Oscar Robertson used to be regularly in the conversation for greatest player of all-time. As years go by, he barely gets mentioned when people talk about the best players ever. It's ridiculous. In 10 seasons with Cincinnati, he averaged 29.3 ppg, 10.3 Assists and 8.5 rebounds. He won a title as an older (but still good) player with the Bucks playing alongside a young Kareem. He was a great all around player. People seem to judge him based on a few clips of him as an older player shooting a midrange jumper. He was much better than that. He is easily one of the top players of all-time.
That’s because people hate Russell Westbrook so bad, that they take an amazing statistic and make it seem worthless…. Just because he’s the one who holds the record.
Bill Russell and Wilt kind of get shafted here as blocks weren’t officially measured until the 73-74 season when both were out of the league. Either of them getting 10 blocks in a game was not uncommon, so they would easily have way more triple doubles than what they’re officially credited with.
But back then you didn't had the rule, that you can only stand three seconds in the zone. So for example imagine a Rudy Gobert or even Tacko Fall standing the whole under the rim. This is also supported by the fact, that back then the Players literally shot no threes and where just running towards the rim. So please stop comparing different ages with each other an jumping into conclusions.
Luka and Joker are about to permanently rearrange that list....Jokic is already at 124 and Luka is at 69. If he played with a better team all season he would be in the 80s or 90s already. Since the trade at the all-star break he's been putting them up like it's cake. 13 for the season, but 3 in the last week. Amazing what actually putting an adequate team around one of the most gifted players in league history will do....
Interesting how many guys jump into the list and how many more triple double bron gets from 2015 on... nba is trash in today's generation, just a straight stat padding league because new fans are impressed by big numbers rather than good defense
While most of this looks possibly right the idea that some only on list because some items were not recorded in early days of NBA shows the somewhat foolishness of lists . Case in point anyone who watched NBA in 1960's until now knows Russell had more assists than shots he took & avg. over 14 PPG his career & he had numerous Reb. & Blocks & Wilt who had blocks & points & Reb. & if stats were kept in his 1045 games few if any would not have saw a Triple Double for at least 85 or 90% of them . Yea , new things done after they retired to make others relevant in NBA . Yea they are but not best.
If blocks and steals were being tracked back in the 60s, then wilt and Bill would be on the top of this list. Those two averaged nearly 10 blocks a game with the occasional 10 steals. Wilt even has a quintuple double game, as well as his famous single triple game that anyone else has to do
@@Kingkam_77 actually no he didn’t, The average height for the NBA during the time Wilt played is around 6 foot 5.5, And every team had a centre that was at least 6 foot 10 to combat Wilt. It’s a myth that he played short players
People really sleep on how amazing Havlicek was as a player. More triple doubles and rings than most of the guys on posters, screens, etc. hell of a player.
Yeah, but everyone who played in the league when there were 8-15 teams is going to get overlooked. They simply didn't have to face the same level of competition, so their accomplishments are less impressive. Just like how people putting up records today are getting snubbed because of the lack of defense in the league. Different times, different levels of accomplishment.
At some point Oscar seems like he has as many TDs as all other players COMBINED. That's the difference with Westbrook's era. Also if they recorded blocks and steals in his days Wilt would have so much more.
A few years ago, I read an article about students who asked the NBA organization to grant access to the archives in order to count blocks of players like Bill Russell and Chamberlain. Russell reportedly had 8.6 per game and Chamberlain blocked his opponents' throw 28 times in one game. Amazing.
@@erebor4nierdzewny970 I watched a video from JxmyHighroller that if the league counted his 8.6 blocks per game, wilt would have 10,560 blocks (correct me if im wrong).
Seeing Wilt start hunting down the Big O, then getting injured in '69, is pretty amazing. If they'd counted blocks back then, every one of his 78 triple-doubles would be a quadruple-double - except any possible quintuple-doubles, seeing as how they weren't counting steals, neither.
@@letstalk140 it is when you are literally snatching rebounds from your teammates and making a shit ton of dumb passes instead of just scoring. also getting 35 minutes every game sure helps.
