Coach Nick gets a game out of the archives and shows you how these two teams went after each other in the first of 6 championships for the Bulls and Michael Jordan in the 90's. The key match up was Michael Jordan guarding Magic Johnson, and it took overtime to decide this epic game.

Awesome Breakdown. I watched this series this past summer and I think the legend of Pippen switching onto Magic is a bit overblown. Jordan still spent a large majority of the games guarding Magic. But as a smart coach does, he used two of the best defensive players in the game to guard one of the top 5 best players ever. Great series to watch, especially if you are a Bulls/Jordan fan.
@RealMrGreenTeaLatte

So, everyone always says Pippen on Magic is the difference in this series, but from this break down, it sounds like it was Cliff Livingston that really helped!

Hey Coach do you think you could do a breakdown of the 2004 NBA finals when the Pistons beat the Lakers and maybe show how the Pistons were able to pull off the upset? Maybe show some of their defensive sets?

Harry Johnson, Pistons weren't professionals. They were playing dirty the whole series. Especially Rodman, Lambier and Isaiah. That's why they aren't talked about too much

My compliments to bballbreakdown. He does an outstanding job of narratting & analyzing. As a livelong Bulls fan, Game 3 of the 1991 NBA Finals vs. the Lakers is my all-time favorite. The Bulls had yet to win a single a NBA Championship, The media hyped the series as: Magic vs Michael. The Lakers were heavy favorites, w Magic having won 5 rings vs. 0 for Micheal. Series tied 1-1. This is game 3 from LA. Bulls trail much of the game, but comeback time & time again, & win it in double overtime!
@timsmith1033
@timsmith1033 10 лет назад
I personally believe if worthy and Scott had been healthy & able to play this would have been a 6-7 game series with LA having a legit chance of winning. Worthy was a matchup problem & would have forced the bulls to keep pippen on him & as great of defender as pip was i dont think he could physically handle big game james on the block and mj on magic. We saw in game 1 what happened if mj had to guard magic the whole game. Also Scott avg 15 pts a game he was LA best shooter, perimeter defender, and a excellent fast break finisher. I'm not saying a healthy LA squad would beat CHI all I'm saying is they would have had a good chance.

timsmith1033, yes I agree. The Lakers matched up very well against them and had the experience advantage. They could have easily won the series if they were totally healthy. But it probably would have gone 6-7 games.
@edkiely2712
@edkiely2712 Год назад
Yes! Worthy played at about 70-75% the first 3 games, and it was still a series! Game 4 is where his ankle finally gave way, and he was removed from the series completely just after the start of the 2nd half! A healthy Worthy, on the top of his game, alone would have made this a 6/7 game series! Byron Scott was atrocious the whole series! Part of it was because he wasn't receiving open looks off of double-teams on Worthy, but he still was pathetic even independent of that. Scott was instrumental in the regular season victory over the Bulls when Magic missed the whole 4th quarter from hitting his head! Also, the Lakers bench was garbage as well! Larry Drew and Terry Teagle gave the Lakers virtually nothing! They both played pretty well in the regular season, but not in this series! Magic played too many minutes because, each time Dunleavy would rest him with Drew, the Lakers would unravel! Credit to the Bulls though! They were hungry, they got after it, and Michael was amazing- as usual!
@bballbreakdown
@bballbreakdown 13 лет назад
@slyester33 He did - and people are trying to rewrite history and say the 90's was a weak time in the NBA. I can't disagree more. And Michael really transcended the position - learning how to make his teammates better by facilitating and only taking over when necessary. Kobe tries to force those amazing moments - Michael let them come to him, and that's why he's got so many iconic Finals moments (shrug, right to left switch, etc.)

Do you think the way the Post Game will ever re-emerge is if the rules get changed again? Have they tilted the advantage so much to the attackers, that the safety of Posting up is not needed, and is in fact too slow to get enough points to win a game?

gj coach. i think this is good because it gives people an idea of how stacked jordan's teams were. i notice that some people pretend like he did it himself. and it also gives people like myself who were to young a chance to see what the nba was like back then. i agree with you about the post position in the 90's. if you didn't have atleast two good post defenders and rebounders you didn't win.

Jordan played excellent defense on Magic in this game, especially OT. With Pippen fouled out, Jordan held Magic to 0-0-0 on 0/2 FG and 2 TOs for the entire Overtime. It's a myth that Magic consistently "lit up" Jordan in the Finals, only due to Pippen guarding Magic primarily in Game 2.

THERE IS NOT A DIFFERENCE! If your team is a certain level based on their skills and once makes the team better, then he is making the play of others better. An example of that is getting double teamed and making the unselfish pass so your teammate has a better look at the basket. It doesn't matter that he only won Championships with the same club, what is important is the PLAYERS. He won 3 rings with a certain supporting cast and the next year without him they lost.

Both championship runs were with different supporting casts. No coincidence they went 2 season without one until Jordan came back and changed his game to make up for a lack of the athleticism he once had. The Bull's also couldn't get their first until Jordan changes his game. The evolution of his game happened and then his teams won rings...this is one of those obvious things I shouldn't have the argue, if you can't grasp this you won't grasp much else basketball wise. goood day son

yea.. that's the problem about youtube. a lot of people pretend to be experts. as far as the say about jordan forcing thing in the early stage of his career, is about as absurd as jordan developed his turnaround fadeaway since the 2nd 3peat. jordan ALWAYS played within the flow of the game, since his college years. i admit that jordan has always been having trouble guarding magic down low, but you also have to remember jordan would crack open any one on one defense

@jeremyDior I'm not sure they could either - although which Laker team are we talking? 1980? or 1988? At the end, I think Cartwright could've guarded Kareem... And Pippen on Worthy would've been great. But Magic most likely would've completely and utterly dominated on the offensive end. But so would Michael. And Bulls could've won the Horace Grant vs. A.C. Green match up...

man,jordan guarded magic the whole series except game 2 where he took 2 or 3 quick fouls,so it doesn't make sense to say if the bulls continued to do that,they would have lost because that is precisely what they did in game 1,3,4,5 except by sequence. of course if you just show all the baskets magic made..but he shot 7/15 and m.j. played his worst game of the series even tough he nearly has a triple double 29/9/9. if i didn't know anything about it,i would have said magic averaged 40 on m.j lol

Coach Nick, would like to get your opinion on this: who was the better defender between Jordan and Pippen? In my opinion, both had trouble guarding Magic in the post but it seemed that Pippen was better at full court pressure. This may be because Pippen had more in the tank since he was specifically focused on that task. Btw, I love these videos: shows how great players like Magic really were.

And I think that because the game was more intense and challenging, everybody, both players and fans, were drawn more into it. It was more than just a game, while today it's just a game. Plus we had legends and great players competing against each other, and they wanted to beat each other down. Today I think mentalities have changed in general, things and people are softer, more politically correct, more sensitive not to hurt the other...so players don't have the competitive nature anymore.

it's because the good players that you talk about,beside pippen, were roles players.now of course if you play around players like jordan or pippen,they have such an I.Q. that they will use the qualities of average players or even bad players(longley,wennington,perdue)to make them look good,that is called I.Q. Basketball. second you have to look the more talented team they faced..the lakers, magic, knicks, cavs,suns,blazers,pacers,heat etc. if you take jordan and pippen out,look at the matchup.
