's written by a gay man who emigrated from Germany to escape the Nazis. Thank you again for helping teach our history!

I hate how relevant this is now again. ‘Do not repeat the same mistakes’ this was from three years ago and I feel like things have gone so, so downhill. I remember a few of my history teachers saying something about this in high school but I don't think it was in our books. I'm from the US.

I also studied WW2 in depth in high school and had zero idea about this. In fact they didn't cover book burnings at all... I'm really enjoying (that might be the wrong word) this series though. I like to learn about LGBTQIA+ history, as much as it is generally depressing & feels hopeless. It helps me feel connected to my community though.

Also this topic was in an episode of Transparent, which was the only reason I had ever heard of it

Thanks for covering the topic! I'm german and even I didn't learn about that in school, although we probably talked about our nazi history even more in depth than you. I learned about it since coming out and I just cried, imagining what was lost and how it's possible to just wipe out any data of people existing.

Molly houses were popular in Georgian England but still not an openly accepted thing. Iv really never understood homophobia as a what you would probably call a cis white male Personally I don't like the term I prefer being called a strait white male as cis reminds me of the word sissy but I digress my main point is as a straight man I have no reason to dislike homosexual men as they are not in competition with me when it comes to sexual conquests relationships and the like and I know I maybe stereotyping a bit but Iv had alot of homosexual friends men and women and the men at least were pretty much allways clean cut and smelled nice. I just don't get homophobia and straight men that do have a problem depending on how far they take it makes me think of a line from what I think was written by Shakespeare. It goes something like this.. "The lady duff protest too much". Good video I learnt something new today thanks to this channel. Live long and prosper. Peace out. Great vid! I saw a movie, quite a while ago called "Der Einstein des Sex" that covered some of this- if you can track down a copy, it's worth a watch.

As a French person, I've literally learnt about WWII my whole life. From children books to actual classes, I thought I basically knew everything. And then you come with this story. I'm actually really sad to know that all these researches, all the efforts that were put in helping trans people have been totally wiped out of history because of some oppressive ideology. Aaron I agree with you that not enough on many subject of interest are taught in school........on the note of homosexuals in Germany during WW2 and them being round up I had to learn that myself......mostly the laws and that there are more than just the pink and black triangle

as a trans Jewish guy in a relationship with another trans guy I often think about Hitler's quote that a trans Jewish person was the most dangerous person in Germany ( I would really appreciate it if someone found the quote for me because I remember reading it in wikipedia but I don't remember where) and I am so happy that I live in the tolerant country that I live in that accept all of my identity, I mean there are things that are not user friendly in being trans but everyone I meet now has such better intentions then in most of history towards trans and Jewish people. thank you for this informative video, I will use it as a recourse to my youth groups