@@kirihara147 it's not this is the nba russ is like 6tt3 200 pounds hes not a 7fter. Shit fk going 20 10 is not easy this man westbrook is a different breed
He’s a very selfish player. Westbrook will never win a title because of anything he does. If he’s on a team that wins a title then it will be in spite of him rather than because of him. He’s team cancer.
Westbrook becomes less impressive when look at the flow, everybody taking off with a lot of triple doubles in that era. In big-O’s era, he is the only one doing it; in magic’s era, magic larry bird are the only one doing it...
And Fat Lever (along with magic and bird)! (probably the least elite player to make it high on the list, at least since the 50s - he was a pretty good player but basically he was a point guard who could rebound.)
Yeah russ was the first in the era to do it.. what are you gonna start saying curry’s range isn’t impressive cause other players can shoot that far now too?? Lmao ignorant asf
If blocks were counted towards this stat back when Wilt played, he would lead this list by hundreds of games. Remember this guy blocked, literally, thousands of shots. Over 20 a game was common for him and 10 is pretty close to his average before 1970. So think about how many quadruple doubles he had when you look at his counted triple doubles. Also Russell fits into this category due to his 10+ blocks a game being normal.
Only reason Westbrook and any of these other new school players beating any records is because of the rule changes ! Curry would’ve never beat it back then ! Rules changing for the worse !
Least respectable stat thanks to Russ. He had an entire organization dedicated to make him triple double for years. All his teammates let him get the easy d rebounds, got the ball all the time, made attempts whenever he wants. Kidd's 107 triple doubles way more respectable, so many times I have seen him finishing the game like 9-17-15 stats, he just didn't care. Anyone on this list would have way more triple doubles if they were stat padders like Westbrick.
Pretty sure Russ has more games with 9 rebounds or assists in NBA history. And his teams let him get the rebounds because it helps him push the ball in transition. Hence why his teams are always at the top of the league in pace. He has the 2nd most offensive rebounds in history or a PG behind Kidd in 500 less games. Let that hate go man.
@@NBATheory I heard this argument so many times, apparently only Russ of all PGs figured out that ball transition formula. Not buying it. It's not hate, I just don't like to watch selfish players turning the game into their personal showcase. It's a team sport. He is the only player I know boxing out his teammates, once I even saw he was yelling to Adams in the middle of a game for not letting him to grab the easy rebound (btw how about Adams' stats?). I have seen him sometimes didn't take a single shot and forced unnecessary assits during a whole quarter because he was one assist away from his triple double. Like many said his triple doubles are not organic, it's not the result of a good team play, it's one individual chasing his own glory. That's why when he averaged triple double numbers 4 season in 5 years, his teams didn't even make the playoffs or lost in 1st round at best. Congrats on most inefficient triple doubles in history. There is a reason when you google "stat padder" it looks like you entered Russ's insta page, dude's face is everywhere. Even though he is a talented player he got this title by stat padding and we all know it.
The game has changed...in the next 10-15 years almost all the old school players will be off the list. Players prioritize stats now more than ever before
As of end of 2023-24 season Westbrook has 199, Jokic has 130 and Doncic has 77. Not counting his rookie season Joker has averaged 16.3 triple doubles per season (had 24 and 25 in the two most recent seasons). Assuming he plays to age 35, which is Westbrook's age, and continues the 16.3 pace he would end up with 228. So seems entirely likely that he and/or Doncic will eventually be at the top of this list.
I have great respect for Magic ranking as high as he does with a relatively short career. Also, his 30 playoff triple doubles is most all time (with the usual caveat that Wilt and Russell would likely be much higher if you counted their blocks). Lebron has 28, then it's Jokic's 18 in third place.
When you see Oscar Robertson take the lead back in 1960 and reach a towering 181 Triple - Doubles. You think , no one will ever reach that number ! Enter Russel Westbrook !
I remember when Russ was in Rockets and i forgot who it was but clearly the ball was going to the guy and Russ gives him the dirtiest look because the guy didn't let him get the rebound and the game ended with Russ getting 9 boards. That was so funny 😂
This stat used to be special until Russ came along and showed us how easy they are when you have your entire team making it the top priority to make sure you get one every night.
