I remember being an 8 year old boy in Los Angeles.. with a transistor radio hidden under my pillow and turned down low so my parents wouldn't know. Listening to the call of Chick Hearn as they powered their way through a 33 game winning streak. He brought the game to my bedroom at night. Thank you Chick for those wonderful nights...
no one will ever know. but the Laker orginization included the fans back in the day. With Chick, he made us part of the family. He was greater than West and Baylor, Abdul-Jabbar and Magic. More than Kobe and Shaq. Chick was REALLY the Lakers for me. He was always there. His voice was comfort whether in the car or on prime ticket. I will never ever forget Francis "Chick" Hearn. I miss you Chick.
...Chick Hearn raised all of us, attending Oka Elementary School in Huntington Beach, California--and shooting baskets at Mile Square Park in Fountain Valley...between those there was a pizza place nearby where they'd show Lakers games. And it made me feel less alone.
Chick was the face of the Lakers. He called games the way he saw them. If the Lakers were playing bad, he would say so. If the other team was playing well, he would say so. I literally learned the NBA game from Chick. RIP Chick.😊
I remember I’m the early 2000’s we the Lakers came on the NBC for the the game of the day, we would put the broadcast on mute and turn the radio on and listen to Chick while watching NBC.
Los Angeles was blessed with the three greatest sportscasters of all time: Vin Scully of the Dodgers Bob Miller of the Kings and Francis “Chick” Hearn of the Lakers
Wonderful eulogy. West was obviously very affected by Chick's passing. I have to say that when Chick Hearn died, so did my fire for the Lakers. I didn't understand it at the time but I'd listened to him for forty years and he seemed to represent everything about the Lakers. So when he died, so did my passion for the team. Such a bummer.
Chick was the greatest basketball announcer ... ever. Whenever we watched the TV feed from another arena, we wouldn't listen to their announcers. They couldn't keep up with the speed of play, so we turned down the TV volume, watched the picture, and listened to Chick's play-by-play on the radio. And he didn't only do play-by-play for basketball - he could run the gamut of sports from Bowling for Dollars to soccer, football, baseball, and yes, he was even a great boxing announcer. I don't know if tapes exist of his other sports announcing, but if you find them, listen; he doesn't miss a beat - and he gets the terminology right in all sports. You know why? Jerry mentioned it - "Preparation". The man had the ability to focus and exclude everything else from his mind except the topic at hand. He was also a very gracious interviewer. If you want to go into broadcasting, there's your model - Chick Hearn. I miss him every time I watch a game. "Preparation" kids, is key. Jerry West's eulogy is tops. When he mentions his side-kick, Elgin Baylor, he gets as emotional as he does over Chick.
The great ones are great in any era. Chick was great. West was great. They would be great in today's game. There was an announcer doing the Warrior games around the time of the 60's and 70's named Bill King. To me, he and Hearn were the two best and I loved them both. Both are now gone.
Us who lived in southern california didnt know how good we had with chick at the mic..that is unless on a rare occasion we'd hear an NBC broadcast and listen to lesser announcers.I believe Chick to be the best sports broadcaster who ever lived.
bc hes the archetypal superstar/superman and often left out of many discussions, as well as "glory" in the finals and heartbreak that is shared between them and chick
